So, I am considering becoming a smuggler. Thing is, I am not sure what is the best ship for navigating the common rough terrain the crime bases are in while still having great cargo and protection? Trains just sound like a horrible idea, I found the mining ship to be too large a profile to navigate... I'm thinking a good freighter is prob the obvious choice, but I was kind of wondering about either the armored transport or the liberty gunboat, which I find actually handles decently and has the cargo space of the Bullpup Freighter. Thoughts? This'll be useful info even if I don't smuggle, so don't let that stop you!

Ships for running between criminal bases?

My main smuggler/trader Ship is Miner. Smuggler route in trains is rare ( but do happen
)
Join up with other smugglers and hire an escort - thats my advice.Just hail any IOC ship if you want
I'll take it by Miner you mean the PC mining ship, and not the admin's version?
As stated above, I find it too clunky. I can't stand how often I am hitting things... Am I doing something wrong?
-
Yes, he means the " Mining Ship " not the Miner.
Anyway, I don't remember the mining ship be so clunky, at least not more than a train, so, dunno.
-
Bulpup mk3 everytime.
Twin thrusters to get you out of harms way ( up to 300kph with the right thrusters )
400 cargo space.
Lots of guns.
High armor.
Shield is set at a max freighter class7, but you can't have everything.
Agility fairly good for a ship of its size. Also its great for taking to coalition space, outrun those blue meanies.

I like the looks of the Bullpup, but
a) Its BG. Don't know how willing they are to grant permission, esp if I become a smuggler.
b) Why the Bullpup instead of the Liberty Gunboat? Sure, I lose thrusters, but a gunboat means extra durability to make up for it, has the same cargo, handles just fine, and has some mean firepower. At the least, why would a gunboat not work?
And no, the miner is not as bad as a train, but that isn't saying much.

Apophis Freighter all the way, one of the "new" ships, from years ago now...
410 cargo, 135 batts/bots, and speedy enough. Looks cool too.
But if I see ya with anything illegal, you're gonna visit JAIL ! Ah no worries, CFPD's jail includes a torture-less room, with daily food, with no cockroaches in it... we don't like insects inside the buildings on our planet, we got unhearable sonic waves scaring them off. Just like "Pest reject". It's so clean it hurts the pirates, luckly you are not one, right ?
-
I actually never smuggled, but there are some variants.
Saracen - 150 cargo, but it is a serious PvP fighter that stands near the Cayman.
Haidar. However Haidar lies more in the "podder" category.
Agreeing with Mike, I would like Apophis.
If you are going the way to gunboats, then maybe Kusari Destroyer OR Liberty Siege Cruiser.
And DON'T get in the way of my Secondary2 or Secondary3 with BMGs. If you won't mind, of course...
(Even though I actually can get you to the same prison Mike told about, sometimes I am getting watched by my command, and that means you will have to visit a flying hotel of Saladin-class and I won't be able to do anything...) -
Imo is wiser say you want trade .. as smuggle
.. with this you can after been catch try convice police officer that you do not have idea how such cargo appeared in your ship cargohold
-

Translation: A separated-from-everything Coalition prison, where same as in their "civilization", the baddest pirate/murderer rules over others in the prison, where murdering eachother is ok as it just leaves more space for new prisoners, so torture and such stuff are already a daily topic, and done by the prisoners themselves, to eachother. The security is just the floating big metal box, even if you get out, you better be good at flying. Oh, and you better earn your food, cockroaches included.
If you ever get the chance to say that you are already caught by a CFPD Officer and that you are being escorted,

Michael: Add VERY angry wardens that are actually rejected soldiers that were disowned for war crimes (imagine WHAT war crime you would need to commit during Alliance war to get disowned by Coalition) whose job is also their detention, and sporadic oxygen leaks that can easily sent inhabitants of one part of a ship to an afterlife. And that is sometimes the excuse for wardens to fire at prisoners/even each others just for lulz, since they can always just create an oxygen leak to explain things. And also reactor leaks. And pilot compartment is completely separated from prisoners, so chances to get a controls are low. Riot aboard can just lead to pilots just open the airlocks. Definitely NOT a good idea to run BMGs near Coalition Police officers patrol.
Anyway, that's how you make pirates/traitors pay for their crimes, not to make them be glad for what they did.
BTW: headcanon accepted. -
"for the lulz" xD

Well, it sounds like Coalition prisons are such homely, hospitable places.
And then to top it off we have all the time it takes to traverse that sector to enjoy the lovely view of Coalition technology and Dom'Kavash invasions. Yes indeed, I daresay the Altair Sector seems like the perfect place to be caught smuggling...

If Me ... I Used A Mining Ship For Trading ( Before I Join |LC| )
700 Cargo, 6 Mining Weapon ( Already Mounted On The Ship, 1 Mining Laser ( Already Mounted On The Ship ) Also This Weapon Can Kill A Liberty Dreathnought In 1 Shoot, And Very thick Armor, And Sometimes CD ( Cruise Distruptor ) Cant Stop This Ship ---> I Already Test It In Freeport 7, And The Result : Some Of That Nomads CD'S Hit My Ship But Dont Stop the Cruse Engines :), Annd You Only need To Pay Lower Than $10.000 If You Repair Your Ship Even You Have A Very heavy Damage ( The Cost For Rapair The Weapon Is Always $1 ), And You Can Add A Power generator And Armor On ItA Perfect Addition For Earning Money
The Only Weakness Is : Very Heavy, Have Bad Handling ( Very Hard To Turn And Do Some Manuever ), Dont Have Thrusters, 90 % You can Stuck On The Debris / Asteroids Field, Hard To Operate the Weapon ( The Mining Laser ), If You Get Caught By Some NPC's, 75 % You Cant Run From Them Because The Ship Is Very Slow Ans Dont Have Thruster ... But You Still Can Run From Them If You Have A Good Flying Skill
Good Luck On Your Trade

Yes, problematic in any asteroid field, slow turning, bad handling, hard to flee from NPCs if you get caught (even though this is why you must be neutral with all on your trader chars), no thruster (even a train has thrusters... and 4 times more cargo).
And that if you get caught abusing the mining laser to kill capital ships, you can get it banned for exploitingThe part of the laser not making any damage at normal distances is for a reason, not a bug. Luckly players get enough warns and fines first.
The Mining Ship looks nice tho, there should be some trains that also look cool, more than just the Scouser. (cool, well, it at least looks different).
-
Just mine away through the asteroid field?
-
Well, I could only suggest you the APC Freighter and the Mining Ship. Those I've tried and they've worked for me the best.
