Trading versus Smuggling

  • I know EVERYONE is going to have an opinion on this one. Here's how it works [in my mind]:

Trading - diamonds, water, food, little dolls with wobbly heads, noobium...this is trading. It doesn't require anything special and you can do it anywhere.
Smuggling - trading in Black Market Goods [BMG's], station blueprints, deadly toxins, carnivorus bugs. Requires an RP liscence.

Here's where I'm confused: If smuggling requires an RP liscence then smuggling is RP? That's the way I picture it. This means that systems which do not allow RP also do not allow smuggling because smuggling is RP.
Police are required to have a Police Liscence to be able to fine players for illegal activity. Pirates are required to have Pirate Liscence to "tax" other players. Mercs are required to have a Merc Liscence to take contracts and collect bounties.
BUT, many players go around "trading" in BMG's WITHOUT a Smuggler's Liscence.

Many of you will say that smuggling BMG's is only trading and is not RP. If that is so, then why is there a Smuggler RP Liscence? Also, if smuggling IS roleplay, then systems which disallow RP also disallow smuggling, like New York and many clan systems.
So, I guess my question is this: Is smuggling BMG's roleplay or not? Does it require a liscence, yes or no?

There is currently a great many players on the server who think smuggling is only trading and doesn't require anything.

  • This is a valid point Rex and one I hope OP will eventually address by somehow making the BMGs only sellable to ships mounted with a smuggler's license in a future CF release.

Hell, even I've done it before the SA declared it's non-smuggling stance on traded goods last year.

This is unfortunately a very rampant problem with that license, besides as most people will argue, that's what being a smuggler is all about, "flying under the radar" and anyone can buy BMGs.

Sadly until the smuggler license/BMG exclusion is introduced, there's not a whole lot that can be done about it, except maybe reporting said people to a GR to be dealt with for possible RP/server rule violations.

Hopefully OP will chime in his thoughts and ideas on how this will addressed in the future.

  • That's why the smuggler license stays untouchable. I guess the BMGs MUST be for a RP. Only smuggler freelancers/clans can trade it.

PS: And damn , it would be less targets to kill.

  • And you would be right. I went back through the Server Rules and here is a direct quote from the Server Rules page:

    Smugglers Syndicate Licence
By mounting a Smugglers Syndicate Licence your character becomes a smuggler. You are able to buy and sell BMG’s (Black Market Goods) which are both highly profitable and highly illegal. [It is the intension to have BMGs only available to players with a smugglers licence mounted, though this may not be functional in the first release of Crossfire 1.7]

So, OP has declared for a long time now that smuggling REQUIRES an RP liscence to buy and transport BMG's. This means if you smuggle without a liscence, you are breaking Server Rules. Smuggling is also considered RP so if you smuggle in a no-RP zone [New York or non-RP clan systems] then you are breaking rules again.

    That sound about right?

  • yes this problem has been addressed already but we have no solution yet eventhough we are working on it

  • Trading in and of itself generates RP. Or it should, IMHO. Who else are pirates going to tax? People flying killing machines? Anyone in a big assed freighter is gonna be part of RP. Especially if they're hauling goods. Trader isn't an RP type, but they still participate. Just ask TWC! ;)

  • Having to display a smugglers licence presents another problem. Only one licence is allowed, clans must display their rp licence so clans will not be able to smuggle unless they are a smuggler clan. Which leaves only freelancers who would be able to smuggle.

  • And I thought exactly that is the whole idea of having a RP server, choose a RP and act according to it.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • @ Titus: sure they would disagree, cuz they make their money with smuggling and it´s easy.

@ SHS: No, you´re not. There is at least one other person out there with the guts to actually wear the smuggler licence while smuggling.

  • heh ... but if only Smugler will be allowed to "smugle" BMGs then it solve (very nice solution) problem where have "good" guys take money. All current parties will have the same problem :bohsw:

  • The rule is deadly simple : to buy BMGs you gotta have a Smuggler license.

If your clan is not of the Smuggler type, you cannot mount it and need to find other ways of earning money.

Smuggling is one of the 4 RP and never has it been permitted to play 2 RPs at the same time. If you want to smuggler so much, why not create a mafia/gangster-style clan ? otherwise, stick to your own RP.

  • Yes, it's for the best..

Police Clans: Not Allowed to trade BMG
Pirate Clans: Not Allowed to trade BMG
Mercenary Clans: Not Allowed to trade BMG
Freelancers: Not Allowed to trade BMG
    Smuggler Clans: ALLOWED

And I guess we should also forbidd the freelancers to do any RP. Because they can switch to every RP(Police, merc , pirate , smuggler) at any time and it's just stupid. Plus, the smuggler is one of them, and only smuggler clans are allowed to trade BMG. If the freelancers want RP, then they should join a clan. That would also help the clans in CF to grow and have a lot of fun.

  • Hummm, I disagree Crysis.

Not being in a clan does not necessarily mean you are a (RPless) freelancer...
There are players out there that have mounted licenses and play their RP without being in a clan...
That is true they are able to eventually switch license, but that's their freedom.

It would be a big loss I think to reserve RP only to clans (this is a RP server after all, no?)

Personally, as long as having the correct licence mounted when going for a specific action (fine,
tax, bounty hunting, smuggling) then it is fine with me...

  • So all this to say that only smuggler can trade BMG. So i come online and i trade BMg and people will take screenies and send them to Op saying. Look a merc is trading BMG. And then What ?

Now lets think a litle. in 1.9 it will be introduced new ways to make money, like mining, fixing cargo of trains etc etc.
So i am asking the "legal guys" mining in a train is legal? well u also trade more than 500 items of a single commodie....
its like if a apc load a train full of BMG. is it legal?

so the most important here is killing pods since u can make 20 mil/hour kiling csf and sell pods in prisons. all the rest is forbiden. Excecpt if u want trade light arms or diamonds with an apc.

So until 1.9 fix all of this, and there are other possibilities to make money why keep discussing this thing over and over?
