• hmmm you know Rey, out of all the logical comments everyone (including you) gave. There is just one Most logical factor that everyone forgot. Planets move, asteroids move, galaxy's move, universe's move. And they all move in circles.

If ship "A" were to jump from point "Y" to point "X" then there is a logical factor that must take place. Which is the time it takes to travel.

Logical conclusions of the theory of jump gates are that the ship going through a jump gate would travel at the speed of light which in theory is still too slow given the fact the the universe is a really massive (if not HUGE) place. At the current state, the speed of light is the fastest way of travel known to man which is also yet to be proven by man as we dont have that kind of technology. Everything is still theoretical and I dont think we will ever have the means to create that technology to prove the theory correct.

Anyways back on topic. What I am trying to say is that it doesnt matter where the gates should be placed in a system, what REALLY should matter is where the gates are pointing and an accurate calculation of data must be present.

Example: If I was to shoot myself with a rocket from the moon to mars, I would be thrown in a vector course towards mars with nothing but momentum. In that case I would have to point where mars would be in the time it would take me to get there which would be say....a course of 8 months (roughly calculated) and then also point where mars would be in 8 months which is where I would have to point my rocket before luanch in order to be EXACTLY on target.

Likewise the jumpgates have a similar function and since they calculate in the speed of light, the numbers would be too much for us to even comprehend. As long as your pointed the right way, it doesn't matter where you are as long as its the right way and also (one more thing everyone forgets) as long as you are not facing towards a solid object otherwise you will die.

Thus I conclude this debate kinda pointless and also shows the reason as too why everything seems out of place in OP's maps :P

Right time for me to go to work.

  • you can put the background in any colour you like just by going to options and changing the background colours. I usualy use the 253 grey.

you should also assign weights to the lines on the plot file.

when you plot it, just choose plot to file .jpg or .png image in the plt window and choose the resulotion you want it with

  • All planets, asteroids and everything, does Not move in circles ^^

While a planet spins itself, it moves arround the sun, that moves arround a bigger sun or black hole, meanwhile they all are getting distance btw them for the 'explosion' effect... all planets and suns are getting distance by the center of the galaxy, while they spin arround some other astres... it can get too messy ^^

The moons of the planets can be cool if they spin arround the planet. That's enough ^^ makeing the entire planet spin... would make the tradelanes in normal systems crap, in Sol system you should run(counting the dimension of the system...) over 1000 speed to catch the planet and the gate... or simply wait one hour (or more) until it gets back to where you was, even you'd have to catch it again xD

  • Exiler, remember that jump gates are based wormholes.
and a wormhole is theoretically a way for faster-than-light travel.(this is for your knowledge)
and a wormhole is a basically a blackhole fused with a white hole(thought it has not been proved that white... exist) and at this point all the laws break including the thing u said about moving to mars.
theoretically, when u enter a worm hole, u have no connection which what happens outside. so there is no need for the jump gate to be pointing toward the other system and u dont collide with solid objs either since u dont exist in that place anymore.

    @Micheal
please remember that when u enter into a system, u start orbiting the star with the same orbital velocity as the other objects
therefore planets dont move from their current position relative to u.

    meh.

    WRONG !
If anything you start with the orbital velocity of the object, that brought you there - the Jumpgate or the jumphole.

Every object has its own, destinctiv orbital velocity around the next, bigger gravitational source, and with this source around the NEXT bigger gravitational source and so on.

But if you refer only to the sun of a system, then ALSO has every object its own spinning speed around it.

That why you have the changing positions of the planet on the nightsky, dinosaurs killing asteroidcrashes and why Gallileo would have almost been fried by the inquisition, the older days.( It's called orbital mechanics. )

Oooooo... Me likes. :D I might have to change up to use icons instead of pushpin looking markers. In fact, I think I will do that. 8)

I've got the files ready in JPEG format and in PDF format guys, however there is a catch unfortunately... I can show you the maps in jpeg format, but due to Adobe's screwballed exporter they look very pixellated. The PDF format will be the best to print from it seems.

Soon as Admiral Sam-Thomas gives me the go ahead, I'll post them here.

  • Now thats what i am talking about :P - People posting cool new map Ideas instead of debating real life in a "GAME" :P hehe, just saying we should make another thread for the debating topic in this thread :).

BTW might I state that its just a game - doesnt really matter to me where what is since I will never be in space myself, probably gona be dead by then. As long as this game is fun enough for me then I am cool with what ever idea's get popped in. And that is one thing OP still gets right with freelancer. Thank you again for the hard work OP! 8) (wish I knew more about modding and programming, then id actually do more than just posting thanks everytime.....)

  • OP, are you interested in moons spinning arround the planet ? Like Earth's moon spinning instead of staying there, but moving slowly, sure :D

Also, it could be used just for some moons instead of all, so the plans don't change of some planets like... Earth's spacejunk.

  • Alright guys, I'm about pretty much done with all the changes I have in mind for these maps I'm working on... However, the "Silver Arrows Command" (or SAC as we like to call it :D ) is currently reviewing these for a pending and offical "Silver Arrows" press release. Once that happens, I'll post some screenshots of the maps and the offical release of them in PDF format, as I'm told, this will be an offical "Silver Arrows document" as well.(offical SWAT document as well if OP is cool with it)

As for some of you concerned about the PDF format and why I'm doing the maps in that format, here are my reasons... The vector based graphics I've done in AutoCAD with these maps is very detailed and very sharp, any conversion to raster unfortunately looses this detail,(even when I exported to a 1200x1600 .PNG!) as some of the features on the map are rather small and will get garbled in the translation. Adobe Acrobat's PDF Writer for AutoCAD on the other hand, has solved this issue due to it's vector based graphics format and is a standard document format the world over. Also, the Adobe Reader is also always free and found all around the internet for a download.

I'm also debating releasing the AutoCAD file for anyone who has access to it as well, the maps print out nicely from AutoCAD too.

  • what about Hyperspace? it's missing from thew map

I do want to thank you for your map you provided earlier though Micheal, it was a great secondary source of info to verify some paths and places. [thumb]

I'd still like to get your help and anyone else who would like to contribute to redo the Altair and Inner Core Sectors general systems arrangement to a more logical one where they are laid out respective to the gates in each system are located, as you had discussed earlier in this post.

  • To put the directions to the other system as how the gates are placed as direction from the system center is imposible. The systems aren't made to make that possible.

Ex: in Pyrddra, the gate to Celldra is on East. and in Celldra the gate to Pyrddra is on North-East. Both are on the right side... how you make the direction of both system to go right, but to met the other systm ? ^^ Unless you spinn the system's coords, but then the other gates in that syste won't fit.
Diablo just said that thing vs my map to find sth wrong ^^ but it's impossible to do, so don't worry about directions to be respective to the gates in each system's locations, make your own ones, or make it grid style :D

For how good your maps will be, they still have no system maps included in some... interactive way ^^ hehe
But that efficiency is not to be made for public.
