Game still won't play after Clean Re-Install (15 times?) after playing for a week.

  • I have been playing Crossfire 1.82 SinglePlayer for the past week (and have in the past as well). I have really enjoyed playing it, However:. .. i have had to reinstall it 2 times during the week, but was able to keep playing UNTIL yesterday. Now, after trying to re-install it 15(?) times, it still crashes at main menu. I have gone through the forums to no avail, it still will not play!

Here is what I have done:
    uninstall Crossfire 1.82
    uninstall FLMM
Uninstall Freelancer (including saved folders/etc in the uninstall menu)
    rebooted, etc.
    Registry cleaners
file folder removals from Windows system AND saved game folders, etc.
the install page says to install Crossfire 1.82 first? then Freelancer? that doesn't make much sense.

I have done these repeated steps several times over. The last install, even rebooted between each: Install Freelancer, reboot: Install FLMM, reboot: Install Crossfire, reboot: Activate Crossfire, reboot: Start game through FLMM, same crash issue.

Every time i have started the game, i have waited for the update/download to complete before trying to play Singleplayer. I have even tried clean installs using XP compatibility (I am using Windows 7 64bit with a ATI 5850 video card)

The only thing that changed yesterday, was that I became a member or registered to this site to gain access to the forums for help with finding things, etc.

I do not know what has happened, but now have spent as much time keeping this mod running, or just trying to get it to run than I have played.

I have even tried starting the game with my internet modem shut off, as suggested in forums.

Anyone have any ideas before i completely walk away from this mod?
Also, what gives with the 1.92 version? I see in forums where it is available and released, but cannot find it anywhere. I have read limited beta in past, but today read is now available...

my frustrations mount, and about to give up.

  • turn of i-net to prevent that the launcher patches

  • Please READ CAREFULLY...

    IF YOU PLAY 1.82......

DO NOT let Freelancer update itself from the internet ....

The internet update is for 1.9 and NOT 1.82 ...

IF you update on the internet, the game WILL NOT start and run correctly.

  • I am giving up and throwing in the towel. I cannot believe that i have to turn my computer modem off in order to play version 1.82, that was playable until yesterdays oversight.

What about other people on the same modem I am on? They can't use the internet, while i play. It takes 5-10 minutes to reboot the modem and then the computer when i disconnect it like
this and find it hard to believe with all the intelligence behind this mod, that no one has been smart enough to figure this out.

I have tried to figure out how to block Crossfire from accessing the internet on my computer, but despite my efforts of blocking the freelancer game and the server in my firewall (there were like 8 files listed), it still connects through a file somewhere i cannot find, and when i start the game it breaks again and i have to start all over. Argh, what a waste of my time and anyone elses!

Now, if only the Developers had figured this out in the first place, and written into the code that the Server checks the Version # before FORCING an update that
is clearly causing alot of people a lot of hours of hassles of trying to figure out how to deal with the issue. Can't help but sit here and think What IF, they had thought that since it was breaking already over complicated and finicky installs, that they should stop breaking the installs by writing in a quick code to prevent it from automatically trying to update to version 1.9 in the first place.

Fantastic MOD, and I would give all the thumbs up in the world here, but i cannot due to the fact that I can no longer play it without playing Mickey Mouse games
with turning off my computer modem. I have spent more than 8 hours! Trying to get around this issue, and I am upset with jacking around all day today and chunk of yesterday over a simple problem you should have already addressed.

I understand you need to work out the bugs for the new 1.9 version you are coming out with. But I would suggest in the future, release it to only specific people and keep the FORCED UPDATES that
crash the only playable version by everyone, set aside as a download for the testers or whatever you have to do to prevent this issue in the future.

thanks for the help, but no thanks...

  • Thanks for your detailed message ...

My personal feeling on this issue .....

In HINDSIGHT there is 20/20 vision ....

If you are a software developer, you will also know what I am talking about and you WOULD NOT EVEN RAISE THIS TOPIC, as it is understood that this is one of those issues that 'should have been foreseen', but nobody thought of it 2+ years ago as the issue has not occured before ....

Trust me .. the developers of this excellent mod has already made sure that they will address this issue ... but honestly ...

WOULD YOU HAVE THOUGHT TO WRITE THIS INTO THE 1.82 MOD UPDATE CHECKER ?? at that is the only place that the downloading of the 1.9 files can be blocked .. in the 1.82 update checker ....

    Secondly .....

You obviously don't know your computer and how to block processes to access the internet, quite as well as we thought (or you thought) if it still updates ... Others are blocking it effectively and still playing 1.82 with the intructions as posted on the forum ...

Have you thought of DISCONNECTING your computer from the network (pulling out the lan cable) before starting crossfire ?? That way you don't have to switch off the modem .. and much simpler I think....

    Kind Regards

  • I am sorry. I of course will upload the 1.82 patches again and stop the development of CF1.9 so you can play.
Sorry guys... you heard that guy... he wants to play and we have to stop our work.

Why in gods name would we have build in version checks? For a version that is actually not supported anymore?

Next to that... turning off the modem?... playing around with the firewall?
why dont you simply deactivate your PCs network?

  • Go visit a basic computer training - probable one for older aged people. And learn how to turn off you inet connection without rebooting your damn modem. My god - do we have to care about everyone's PC knowledge?? 8 hours to try to figure out a way around this problem. Not bad. I would make it in lets say within a minute to start the game without Internet access.

But you are one of the kind of people that want to be controlled by PCs and not the other way round that you might control your PC?

  • It is interesting that he says about "stopping files" and not the entire game... I wonder what way he used, no antivirus at all ?

  • I too had the op problem, What I don't get is
The only version for us to DL is 1.82
No instructions about playing off internet till I read it here

If 1.9 is the version we should be on then why not let us DL?

  • Hello DRPF,

1.9 is tested now and this was reason for stop download. You will need atm little more patience.
