Approved Mods for Crossfire 1.82?

  • Hi :)
I just started playing FL again, especially after seeing all the great mods out now! I was just wondering, are there any approved mods that can be used with 1.82? I have only just started playing Crossfire today, and I think it's great so far, but was wondering if there were any mods out there that i could use with 1.82 if I thought I might want to try one. I've only played SP so far and will probably get to MP very soon. And yes I would absolutely make sure any other mods, which would be considered "cheats" I guess, would be deactivated before playing MP. ;) Thx to any and all for any feedback!!! :D

    It is what it is........

  • As far as I know, the only mod that will work with CF without breaking your install is the speed mod. If you know anything about how FLMM works and the inis of the game, you might be able to manually mod something, but I'm pretty sure that would piss OP off. I would recommend staying away from messing with mods with Crossfire.

  • Thx for the info. :) And yeh you're absolutely right about the messing around with the mod thing....true words of wisdom I think. :) It was all just a thought that I kept bouncing around in my head so i thought to find out. I really apreesh the feedback, thx!!!!!! :D

  • Quote from Serverrules

Using modifications on the server causes severe performance degradation, sometimes causing it to crash. As a result we have a zero tolerance policy on all modification usage. Please ensure you have no mods running when you attempt to connect to the server. The only Mod permitted on our servers is Crossfire 1.82.

  • next to that: Crossfire is too complex to be compatible with other mods
they all would overwrite important parts of the game and in the end damage the mod (from the modders point of view)

  • *Sorry, old thread*

I use Masternerdguy's Widescreen Wondermod [generic version] which is available at moddb. It gives the "not compatible" message in FLMM but it does install after Crossfire just fine and it works. If you have a uber video card and big monitor, it might also work for you. What does it do? It lets you play at 1680x1050 resolution and all the fonts are properly sized and all hud sections are in the right places. All the modifications to the [Fonts] section are done for you as well as placement of the HUD's. I've been using it for a few weeks and have no problems. Here's a screenie....

  • Just sayin its against the rules. Now I am a bad guy, am i not? :=)

Sorry for the off-topic, but your avatar is way too cute to call you bad, Huor =))

  • Hmmm ... maybe OP can check if is OK using this mod? PPL with new big monitors might enjoy CF better if is this working without affecting ship movement.

  • i hardly can prevent it

  • By that screenshot it seems that you don't have a wider view than in a normal situation, as I can notice the station, and a bit on the planet, that the whole image is like, stretched to be wider, but you see the same things/distance as a normal screen setup.

So I guess it isn't something unfair.

  • As far as I know the game has to be played with the available settings provided by the game itself.
If there is no supportive setting for "newer" screens, wait until its implemented (if its going to be done), so everyone has the same "default" options available without having to install/enable something additional.

I personally use a widescreen monitor and I did not need to change any setup. My screen automaticly adjusted the display setting of the game without my doing. So I have full screen without any bars on the side or displaced pictures. In fact, messing with the screen settings in the game does mess up my picture :) So I rather stay with the default settings than getting screwed afterwards.

  • It is all right with this screenshot, the objects' shapes are not stretched. Maybe it seems so a bit because Freelancer's engine itself changes the image to make the picture "deeper", stretching everything from the middle to the edges of the screen, so a planet would look perfectly round-shaped only when it is in the center of your screen. This is especially noticeable in widescreen mode.

Crossfire has a native wide screen support, so everyone can play in full HD (1920x1080 in availble in the game's options), there's nothing unfair here.

@Rex Nebular: you don't need any mods to play with a resolution different from 1920x1080. Just set it once to this value, than exit and open PerfOptions.ini in "My Documents\My Games\Freelancer" folder. The last four lines will be:

    Source

Change the numbers here for the ones you need. I just checked it with 1680x1050 and everything worked fine.
This way they won't accuse you of cheating I suppose. :)

  • ... which does not mean that people have to live with black stripes just because their resolution is not 1920x1080.

  • Well, there are about a half dozen other threads that explain the long drawn out process of manually editing the .ini files to achieve widescreen gameplay in Crossfire. Here's one:

    Manually configuring Crossfire for widescreen...

As you can see, OP himself, thanked the poster for the tutorial. Therefore, it's ok to go in and manually edit my ini files for widescreen mode but it's not ok for me to use a program that does it for me? ?( The widescreen mod does the very same thing....except a whole lot easier and faster. And yes, it DOES NOT change the FOV so it looks much like any other screen that you guys use. It makes no changes to my ships, or my speed, or my accuracy. I bet there are quite a few players here who have used the manual method to get Crossfire to play in wide screen and you can tell because they are the players who post screen shots of the game and their HUD's are not in the proper places. Like this:

    Not quite perfect widescreen

So, if it IS against the rules to use a cosmetic mod that gives absolutely no advantage over other players, let me back up my ini files, wipe and reinstall Crossfire, then copy the ini files back in. Then I won't be running the widescreen mod but I'll have all the results of using the widescreen mod [just like those who spend several hours changing and testing their ini edits].

Addendum: I completely understand that the widescreen mod is a mod. I completely understand that the rules state that we cannot use other mods with Crossfire. However, there are rules and then there is "the spirit of the rules". I have interpreted the rule as meaning that we cannot use mods that give an unfair adavantage over other players. For example, speed mod, accuraccy mod, invincibilty mod, etc etc. This mod is a purely COSMETIC mod that changes nothing except the output to my screen. The only benefit I am getting is that now, I'm using the full capabilities of a 1GB video card on a 23 inch widescreen monitor.
