Dunno, why some linguists count english as a "germanic" language,
they're just too lazy to count as such

the grade of a civilization is definied by the amount of words they use (thats btw. true)
the more complex and evolved a civ is the bigger is the amount of words they have to use for communication

face it... when aliens land on earth germans should talk with them first.

This will be against the rule of Hollywood from planet with population on all territory, aliens to land in USA and talk to english
i'm not familiar with german language, but i know few languages who are more difficult from english with lot complex words
from civilization who fly through space will be logical to talk with creatures with complex communication
english is simple language for that is most popular and for all adventurers from British empire in past traveling over world (North America, Australia for example)
