  • It may not a new idea for many of us, but it includes nice graphics and.... spaceships.

There are a lot of sci fi related videos on the right, so it's up to you to choose which of them is worth watching for you ^^

This would just position you in middle of those videos, more or less.

    Enjoy !

  • Nice video, especially in the middle-end. Sad it is only 480p. :( But thank you anyway!

  • very unlikely to happen as no engine could create as much power

  • Ion engines can. They are very efficient but give a very small propulsion, and working long enough in zero gravity they can accelerate a spacecraft to a speed unreachable by any other means. In perspective there will be ion thrusters with nuclear reactors.

Wikipedia article (I doubt you have time to read it, just have a look at the years when it was invented and built)

  • Propellant: Xenon

    Xenon thrusters ftw :D

hmm, the Argon propellant VASIMR engine is incredibly much more powerful than original version (like 10 times) and much more thrust range ( 500 times).

  • they can not
their energy output is too low for that
it would take ages to reach that speed... and that means they need to load more "fuel"... which in the end means that the mass of the ship raising which means that you need even more power
mass consumes an overproportional amount of energy in relation to speed

so no matter how you call the baby.... chemical rocket, ion engine, nuclear engine, fission engine, orion engine or even antimatter engines with gamma ray propulsion... you will not get over 20% of the lightspeed

getting higher speeds would mean to manipulate the laws of physic

  • Then we need a warp drive...

Well a ship could have a small initial load of fuel if we found a way to refill it with the matter from the surrounding space. Or maybe it could use the energy of starlight.
This or that or any other way, humans will travel between stars one day, this I know for sure.

  • warp drives are actually possible
and light speed would not necessarily be the limit
we just need to manage to control a black hole

  • You mean, worm hole.

Black holes are no hole at all, but a super massive body that traps even light and time. They can only teleport us to the other life/world, that, if our soul don't get trapped O.o Yaykes I don't want to get near to any of those.

And, don't underestimate the power of the antimatter engines... actually some form of energy are those we need to create wormholes, and if antimatter can't, nothing will.

  • Voyager 1 is currently on its way for more than 20 years and it currently has a speed of approx. 17 km a second. A travel to gliese would take us 350 T years. Who is voting for a ticket?
I assume if we want to travel fast then we have to do it the way voyager increased its speed. Using the adduction of masses (like planets or eventually even stars).

We still have some time left - in approx. 2 billion years the Andromeda is crashing into milky way - until then we should be on the way^^

  • nope i meant blackholes actually as they are the only known force in the universe that can weld space such massive way to create the conditions for warp travel (its a theoretical solution as it never was observed that wormholes actually did something like that naturally nor would we ever be able to control that)

and i am not talking about these giant things... wormholes can in theory exist even in very small forms

  • The speed of light can not be reached becouse of near infinite energy spending, afaik.
But may be there will some technology to jump through that border to the superluminal speed

Anyway, we will not see it in our life :(

  • Apparently we have such "portals" even on our planet :P
2 of them and the Bermudas triangle as 3rd hehe

"portals"... heh... I want to see at least one such...
