BioWare responds to Mass Effect ending complaints as protest continues to grow

The growing throngs of Mass Effect fans that have taken to the internet to demand changes to the game's ending have drawn a response from Bioware executive producer Casey Hudson, who says "insights and constructive feedback" from fans will help shape new content for the game going forward.

(Warning: the remainder of this article contains spoilers about both the shape and the specifics of the ending to Mass Effect 3)

Writing on the official Bioware forums, Hudson said the series' overall story arc was always meant to "lead to a bittersweet ending" that captured the "underlying theme of sacrifice" and "the agonizing decisions [Commander] Shepard had to make along the way." But he added that the game also includes the option for "an inspiring and uplifting ending" in which Shepard finds a kind of victory in the "hopeless struggle for basic survival."

Still, Hudson said he respects the views of the thousands of players who have expressed dissatisfaction with the way the series ended:

But we also recognize that some of our most passionate fans needed more closure, more answers, and more time to say goodbye to their stories—and these comments are equally valid. Player feedback such as this has always been an essential ingredient in the development of the series.

Giving a concrete sense of closure wasn't really a central goal for the ending to Mass Effect 3, though. In an an interview with Digital Trends early last week, Hudson said he was looking for a memorable ending that would generate "the sort of polarizing reaction that the ends have had with people—debating what the endings mean and what's going to happen next, and what situation are the characters left in."

And the precise details of that ending were apparently up in the air right through to the end of the game's development. In "The Final Days of Mass Effect 3" iPad app, journalist Geoff Keighley discusses how Hudson and writer Mac Walters were debating the final bits of end game dialogue "right up until the end of 2011," even delaying Martin Sheen's Illusive Man voice recording session from August to mid-November to give more writing time. A story planning document shown in the app points towards an ending that would include "lots of speculation for everyone," while still respecting the importance of the player's choices and feelings.

Regardless of the original intentions for the ending, Hudson assured fans on the forums that the team will "keep listening" as they design new downloadable content for the game, "because your insights and constructive feedback will help determine what that content should be. This is not the last you'll hear of Commander Shepard."

BioWare followed up with a post on the Mass Effect Facebook page today, saying that the developer is "actively and seriously taking all player feedback into consideration" and has "not made a decision regarding requests to change the ending."
    The protests continue

    Retake ME3

The new statements seem to have given Bioware a little breathing room with online protesters. The "Retake Mass Effect 3" Facebook group, which now boasts over 40,000 likes and nearly 4,500 Twitter followers, recently posted that it was "giv[ing] Bioware a little more time to respond to us directly. ME3 has been out for less than two weeks, we need to give them time to realize we aren't going away."

That doesn't mean they're sitting on their hands in the meantime, though. The group finished a letter-writing campaign over the weekend, has added pages in Spanish and Russian to help get the word out internationally, and is "working on ideas to support the movement at [April's] PAX East [convention]," according to Facebook postings. The group is even putting its money where its mouth is, raising over $67,000 in donations for Penny Arcade's Child's Play charity to "bring positive attention" to their efforts. "We would like to dispel the perception that we are angry or entitled," the fundraising appeal explains. "We simply wish to express our hope that there could be a different direction for a series we have all grown to love."

But that hasn't been enough for some angry fans. One Bioware forum member recently wrote about filing complaints against publisher Electronic Arts with the FTC and the Better Business Bureau, claiming that prerelease developer interview statements regarding the ending constitute a form of "false advertising." It's a pretty shaky argument, given the vague and subjective nature of most if not all of those quotes, but it's a bold move that shows just how committed some gamers are to complaining about the game's ending.

The backlash against the ending is even getting big enough to generate a backlash of its own: A newly formed "Keep Mass Effect!" Facebook group popped up over the weekend "to show Bioware that these petitioners and lawsuit harbingers are, in fact, a minority to all those who love the Mass Effect series and how it ended." The group is off to a bit of a slow start, though, with only 27 members as of this writing.

  • 50pack, everyone complain that in the previous Mass Effect, and even this one, they were saying "every decision Shepard makes is very important" and also that "it can decide the future of the galaxy". Where in the end, those people say that all the decisions you take and trying to replay the game 10 times to save everyone/most people from your team was totally useless, as your team dies anyway (except 3 survivors), and in the end you have the same 3 options by a kid.

But I quite disagree with them, depending on what you did in the past you have 2 options instead of 3, you can't chose whatever you want, and if you did wrong in the past you don't even have the good ending, where Shepard survive and Earth is not totally destroyed, as you noticed there are 3 different endings when chosign the option of "destroy the reapers". One which blasts the Earth and everything in the galaxy (worst), one that blasts reapers and damages buildings, but there are human survivors, and the best one where no human or building gets destroyed, Earth survives and Shepard as well(but the reapers get destroyed).

There are 5 endings, and what you have done in past do affect the ending a bit. Maybe just, not enough... as waking up with the team you chosen to come with you is dead... and that thsi cna't be changed, is not good.

  • ok, we know 3 endings

you keep say their are 5 endings...even Bioware says there's only 3...would you mind expanding on the other two Michael?

the initial article is a good find. now maybe fanboi's like myself will stop whining (except i'm not whining however...)

as far as i know, the 3 you have is the 3 you get

    but one thing is sure
having played this game one time to the end give me absolutly no reason to play it again
(there are no other ways to discovery.... nothing that would change the end)

  • There're supposed to be 5 endings, I hope they didn't count who exits infrom the Normandy after the ending lol that is no variation to the Ending.

3 options, and depending on your EMS points, 5 total options, including one where Spehard don't die ^^ And that same ending, Earth is not wiped out/destroyed, humans stay alive as well.

  • its not about the 3 choices
its about all the stuff around... the entire trilogy was about making decisions (which in the end play no role anymore)... it was driven by the characters (which play no role anymore)... it was about building up something (which plays no role)... it was about "challenging" fights (which did not happen at all in ME3)

In ME3 the entire storyline gets completely destroyed turns and twists which do not fit together
Since ME2 they talk about the big fat leading reaper and then suddenly... no word about him anymore.
instead a small child is the bad guy which suddenly turns good and within seconds presents an alternative that was not possible in the millions of years before.
Not to mention that this whole point of the story is not logicial at all. This kid could have opened the citadel mass relay instead of waiting that the sovereign would do that in ME1.
The ending of ME3 destroys every logic behind hind the previous games and clearly has destroyed the best game trilogy of this decade.

  • If Valve would screw Ep 3 (or Half-Life 3) up I will guarantee you that this will be the end of the world.

Noooooo, don't you dare to say that again! :D It hit me like a heart attack :D

  • By the preview of that game (half life 3) it doesn't look special, just another action based game, like ME3, but without chat options.

  • are you fucking trolling me?

First of all there is no preview of Half Life 2 Ep 3 or Half-Life 3

Secondly Half-Life 3 (or Ep3) is arguably the most anticipated PC game ever (stupid Sims don't count) so if Valve would screw it up I can guarantee you that THE INTERNET WILL BE FUCKING MAD and on a scale 100 times bigger than with ME3

But we are talking about Valve here, maker of the best game ever and run by Gabe Newell aka. Gaben the biggest legend in the gaming industry (also in physical size ~~). So screwing up their Half-Life franchise like scrub BioWare is very unlikely.

even though it's not changing the ending entirely, it's giving closure...

sadly, fanboi's may still be mad about it. Bioware states they aren't going to change the ending...hopefully this will shut the fanboi's up for a while...

Will there be more Mass Effect 3 DLC?

More content is being planned and we will release information at a later date.

I guess that cinematic was the only thing they could do in just nearly a month, or so. A free release.

  • It was claimed to have 16 different endings, but not matter how you did play it you felt like a renegade in any possible way, and no, i never heard of and end where Shepard survives, i know about:

-He chooses to destroy Reapers, and dies in explosion, all buildings are damaged and ppl survives, ofc the entire fleet in space it's destroyed along with reapers. and this end i know it's changed a bit at least 2 more times, things like buildings destroyed or not, ppl wiped out or not and so on

    - the second was the one choosing to control them in which he get indoctrinated and ofc somehow he's the "trigger" to explosion in which the main idea from what i understood was him to become and artificial life form having he's mind and thoughts still intact and still have free will in deciding what to do with reapers, ofc all mass relays destroyed and same gay ending with normandy at some shit ass planet all smiley and gay as if they acomplished something, Tali if you'd have choosed to let Geth upload the reapers code, kills herself, in that case Legion and Tali dies both...

-i only heard about the third one, but ppl explained clear never survives in any ending, but it's the possibility to synthetics with organics, which favors only fucking Joker with EDI

Anyway which of this 3 endings either has a different explosion colour or a main concept is the Citadel get's destroyed, well in 1 or 2 so called average endings the citadel is not destroyed. Still fuck them for ruining a good "movie" i'd rather go back to gothic series, but even Gothic 4 was a big piece of crap with nothing hardcore in it and no freewill, yeah 15-16 endings my ass, different explosion textures, plus that pissed me off more, i fucked Liara in all 3 series to see her with Joker at the end, hoping for sure might be a bug since Liara should be death from the moment my final team was Liara-EDI, GRRRRRRRRRR!
