  • Hello everybody,
I know many thread has been written on this topic, but....
I played FL long time ago, and I just finish the main story for the third time, I would try crossfire mod, but unfortunately I can't install it

I already tried dozen of time EXACTLY the installation instruction on the FAQ of this website.
And I have been on internet reading hundreds of post of this problem, still doesn't work.

1/Delete every thing start by unistall.exe on crossfire folder then modloader 1.3.1 then FL (including all folders in c:\...good bye my saved games)
2/Make sure I really deleted every thing (doing research files)
3/Use Ccleaner to delete file and clean up registry
    4/restart computer
5/Disable Aero look in windows 7 (now it look like windows 95)
6/Follow step by step the FAQ:
"How I install/reinstall this mod? Installation instructions:
    1. Deactivate all mods in FLMM
    2. Uninstall (Freelancer Mod Manager)
    3. Uninstall Freelancer, delete ALL ! save game data and screenshots from game folders. Is advised use system search for "Freelancer" (Freelancer use for save folders on system disk) - If you don't do this, you can not play the game.
3b. (advised) Use some registry cleaner as is for example ccleaner and clean registry.
    4. Download and Install FLMM 1.31 (Don't use FLMM 1.4 that is Incompatible !!!)
    5. Download from portal "Download database" FRESH COPY ! of the latest Crossfire Mod (here).
    6. Run the Crossfire Installation (Install it into your FLMM mod Folder)
    7. Install Freelancer
    8. Activate Crossfire in FLMM (Be patient and don't touch anything while Activating in progress ... It is huge mod and Activation need some time !!!)
    9. Launch Freelancer (Crossfire Launcher shows up)
    10. Let the launcher do the downloads
    11. Press either "LAUNCH Crossfire singleplayer" or "LAUNCH Crossfire Multiplayer and deactivate 3D sound ingame options - Audio.
    12. Go online and enjoy :)
    "
7/ I enjoy the beginning scenes
8/ And then Crash.... "freelancer.exe has stopped working..."

I have the last solution but I don't think it will help:
    the FAQ said also:
"The game crashes right before the Menu appears, what to do ?
    (...)

Deleting the entire folder doesn't work ? Then your case is one of the very few ones... your graphic card is too low for the mod (even if you could early play Freelancer, Crossfire has heavy graphical upgrades) OR you selected some high settings when activating the mod, and so it's recommendable that you activate the low card option when activating it, this means making a fresh install of Freelancer and choosing lower options when activating Crossfire."

Nice! but I have a brand new graphic card of 2 GB , the option say for 128MB or lower... So I didn't try yet...
    My questions are:
Do you thing I should give a last try with that option or did I do something wrong?
Is Crossfire compatible with windows 7?

    Nota:
When I'm running FL+CF, no other programme are running (I use task manager to check)
I downloaded a proper copy of the mod from this website.
I have a proper copy of Freelancer game
(Sorry for my bad English, it's not my mother language (French))

  • Hi
This works for me: Download Revo Uninstaller free version or Pro version 30 day trial, uninstall Crossfire using advanced uninstall, this will also uninstall Freelancer mod manager, then uninstall Freelancer using advanced option in Revo again. In Windows 7 go to Documents\My Games and delete the Freelancer folder. Now install Freelancer and restart if asked, then
install freelancer mod manager 1.31,dont run either one yet.Now install Crossfire, when its done it will open freelancer mod manager and you can activate the mod, then launch Freelancer
from the mod manager (bottom left hand corner) and it should work..well it does for me.
    Good Luck

  • hey what dose it do when you try to run game. i had the same problem with xp pro. went back in and a game save i miss. i had to do install, two times, later found out my hard drive was going bad. what are you installing 1.82 or 1.9....

  • I have to agree with you, took me forever to finally be able to install and play 1.82.

What I did after many attempts

Removed everything and rebooted the computer.

then, installed Freelancer, reboot the computer.

Installed FMM 1.31, reboot the computer.

    opened 1.82, reboot the computer.

Using FMM, activate Crossfire 1.82, reboot the computer.

I have Window XP and I finally manage to get it to work. The funny thing is that I can't play the game in multiplayer mode since it as changed to 1.9 and my download of it wasn't good and it's not working. I have to wait for the download to reappear to try again.

You have to be patient and you will get there, not sure if I would lose my time installing 1.82 since 1.9 will out soon. You can't play 1.82 multiplayer anymore.

(BTW, sorry for my bad english, it's not my first language (french) :) )

    Patience is the word.

If 1.9 is out again, can you point me to the link?

  • Guys, remember, if you want to enter CF 1.82 you have to keep it away from internet by any means, disconnecting yourself, denying it's permission to internet, and more dangerously pressing the Play SP button before anything updates.
It will update your files with 1.9 stuff and will destroy your installation.

  • 1. the crash might either be your savegames that you didnt delete
    or
    2. you have let the launcher patch your Crossfire 1.82 game -> which is not a good idea as it patches it with CF1.9 data atm

I heard about this version, but I believed it's not released yet, but I will try to go off-line next time.
And yes, it downloads some files (12 or 15 I think..).
    Also didn't found a link for CF1.9....
By the way I'm a stand alone gamer, so keeping away from internet won't be a problem.

    For SWAT_OP-R8R:
I exciting trying this mod: 1.5GB file you're mad man! CF should be a huge update on FL....
Good luck and thanks (even I didn't try it yet)

I will you keep in touch and tell you when it will be installed.

  • And yes, it downloads some files

you should make a fresh install - my proposal, don´t do it and wait for the 1.9 link (it´s nearly 1,9 GB btw) and has a real scripted storyline begins after the original one ends, to offer FL feelings - guaranteed. A breathtaker for FL adicted.

  • never understood why so many people have problems with installing CF

    the way I do it:

    install FL
    install FLMM
    install CF
    activate

    play

and that's not even supposed to be the 'proper way'

  • Eureka!!! It's working.
Ok I didn't try it yet, but now I can start a new game.
As many said, I have to keep away from internet and waiting for the next release.
So the launcher doesn't update and every things should be fine.
    To Spiky:
No this is not so simple, trust me, how could you imagine to do NOT follow the install instructions written in every post saying "let the launcher update"....
The way you did I already done that properly many times.....

But anyway, I will try it and wait for the 1.9 release (is there any beta tester? :D )
    Ok ok I will wait.
    Thanks anyway.

  • I'm with spiky on this one. If you have problems with this theni i'd hate to see you install mods for total war the steam versions. Now they are really painful to get working

  • 1.82 and 1.9 all working fine here.

Just remember, after you delete 1.82, reboot your computer so it can sort out the registry.

Delete the folder where FL was stored as it contains some data.
Uninstall FLMM, as it still has 1.82 stored there.

    Fresh install FL
Freash install FLMM 1.3 ONLY,( 1.4 HAS PROBLEMS )
Double click 1.82 or 1.9 to extract into FLMM
Activate Mod, and dont touch a thing.
Once activated, restart computer so the registry can update.
Defrag location where FL has been installed, to tidy it up.
    Then all should be fine.

    THIS FOR 1.9
Do this before you do a fresh install and save ID.

If you want your chars from 1.82 to go on 1.9, use FL ID changer, which enables you to save
    your Server ID.

Do a fresh install as above, DON'T start the game yet as you wont have a server ID stored
    in the registry.
Start up FL ID Changer, change the ID to the saved one, and you will have all your chars back for 1.9
Also it saves OP the hassle of doing it for many ppl too. :D

Pretty much as Spiky said. ;)

  • About the "For CF 1.9" part, I'd say:
-FL ID Changer, yes the only best way for keeping your IDs, from all of your PC you only need the FLIDs text file it produces, nothing else. Download the one I uploaded, with a tutorial, it's the only one working on the Download database.

-Once you have the new install, DO start the game without adding your own ID, create the new ID as the game tells/gives and accept it. Go to FL ID Changer, click "Save ID", congratulations now you have and can use 2 FL IDs for your chars. Just click the manage button to switch them, even without needing to restart the game, and works for any mod and as many mods at once you can make FL work with. BTW the same FL ID works for all mods at once, as you did until now ^^

And about "it's easy" concept ppl, think about other less well managed PCs, that might not work cus it fails to find the CF files(leak of defrag) or for the Aero, or for something corrupt in the Windows install(which is very possible as W installs get lost after a while if you don't keep it clean ), failing to download the whole CF file, etc.

We help people who can't, not who can, those who can install it can help others (or go playing), you're not the only who made it so don't feel special :P
