Spoiling RP

  • I think the fact that on various forums (including this) you can check who's online, where that person is and what ship she/he is flying is quite a spoiler.

I was doing the sol run together with Bethany recently and Max was heading our way and of course we were thinking about taking evasive action when i thought of checking what ship he's in, and learning that he was in a train took the thrill pretty much away (i'm not too sure Max couldn't take me out in a train, but he wouldn't for sure be able to stop me)

  • I do not disagree with you Lucy but I must point out the other side of the argument that this is a really useful tool. I see players online who I want to talk too and join the game. I see large numbers of players all in a single system and join the game to see what I am missing. I also see intruders in Tohoku....

  • Yeah, that's true. But i think it would be enough to show the players, and maybe the location (although that's not really necessary, coz if you decide to log on you can check in the chat window), but not what kinda ship they're in.

  • Is there a need to check the output of these tools while you are in game? Thought that this is only useful for seeing who is online - apart from that i use the chat history to check out who is in game while i am in game. ;)

  • I agree that displaying the ship type of the player online is more information than is needed, even though I personally don't care about that information. And only those who have developed or have access to a catalog of CF ships will be able to identify them in most cases, since most ships are only identified by a number. Either way, it would be better for players to discover in-game what others are doing, by making a bit of RP, in my opinion.

  • CA, various sites tell you the type of the ship not in numbers, but show the name. Dunno why SWAT doesn't. Otherwise i completely agree with you. But i also should say that it's not exactly a big issue.

I think the number thing is cause the mod is scripted in that way, maybe for security reasons or maybe cause OP was lazy to write the names instead of the numbers (unlikely OP being lazy i must say)...

Anyway it can spoil the RP but you learned a lesson, is up to you to go out and check again or just keep on playing. Personnally its something and i didnt thought about...i mean to do that...

And train PvPs are very funny¡¡ petty that you can cruise disrupt with em, i would like to tax in train and tracktor all your cargo...that would be great hehe¡¡

  • I have to agree. I like the idea of not knowing who is in a system. The only problem I see if someone has invaded a clan system.

Goodbye smuggler hunt. Besides, RP would happen only on a more or less coincidental basis.

  • not lazy... just clever
i wont waste time building hash codes for CF1.7 stuff if i have to do the same shit for CF1.8

  • I was thinking about this myself the other day - very recently.

It would probably lead to some amazing rp instances, if people knew who was online - but not where - I would even include clan systems in that.

Even if the ingame chat window was changed so that you only have names - not locations.

If that happened - imo - that would lead to better rp at the expense of pvp.

Probably too late to change things now anyway!!

  • not knowing anything about where the players are located is not an improvement for rp - no it will go totally into the wrong direction. Either way its possible (if you would know how to change the source code and rebuilt the exe) - but imo you would loose hours of hours searching for your opponent - and he was crossing several systems meanwhile? where is the sense in that kind of RP? If you would avoid this you have to force the people always flying near trade lanes and planets - mercs would loose hours or days to find their targets...

imo we should not discuss about deleting the information about the location of players. either way to hard to realize and not practicable imo. ;)
I can recommend not to open ever chat history or having look to the script outputs - then you fly somehow blind^^

  • A middle ground would be to have location knowledge be separated by license. pirates know where pirates are cops know about other cops location etc. But I imagine that would be to complicated implement.

That in fact is the only benefit i see in not knowing who's where.

System invasion by clans would be a regular event and if a clan is caught, then I believe there would be serious issues^^

  • I have to disagree from most of you, Mercs, Police, Pirates, smugglers and Traders would simple have to work a bit more, probably some better (and very expensive) scanners could be used to see people until 40 K of distance, The best thing would be the end of much F1's (sometimes 1 system ahead), the "I'm not in the mood for RP excuse" and so on and finaly a more RP server (in stead of PVP), where people are not only recompesated by their PVP skills but also by they knowledge of the environment and , the worst thing would be the clan system defense but honestly I could live with that.

Honestly everyone knows what trade routes there is in a day, and if we don't, we use our databases (chars that have visited every station and that hold all the profitable goods), and there you will find someone. these would also put more players working together.

In the end, I don't believe that these by itself would fix anything, but I believe that together with other features/rules.... would make an awesome server.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • ... because i was writing a simple php script which is translating most of the Ships Hash- and Systemcodes. You can see it on the PX website - click my sig. It was not meant to be offensive just informative, i just wanted to have what other Servers are using too. So no big deal - watch it or let it be as Tito mentioned above.
