Hey - I hope you are well and managing to get on and do stuff.

Your dad had an account on the forums under the name "Paddy" and when I asked him whether he was Irish he said he was not.

You might find a few of his old posts on this forum if you want to see them.

My little boy is 12 so not as old as you - he mostly plays the Batman games like Arkham Assylum (first game he ever finished) and now Arkham City.

Other games he played a lot are quite old lol - Torchlight, Titan Quest. He also played Oblivion a lot and Skyrim.

Spent a lot of time online with your dad - he was my mentor in a lot of ways.

Once time he asked me to escort him through about 20 systems - even though we were opposing role play - he was merc and I was pirate.

We did that and never told anyone and half the server thought I was chasing him - some cops waited outside X303 to "protect" him as we came through - I started to fight and told him to dock - otherwise he would end up where ever he started from - he didnt and started to attack the cops in his little starflier or whatever it was - he died - it was sooo funny we fell around laughing .

    Great bloke

Er - cough - my only comment would be it is difficult enough for doughnut munching cops to arrest drunken pirates as it is - adding a whole bunch new exits to systems would make their job nigh on impossible and they may as well retire from law enforcement.

Maybe there should be a few closed systems where you can be trapped?

(Secondly and not related maybe those systems could have a 10% increase in rewards or something)

    DRM and UBISOFT

To tell you the truth - I have decided not to buy some Ubisoft games solely based on the negative comments I have read about its DRM - not about the game.

The one time I forgot about my self-imposed embargo, I purchased a game called "From Dust" which reminded some people of the famous Populous -

I regretted that decision straight away as I had many problems getting the game running and then resented the fact that I had to create another account (with Ubisoft or whoever developed the game) to run the game at all.

Well Ubisoft have done a major U-turn and decided to stop having the requirement to be constantly online when playing their games, hip-hip hooray.

No doubt they will see a little increase in sales after this as I will certainly look through their games catalogue and purchase some games I had previously decided not to buy.

Read this article about the Ubisoft decision here -

    Any thoughts?

I have been playing games on home computers since the BBC ‘B’ came out around 1981-82.

In that time I had the Commodore 64, Amiga 500 and then PCs all the way.

In that time – I only purchased a few hints and guide books, a few golden few – and I still have them.

    FBPRO 95
    Fallout 3
    Oblivion

And I purchased a guide book for Final Fantasy 7. I am a bit of a snob when it comes to consoles – I can’t stand them – awful machines that suck the IQ right out of your brain – the games themselves are too expensive and what sort of retard prefers a joystick/control pad over the silky smooth movements of a mouse?

So I missed all the final fantasy series until the company got together and released FF7 on PC around 1998

A Japanese style role playing game – lots of fights – lots of funny moments – I still have the original CDs – but who likes swapping disks around these days right – with hard drives running over 1TB – why do you need to swap disk 1 and then disk 2 etc

Roll on the recent good news – FF7 has been released (again) on PC via digital download – it has been corrected to work on modern machines and has the ability to work within much higher resolutions.

There is an option to cheat and max out all your chars if you want – I am resisting that at the moment –

If anyone wants to experience an all time classic in JRPG – try this out – you won’t regret it. Not available everywhere I am afraid to say.

By the way – if anyone knows about this game and can explain how the material works – I would be grateful.

Interesting read - seem to have more time on my hands recently and was looking for a space type game - got tired of EVE after a good number of successful years there.

Don't know what happened with my clan PX = and really don't want to know

Might just log in as myself and try pirate roleplay for a bit - that was a lot of fun in the old days

Hello again to all te guys that know me - best wishes to you all

This is so sad - Angmar was my first and oldest friend on Crossfire and I am very sad he is past away and moved on to better things - my condolence to his little boy - I am so sorry - your dad was not only a in game here - but a real life hero - I will miss him a lot.

I post here about my first accidental meeting with that old witch king - posted many years ago - but it was the real reason I stuck around in this community for a number of years

Angela Death and the Compassionate Freelancer

"GET OUT OF CUSTODIAN NOW" - I remember from playing last time. So, coming back to Freelancer and trading/missioning to get enough cash to buy a Sabre I thought I would travel to Crossfire by a legal route. I would not go into any Clan system and the route started in Texas.

Now, I am an idiot, and I spent 3 hours getting from Dallas to Crossfire, mainly because I spent a long time going around Midpoints Rift rather than to the centre.

I get to Crossfire- what a relief - what joy in getting there on my own - what a sense of satisfaction. With increased confidence I begin to explore but suddenly hear the scream of guns against metal and realise I am under attack. I try to avoid him but he is too strong and fast and I die. Respawning in Xfire I come out and he kills me again, then again. One time I mange to get into one of the new systems and he follows me and kills me again. Next time I confront him and fire back - but he is stronger and faster than me - I die again.

Bitterly I ask him what he has against me - the mod is called Crossfire, you get there and you die. He says that I am a new player, a nobody and that he kills me cos he can. He says I deserve to die cos I use Nanobots and I deserve to die. He will teach me how to fly properly.

Later that day I decide to build a better ship and skillls and meet this guy again and hopefully I would have a chance - I noted his name. I meet a wandering freelancer who politely asks me how I am doing and I share my sad story. I ask about how to get a bounty put on my murderer and confess my impotence - is this the Crossfire community I heard about and enjoyed briefly once before?

The new chap is a Merc but shows me some compassion and gives me advice and points me in the direction where new equip can be found. I agree to meet him in Xfire later and make my way again to the scene of my earlier terrifying experience. Using the server stats I recognise my killer has a clan and that a group of them are spreading from the centre of Sirius like a disease - no doubt killing unsuspecting innocents.

Craziliy I begin suspecting the Compassionate Freelancer is setting me up - UAC pilots are everywhere and Apollo attacks me in Alaska for no reason - I ask him why and he says cos he can. I am a new player and no challenge to his enormous power - he can kill me easily.

It was not a trap and the Compassionate Freelancer helps me get stronger - but I won't prey on the weak and new. We want this community to grow and encourage people to enjoy playing online. Not to feel they are hunted.

My killer - let me tell you any new character I play will be called Angela of Death as a marker of what sort of cowardly scum we have on this server - that are out there for all new players as a warning.

The Compassionate Freelancer went away in the early hours - no doubt on his lonely quest to right wrongs and set a standard - I salute him but did not catch his name - but he acted like a King.

Lots of negative comments I have read how the game is a simple console port - meaning the developers did not take full advantage of the PCs greater powers on graphics.

The download from steam was only 5 GBs or something - very small compared to other recent blockbusters.

I think this means the game can both be run well on hi and lo spec pcs - my pc is certainly on the (very) low spec side and run ok in 800x600 with quite a few features turned off.

The graphics are ok - it takes a while to appreciate them - but these Elder Scrolls games are more about immersion and the world - I never to the main quest actually - just explore - never about the graphics - infact I think Oblivion had better eye candy

    Fan boy number one

You can add me onto the LOVE BETHESDA petition.

The game ARENA basically spoilled all other RPGs for me - we then had Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion and now Skyrim.

I was going to wait as I was fed up about reading all the fanboys giving the game 10/10 - what a binch of losers I thought - get a life you sad gits.

Then I could not wait any longer - got it on steam - downloaded it - played it - now I can't think about anything else - not even hot ladies or tasty kebabs - not even football -

It took a while to get used to the new interface - but I had the same problem each time the series moved on -

lots of good things I can say - best thing so far for me is that all the dungeons seem totally different - been to lots of random ones and it is like the devs took a lot of care making each one unique -

In oblivion - all the dungeons had that standard hi Elven/ Roman look - nearly all of them.

Looking forward to some quality mods and DLCs coming up

Since Arena came onto the scene - all other RPGs are fillers - taking about Mass Effect and Dragon Age here - none of them compare to my true love -

    Signed - Fanboy number one.

You take care of yourself mate - maybe if you are up to it you can post some of your pics around so we can see if you have any talent - (some of us should have by the way)

    Best wishes

    Az

[quote PX has 9000 members now since all these noobs want to be a member of the strongest clan instead of helping others build up, so there should be plenty of mercs hunting me down.[/quote]

    Cough - it's 9001 mate - don't forget about me - just correcting a factual error - not flaming.

Server looks nice though - was there another graphics update? Real pretty.

    Az

Crap - I typed something and it timed out - so let me be quicker this time

First - my ignorance - I don't know what has been going on (good or bad)
Secondly - server seems healthy - very active - new things - more new things to look forward to
Third - I am flying a pink eagle - first new ship i can afford so far

    1. Have fun - don't spoil fun for others
    2. Best RP is where all participants have a choice (whether to engage or not)
    3. Chase sometimes better than the kill

    4. Had a little chat with some old folks, Inferno and Marauder, and I have to admit that was fun and very nice - like talking to some old friends you not seen for years - So glad you guys have done a good job keeping the universe ticking along- Thanks for that

What happened to the 24/7 ASF/CSF roleplay on the server - that in my opinion the best thing we ever did and allowed a fallback position for those in a roleplay vacuum -

Yeah - there was always a problem of pilots not wanting to fight against their mates - but i never had that prolem - preferred it actually.

No reason why the ASF/CSF can't be broken down into different clans just to keep the server roleplay healthy and it would be good for some souls online to fight alongside their former enemies

    My top 3 would be

    1. Elder Scrolls - they changed gaming for me the way FPS freedom is combined with RPG elements - Arena/ Daggerfall/Morrowing and Oblivion - don't like to buy full price games and can't really afford them - but the next Elder Scrolls might have to be bought - gulp
    2. Damn it - Bioshock - more like an experience rather than gaming - "A man chooses - a slave obeys", Bioshock2 was not as good but pretty good.
    3. Third choice is more diffcult - they top 2 are way above the rest - played CivIV, Mass Effect, Star Wars KOTOR, Total Wars, The Witcher, Deadspace, Football Manager etc,

But I am going to go with Titan Quest Gold - could not put that down - finished it, finished it again and then went through and finished it again - even have an account for my boy to play it as a co op. (Also going to mention called King's Bounty that could be 3b - I have the next two games in that series in my pile)

On Bioware, did not like KOTOR or Jade Empire - can't finish them as it seems you are forced always down a path, little freedom from my point of view.

Was surprised by Mass Effect though - did like that and have ME2 and Dragon Age ready to play soon.

Nice to see an Elder Scrolls sub group on the forums :-)

Ahoy there - thanks for the PM.

    My chars are

    No Mahdss
    Azure Adore

I am usually on one of those but my online time is very sporadic, mostly EU evenings only - Ramadan timetable is affecting my time.

A guy called Telosis is LaserJet

Some other guys as well but I don't know them well.

There is a German speaking clan in EVE formed by some former Crossfire players - the only one I remember is Minniemouse. And I don't remember their clan or anything - but maybe I could find out.

It would help if you posted to char name?

    Ahoy mates

    Would appreciate some advice –

    Svchost.exe

For the last week my PC has slowed to standstill – I thought it was a hardware problem – but I see now from Windows Task Manager – an application called Svchost.exe is using up all my CPU.

Now – Svchost.exe is a general umbrella that a number of Windows services run under – Microsoft rather decided to do it that way rather than give each service its own application – even the Windows Firewall (for god’s sake) runs under a Svchost.

So usually each PC will have a number of Svchost.exe running at anytime – and you can right click on them to see which services are associated with it etc

This particular svchost does not have any service associated with it – so it is hard to stop or know which service is causing the problem – but if I delete the svchost within seconds my PC fixes and runs normal – but next restart the problem happens again.

I have searched through google etc for a cure but most of the solutions are from 2007-2008 and they involved identifying a service associated with a svchost to find the naughty one – but obviously in my case there is no service that I can stop.

I have tried running all the latest windows updates and some malaware updates – still no joy.

I have tried deleting all non Microsoft services as well – that did not help either.

    Any ideas? A virus?

    Many thanks for any advice.

The bravest or thickest pilot - you decide

    Ahoy mates

Thought I would pass on this bit of EVE news that happened recently.

Firstly – people should know that for some time players are able to use in game money to buy game time – to extend their subscription.

Players can buy game time cards from established sellers using paypal or a credit card and once they have that item – or they have the game time code – they have the option to convert it into an in-game item called a PLEX –

This option is available to anyone that logs in – the process is fully automated by CCP.

PLEX cost roughly about 300mill ISK for one and they appear on the market as a normal item – for example, like you can buy a ship or some guns etc

For example – the other day we saw our old friend LaserJet desperately running some missions to acquire enough ISK (EVE in game money is called ISK after the international money code from Iceland) to purchase a PLEX – that way he could extend his account by another month without having to pay any real money.

The thing to remember here is that even if LaserJet would not put in any of his real money into buying a PLEX – at one point – someone did – 30 day GTC are $20 and 60 day ones are $35.

So – the PLEX are on the market – rich people are selling them to automatically generate loads of cash so they can buy the most expensive ships and get a head start.

The experienced players that know how to make ISK by doing whatever they do can buy PLEX and therefore avoid paying real cash to extend their subscriptions.

We have speculators buying PLEX at low points hoping some months down the line the price would increase and then they could sell them off for 20-30 mill profit.

This state of affairs continued until CCP made some changes to PLEX –

Although it was an item like any other item – it was not. PLEX could not be moved – it could not be transferred – it forever stayed in the station it was created – that was about to be changed – now PLEX could be moved – you could stick it in your ship and take it to another system – or systems far far away.

    Everyone was waiting…

Now dear reader – if you had a few of these – and for some reason you wanted to move them – how would you do it?

If it was Freelancer – I would use a VHF, have some clan mates with me for protection – maybe I would wait until the system was empty?

Would you move these items in war time conditions?

Would you move them in one of the smallest ships available?

Would you transfer these PLEX in the busiest system in the whole of EVE? A system where there are normally between 500-1000 people in at all times?

Read here then to see what happened..

Roughly $1,300 of real cash was destroyed when a pilot flying a Caldari frigate called a Kestral decided to undock with 70 PLEX in his cargo – the items were completely destroyed in the explosion.

The said pilot is now KOS by his whole alliance and people recommend he actually delete his character as his name is now forever linked with stupidity and incompetence – his whole alliance is a laughing stock.

    Bravo!

    Great interview.

You may also want to know that CA holds a number of awards from previous years - such as

Most elusive pilot of the year
    Best navigator of the year

And in times of trouble and strife he held the "Most dignified pilot of the year"

His work behind the scenes is unequaled and the work he put into the 24/hour ASF/CSF stuff is quite remarkable.

My best moments with him was trying to catch him in New London one time where he flew too close to the sun - dangerously close and my ship (or my lesser flying skills) meant I could not follow. The whole incident around the Bretonia area where we had almost 20 pirates trying to catch him and I think it was Hook that caught him in the end in Leeds. Also once I killed his store when he was out taking photographs in a nearby system to Casius - then I quickly helped him get everything back into his hold before his IOC goons punished me.

    Bravo

Happy birthday indeed - which one is the question?

Hope you have a good day and get to do some good things - even evil mafioso leaders need cake.

Sorry for the insult - but Germany played like England!

Well - I am out of the office competition - I was hoping for a German win,

Spain played really well and attacked for a win - Germany looked slow and out of energy - too much like England.

Not sure if it was the pitch or something they eat before - was it too hot for them?

1-0 down Germany played faster - but I think if they did that from the beginning they could have won.

Nice to see two new teams in the final - goodbye to the "OLD" Europe and big hello to Holland and Spain - shame they both can't win - hope it is a great final.
