Third quest?

  • Hey everybody! New to the mod, old to Freelancer. Decided to re-install when I saw how far the mod had come from a few years back. I'm loving the quest, however, I too am stuck...

I have 2 black boxes, have decoded the co-ordinates, and found the emergency beacon with the warp hole to DK space. However, despite mapping about 80% of DK space, I haven't found the third black box, or have any idea where to go. There are no more rumors in Coalition bases, sleeper ships in Sov. are empty, as is the emergency beacon. The info on the beacon is interesting, and makes me think the next step is in DK space, but I can't find where, if it is...

Please help? I've been searching for 2 weeks now...

It is a common place for people to get stuck, Kane. The clues are (IMHO) a little bit weak at that point, and some of the objects are visible to some players but very nearly invisible to others... depending on graphics options and/or installation choices.

    The missing clue talks about:

Ironically, even though you know that you are missing a clue, the clue is not very helpful when you do find it. Previous clues are more important, regarding:

Theoretically, those clues should lead you to:

However, when you investigate that system, the trail can go cold because you have to find a secret object:

Some people claim that they can see that object from a long distance, but I had to do a painful grid search in a system annoyingly full of asteroids. As I said above, some people can see those objects at greater range, depending on your video card and the settings that you choose when you install the game.

    Do those hints help?

  • Sounds like I'm fortunate, in that I have a fairly high-end pc (I can run Metro 2033 of max everything...). I've never tested but I can see jumpholes from pretty far off, halfway across a system if there is no clouds or asteroid fields in the way. I found Blinch's ship in Styx, but no mention was made of a hidden Rheinland base... I can pick up the search from there, but I'd like to find the missing clue(blackbox?). Any hints on where I can find it?

Edit: I take that back, DK space jumpholes seem to pop in about 28K to 32K. And the Hieron>Gurm hole popped in at about 60K. Larger stuff pops in much farther away.

    Hidden objects and Graphics Choices
As far as I can tell, the problem(s) with finding some objects gets worse in the more newly-created systems. I think that it has something to do with eye-candy such as background dust. The problem is very obvious in the Inner Core, where some people can see jump gates at long range while others have to be almost on top of a gate before it can be seen.

If I am correct about the cause of this issue, it is not a matter of high-end or low-end equipment. It has more to do with special effects design decisions, installation choices, and the fact that the systems were "tested" by one guy under one set of installation criteria -- which is hardly an exhaustive test (although I am sure that it was exhausting!).

In any case, it is a difficult situation to report because some people see things and others do not. OP is the only person who knows, with certainty, at what range a specific object should become visible.

EDIT: The jump gate to Venn (in the Inner Core system) is a good example. I had to be very close to see it (maybe 10k?), while others report being able to see it from across the system.

    Missing Clue(s) in Altair
Perhaps somebody else can help you to find your missing clue, but I do not recall the exact system. If you have not already done so, you can check the Altair map to be sure that you have searched all DK systems: http://silverarrows.forumclan.…-sector-maps-t100.htm#262

How to pick up the trail
Those are three different topics, Kane. :)

    1) Jack Blynch was not in his ship, was he? Do you recall seeing rumors that he may have gone somewhere else? If not, then:

    2) The clue that you are missing is unrelated to Jack Blynch's ship. As I said earlier, I did not find the missing clue to be particularly helpful, but it says that:

    3) You cannot pick up the trail from Blynch's ship. The place to pick up the trail is where he went to. And that, my friend, IS related to:

    Is that enough?
Do you have enough to go on now? Let us know if you need more.

  • I found my way to Utopia, found Dervon, jumped to the DK homeworld system, and am currently trying not to puke in hyperspace... The DK stations ask for help but do no tell where to go, is that the end of the quest? Is there anything in hyperspace other than a jumpgate to Menton (which is the only DK sector I haven't explored on that side of the universe yet)? Hole to Utopia was actually located in Omega 41. Thanks a million for all of your help by the way. In some sectors there is a lot of ambient dust, but the small, multi-colored jumpholes all seem to pop in at about 30K in clear open space. All settings on install were set to max, so that seems to be the LOD range on those, unless there's a way to check/change that?

Haha! I had the same reaction to hyperspace... it is pretty cool that a computer program could make you feel physically ill, isn't it? 8o

Maybe. As far as I can tell, the Quests end at Phanchdar.

There are some parked ships there. Kill a few and you can grab their guns. Otherwise, that's it.

Oh! Well, then, that explains why you had trouble finding all of your clues! You will definitely want to go to Menton, if only to better understand the story.

Interesting! My memory and the old map both say otherwise, but the new map is consistent with your experience. Maybe OP changed the location to help people who were getting stuck? Either way, I am glad that you found it.

    Good.

LOD ranges are specific for each object, but other factors also affect an object's visibility. In any case, it sounds as though you were able to see the intended features.

So, um... how come you did not find your way to Menton in two weeks of exploring Altair?!

:) Just kidding... Crossfire is vast. It is easy to miss something if you do not know what to look for.

Congratulations. It sounds as though you completed (or nearly completed) the Quests.

  • Yeah, the last black box was in Menton. Got there from hyperspace, which I guess is the back way. Those systems with nothing but one huge asteroid field, and some with a cloud field on top of that, are kinda frustrating to search through... Is there a better scanner than the Adv. Subspace with the 12.5K range? Now that I'm done with that, I'm gonna try my luck at Hiruga and then find Death Valley and Lost Paradise. I love this game and this mod!

    Yes. Glad you found it.

Definitely. One system like that is fun. After that, it is just tedious.

I believe that the limit is hard-coded into Freelancer. So, no... you have the best.

  • 1. The mod is really the BEST (and i played all mods u can download at mod database like Monkey universe or tekagi's treasure etc ) ,well done OP.

    2. I've been in the Dervon System and do the Quest and now i'm exploring this System and hope to find a Wreck or something else it's really big (u need a Sleeper Ship to explore:P ).

    3. Before i done the Quest ,i 've explore the Inner Core and the neighbour Systems ( also extrem Big ) .Then I've read the Forum to investigate what the Systems held for me ,nothing intristing and I dicide to fly back to Omega 3 . I want to dock at the Anomalie in the Inner Core to go to Omega 3 and nothing happens . The Anomalie spits me out and i'm back in the Inner Core ,not in Omega 3. I Stuck there .And there is no way out because i'm hostile to DK.At weth i would be destroyed by the Defense Turrets (haha ,in SP u never have a chance to get in this System ,but i've saved at Omega 3.Is this a Bug or am i unlucky?

4.Why are there no DK's in Omicron Alpha ,Gamma and Theta ? In 1.7 there are some...

5.It would be nice ,to have an dockable Stations on the way to DK's Space to fill up nanobots and Bat's example the Worrior Stations .This would be smoothie .

6.A little bit horrible is the Utopia System .Why in hell u put this Weaponplatforms around Battleship Bismark????? When i spot the Bismark it is Neutral to me ,the weaponplatforms not and in the infocard from these platforms is no hint from whom they are ,so i can't fit up my rep to get them neutral.Only the Xenos are hostile to me ,every other group is neutral to me so i don't understand this It makes me crazy that I can't dock on it and i can't see the reason why?
I blow up all Cruiser's and Weaponplatforms ,dock at the Triangle and fly back ...and what did i see ...all the Platforms and Cruiser's are at the same Place ...This is a Main Logical Error in the whole FL game ,when i blast a station away ,than it has to be away for a long Time not for minutes!!!! ----It is really magic---.

7.I really miss only one Ship: The Valkyre N1 (in Monkey Universe i fly it and it was awesome) u get cruise speed in 2 sec :P

But all in one i have fun and enjoy the gameplay .

many thx for the fast help :)

Hell yeah ....nice fights with Dom'Setek's and nice guns to loot and make money 8)
haha and i waste my time with trading and Missions against Xenos to earn Money ,this way is much more profitable.

One Question ...is there a ship (not the Bullpop MK III) wich can carry 6 class 10 weapons?

have a nice die at Inner Core ,

  • 3. once you reached the inner core you have to find a different way out (actually the news on the GMG station say that it might be a one way road and that it would require a different route back)

    4. actually there are 2 reasons for removing the DKs from those systems (1. the encounters did interfere with the original ones and caused some troubles, 2. the DKs were purely meant to be scouts in CF 1.7 and now in CF 1.8 the situation has changed due to the story -> there were similar changes in previous versions such as the removal of the nomad controlled coalition carriers from sol once the system got cleaned by the alliance)
-> the latest state of a CF version does not neccesarily reflect previous versions and their story elements

    5. sure it would be nice to have a station there and it would be conflicting the storyline

    6. actually you are not only hostile to xenos, serveral factions of the original game aswell as CF (which obviously contains that original game) do exist 2 times. One for normal gameplay and one for story elements.
Explaination by example: Rheinland is usually neutral when you start a new game, maybe even friendly. But the storyline requires that at some certain points the players (trent) get attacked by nomad infected rheinlanders. These appear to you as rheinland on your screen with a hostile reputation. So they are... im explaining it with a picture... "evil twins".
There are several factions which appear 2 times in FL... one hostile, one friendly.
    Why are those ships hostile?
coz ive choosen the wrong the wrong of the twins (my mistake, and well known to me)
easy to fix... if i would be still working on CF
the other thing you mention is something that can not be changed.... its simply a limitation of the FL engine that stations respawn

    7. i dont know that ship and i doubt that i ever would get permission to use it
however even if i would have gotten such a permission then the ship would have very different stats and handling
