Freeport 7 (system)

  • With huge help of wombat1940 I'm doing for few months updates to the crossfire systems in wiki here on portal. Part of this is creation of descriptions for all CF Systems which should reflect SP and also MP matters. Some of systems however are "tough", especially in case when they should fit into Freelancer/Crossfire existing lore. We did nice progress with this, but now we reached Freeport 7 system and this place is starting point for all this story in Freelancer/Crossfire ... however Freeelancer lore here is different :) (FL wikia link)

    Initial description idea:

This is the System where Trent commenced his epic journey. It was at station Freeport-7, built by the Zoners in an unnamed System, located in the outer ring of the Border Worlds, which later (much later) became named as Freeport 7. Exact position of this station, together with the existence of this System and how to access the same, was not made public. Many thought that this station is/was in the Sigma 17 System, and it was exactly this that the Zoners wanted. No one, except maybe a selected few, knew about the existence of an unknown jump gate, located on the opposite side of the big suns in this System. The gate seemed to be nonfunctional. After the station's destruction, there were even less reason to reveal the truth to the public; and those who had knowledge or suspicions were silenced one way or another.

Later, after the public revelation of the existence of X-3043, it were found not only ruins of the Freeport_7 station, but also a small number of jump-holes leading to other Systems. One of these led to the Frankfurt System, which was most likely the path used in the past by the Zoners, when they first found the Freeport 7 System.

Some question which appeared when discussed this with Ajay:

    1. How get Trent there?
    2. Makes existence of FP7 sense at all?
    3. Why such large station there?
    4. How Zoners reached that place?
    5. How about debries in Sigma17? (which however do not have name on them, ruins in FP7 system have)
    6. Why is there Trade-lane in Quantos?
  • Few possible explanatioins to the questions above:

    1. this is not known, it is a chance for make a nice story about it
    2. existence of this station can be exaplained with Zoners religious/individual nature, when they find big unknown gate (which seemed was not working) and wanted keep this for themselves. They had enough resources for bases build and used them also in this case. They also had there jump-holes to another systems, many riches and new finds. CF/FL have more examples of explorers which not wanted share theirs finds easily.

Nomad gate to X in system also can factually support idea how the Nomads get there for attack so easily :) .
    3. see 2
    4. luckily access to FP7 is through Quantos and there you can get only from the jump-hole in Frankfurt, which is out of regular travel routes.
    5. dunno yet, it also have potencial for story addition.
    6. last moment idea .. trade-lane in Quantos was build in support to transport materials needed for building of FP7 station.

    All coments/ideas/criticims are welcome :)

  • 1. This could have been arranged by Lonnigan.

Another question, what was Liberty doing there (the rescued people were deliviered to Manhattan and a couple of Defenders were escorting the transport leaving the area) when the closest House to Freeport 7 is Rheinland?

"Across the savage skies and through the fissures in the fields,
The rumble of the engines and the trundle of the wheels,
Through hell and horror trudge and yet their spirits never yield.
Will they sing of these forsaken pawns of war?"
-Miracle Of Sound, "Pawns of War".

Maybe to avoid the need to answer questions and Rheinland was at that time already under Nomads influence and offensive to others.

  • Well, another detail:

The Order used FP7 as a neutral ground to cut a deal with Syd and obtain the artifact McGuffin. I doubt the Order's intel would be that lousy to miss or ignore the giant Nomad Gate in the system. So basically, they chose a station in the same system with the Nomad Gate and didn't see the Nomad attack coming?

Moreover, why did they pick Freeport 7? Syd stole the Artifact from Planet Pygar, Omicron Theta. Since back then FP7 could only be accessed from Quantos, he would have had to go a long way from Omicron Theta to Freeport 7, not to mention he would have crossed at least one Rheinland system (albeit if he used Omicron Theta->Sigma-17->Sigma-13->Frankfurt->Quantos->FP7 route, he wouldn't show up near frequented lawful routes). They could have met at Freeport 9, Freeport 5, Yanagi Depot or Bruschal Base (Junkers/Bundschuh would probably allow that meeting).

However, Syd could have proposed these exact terms to his deal with the Order, but if he was stuck-up like this and didn't agree to Order's proposal for a safer meeting place, what was stopping The Order from intercepting and ganking him?

  • Hmm, to be honest I do not know all these details (about Order involvement), however:

Nomad gate (and is questionable whether anyone at that time could have idea what exactly these gates are and who built them) could be exactly that reason why Order could like to have base in FP7 system, or at least have there presence of one theirs operative. Nomad Gate was not active, Nomad were able disable it (like was shown in campaign) and it also happened later in Death Valey. Nomad Gate also is not only one reason why is Freeport 7 system interesting, or why it can be interesting for those searching new things ... there are also two jump holes leading to another systems. Build station in Freeport 7 system (when gate to X was closed) makes perfect sense, it is very good place for further expansions.

Yea, it is a long(er) way for Sid with artefact, but on other side maybe can be said that it IS safer to hide yourself on station which exact position is not publicly known and which is little more further distant (and conncected with serie of "unofficial" jump-holes), than to stay at station only one system away.

Logical seem also this that Sid used serie of jump-holes, while crossing Rheinland space only shortly in Frankfurt.

... Bruchsal looks as good place for meeting, but that station is/was in conflict with local Rheinlanders and visitor could easily come there in "bad" time.

  • WELL DONE BOYS!!!!!

There's really no limit to what we "know".

It is rumoured And I know that Trent wasn't the clean cut goodie, goodie boy he appeared to be. My understanding is that Trent had been marketing weapons to the Nomads and was followed to Station Freeport-7 by the Nomads, who did not know its exact location. They were in stealth (not sure if that's the right word) mode and he never saw them. His own craft was taken in for repairs shortly after his arrival at Freeport-7. Stealth mode, used by the Nomads to help destroy Station Freeport-7, was know about to Trent, but the workings of it not know. He had hoped to discovery its secret by trading weapons with the Nomads, a foolhardy position to take knowing what we now know about the Nomads. We have the destruction of Freeport-7 to show for that! Throughout all Trent's Freelancer campaign missions, he constantly searched for the Nomad's Stealth secret as his major priority. The discovery, if found, was not to help humanity but just to help himself! What he would have done with it is anybody's guess, but rest assured, he would have put it to use only to advantage himself.

Please be careful with this information. Trent is still out there ……. He will deny it …….. and so will I. I have enough enemies here already.

Sorry. Remind me who Syd is …….. Thanks.

  • Syd is the thief who stole the artifact from Sinclair on Planet Pygar.

    I also found this:

Edison Trent was presumably born on the Planet Leeds in Bretonia space. As a child, his parents were killed in a tragic accident, and he was taken in by a family friend, Richard Winston Tobias, the equipment dealer on Leeds. After completing his apprenticeship to Tobias as a spacecraft mechanic, Trent grew restless. Leaving his girlfriend Vanessa behind, Trent sought his fortune in the Border Worlds.

After making a deal to ship a large amount of Boron, Trent traveled to Freeport 7 to seal the agreement, which was destroyed by unknown forces before he could get paid. Although his ship and Boron shipment were destroyed with the station, Trent escaped in a life pod with Sam Lonnigan, his skin, and five hundred credits to his name. The pod was picked up by a rescue ship, which took the survivors to Planet Manhattan.

Trent's favored booze is a Bretonian drink called "Sidewinder Fang"; he soon learns upon landing on Manhattan that "Liberty Ale" is not to his tastes ... and his journey in Freelancer/Crossfire universe is on the beginning.

But this doesn't exclude the possibility of my story regarding Trent being correct …...

    My comment: Well ……. that's their story …… and I have mine ……. ;)8o8o8o

  • How about something like this - Trent flies back to Leeds some years after the final mission and meets his old girl friend Vanessa - who asks for an explanation as to why he left without a word so many years past - they both settle down to a Sidewinder Fang marathon as Trent narrates the whole story ( as he does it the story fades into a docking bay and the yong Trent flies out with the Ton of Boron loaded up and makes his way to Freeport 7 - having several adbventurous stops on his way there) this chapter end with a cut scene of Trent an the rest of the crew survivers getting aboard the escape pod and the inevitable pick up and rescue of said pod by Liberty ships - and a fade in into the Bar and a table full of empty Sidewinder Fang glasses.

With Trent and Vanessa walking out of the bar, heading for their next adventure. ????? okk.
