Svchost.exe CPU killer

    Would appreciate some advice –

    Svchost.exe

For the last week my PC has slowed to standstill – I thought it was a hardware problem – but I see now from Windows Task Manager – an application called Svchost.exe is using up all my CPU.

Now – Svchost.exe is a general umbrella that a number of Windows services run under – Microsoft rather decided to do it that way rather than give each service its own application – even the Windows Firewall (for god’s sake) runs under a Svchost.

So usually each PC will have a number of Svchost.exe running at anytime – and you can right click on them to see which services are associated with it etc

This particular svchost does not have any service associated with it – so it is hard to stop or know which service is causing the problem – but if I delete the svchost within seconds my PC fixes and runs normal – but next restart the problem happens again.

I have searched through google etc for a cure but most of the solutions are from 2007-2008 and they involved identifying a service associated with a svchost to find the naughty one – but obviously in my case there is no service that I can stop.

I have tried running all the latest windows updates and some malaware updates – still no joy.

I have tried deleting all non Microsoft services as well – that did not help either.

    Any ideas? A virus?

    Many thanks for any advice.

  • svchost is often target for virus attacks which suddenly cause high cpu usage on that process

  • svchost is a process handler of windows (active from win 2000 and up) it´s handling all direct link libraries which are neccessary to run certain services.

You just can show which dll´s are loaded if you are loading the command line interpreter of windows (dos window) and type tasklist /svc . This will show you all connected dlls. Just bringing it to the point: you can kill the dll if you don´t need it but as soon as you will start the application which will need a dll svchost will start it again. Svchost is btw. preloaded by windows no matter which one from 2k up.

    So how can this help?

If you have a dll which is slowing your PC down stop the running processes (for example with the tool Huor mentioned) one after the other. As soon as your PC is working better write down the dll which was causing the problem and search for an update/new version etc. or simply deinstall the application. This way it will not happen again but you will need some time to find the evil dlls ;)
