FL Intro ships

  • These two ships are rebuilds of ships that can be seen in the FL intro. Took a bit time (many many hours to rebuild them just based on the movie.


    This is a coalition battleship (dark texture just like in the intro)


    This one is an alliance fighter (no texture yet):


    what do you think?



    there are 3 other ships that can be seen in that intro
    1. another coalition battleship
    2. a coalition fighter
    3. an alliance transporter (if i need to guess)


    unfortunatly those ships can only be seen for a very short time and usually only from the same angle. So its pretty hard to create ship models since there is way too much room for speculations how those ships really look like. Dunno if that can be done.


    The 2 finished ships are pretty close to their originals... eventhough they are in a lower detail as you wouldnt really notice those details ingame.

  • The Coalition BS looks like one big gun :S I don't like it ... Into the intro there aren't many details that can be seen easily but those i see are not correct. The alliance fighter is ok ;]

  • Was the upper one the huge one with those yellow engines?
    If yes, and if it would be own-able, and if the engine would look the same as in video, this would be so awesome! :)

  • yes - that is the ship but the engine does not look that way atm as i still have to build a new texture for it (it is looking very similar to it atm)


    and yes - since there are no player battleships in altair yet i wanted to introduce this one

  • the forward Guns are repetitive i never saw a BS with this effect in any FL Mod. Could be a awesome gimmick...

    Thats your opinion, i personaly like the idea to have some of the intro ships in the game.


    I watched the intro probably 1000 times in my life it´s the background blender for the PX Intro and it´s from my point of view one of the best Gaming Intros ever - not because of the details and effects but of the atmosphere and storyline.


    Also the ship can be used for solwars later maybe? When i saw the Alliance Fighter and the Coaliton Cruiser (? dunno i guess it´s a Cruiser) i automaticaly thought about pilotable Sleeperships and some ideas i will not tell OP because he could like them and would start to put it in for 1.8 which would make it appearing later again...

  • OP from the pic that magnet has post I find 2 things that you could change in the model to make it more accurate to the pic one.


    First is the rear panel, the square one with a red star on it...that one doesnt look square but with a sharper angle in the top, and rather than completly vertical, looks liike it is a bit inclinated in the top part (where the angle is) to the center of the ship (i mean its not a 90º angle but a 80º one more or less). I hope you understand hehe.

    But i think it just need a bit of details and it will be great...why deleting it?...no way man...

  • no i wont do any changes to this ship
    i took many screenshots to build this ship as close to the original as possible
    the side plates are square as they fit exactly over the mid part of the ship which seems to be the reactor


    it has 4 front plates with different that protect the forward guns
    2 side fins at the lower side of the ship and 4 rear plates with different angles which protect the engines



    the only thing that is not like the original are plate connections with the hull coz they originaly reach over the plates which i left out coz in FL you would not even see such details
    and the reactor rips coz that model already more polygons then any other coalition or custom ships


    for sure I will not waste another 10 hours for details which dont exist or which can not even be seen in FL

  • To be quite honest, the stills don't truly do it justice as it's how it looks in the game that matters.


    So I think in all fairness, it's an excellent rendition considering the limitations of the intro.


    In addition, as no one else has even ventured to recreate an intro ship, players should be less critical as one can never fully exploit what the developers had in mind at the time the game was released.

  • Okay, so I know this is a bit of grave digging, but I hadn't stumbled across the thread yet. Both models look pretty good in my opinion. There are a few fighters featured in the intro - one of which you worked with - and I was wondering if anything is known about their names or capabilities? Not having played SL my assumption had always been that the ships in the FL intro were all late-game arrivals in Starlancer. I appear to have been mistaken. The intro video's textures on the fighter did not look very consistent with those featured in Starlancer, but I imagine there are a number of looks that would suit it well.


    As for the battleship, it only seems a bit clunky because the intro video features it from points of perspective nearly all to the fore or aft. The details are good but the reason for the confusion is that the screenshots do not accentuate the slenderness of the ship (even though its clearly there). If viewed from the front or back it would look more familiar to people. The design is interesting and if it's featured in 1.8 it will be nice to trade in my Reliant and give this a try.


    Out of curiosity by the way, is there a way to replicate the fixed, forward-firing cannons on such a ship? NPC Liberty cruisers appear to already have this, and the weapon effect is somewhat similar to what is seen in the intro. A capital ship like the battleship you've replicated may have interesting PvP dynamics if three of the traditional turrets were to be replaced with railguns (i.e. forcing a less-than-agile ship to point towards its target to maximize damage... and making it more effective against static targets than fighters). Hypothetically speaking, is such a feature even possible in Freelancer?

  • OP, the first capship is awesome. the fighter reminds me of the "Buster" in X3:The Reunion. perhaps you could take a few ideas from that model and apply it to this ship. it has very similar features and the wep mounts in X3 are placed well. have u seen that model?
