    Hi all,
    My PC (I built in late 1999) has given me so many probs lately that I have to say I won't be flying with you all anytime soon. It figures that when I was getting more available free time that this would happen ?(


    Anyway....its not a virus, malware, spyware or anything else......I have reinstalled windows twice already......seems that some component of my mobo is going bad


    I can get windows working for like 15-20 mins and then it starts just rebooting and rebooting and rebooting.


    For now I must say goodbye my friends....I hope to see you in space in the future

    sounds like a possible over heat of the CPU. Try using some thermal paste. Its cheap enough to get some and may solve ur problem m8

    HA!!! that happened to me a few month's ago as well!! (same age) lol i think reinstalling windows has some limitations to what a PC can handle:D i reinstalled mine about 3 or 4 times :D

    Thanks....i'll keep working on it.....this time i'll strip the pc to nothing and start checking/cleaning all connections, drivers etc as I go. LOL I guess I should slipstream sp3 onto a disk to speed up the process and maybe avoid something thats happening?

    ask around, some of your friends or family might have some spare parts that might fix the prob, thats how i got mine working :D i nice friend gave me a custom cased PC with a P4, and im back lol

    Well I thik its the video card....I have tweaked all settings and go a little more stability but still not right. Anyway I don't have access to any spare parts and no available cash for a new card so I'll juust try to get it running stable at very low resolution and try again.


    PS I'm gonna try playing with new settings....I'll try not to cause probs for others or the server....if I disappear suddenly, you'll know what happened ;(

    question. what type of video card ya running? and did you reinstall it recently? we might be able to fix the prob :D and if its a reg prob, get advance system care v3, it's free and works wonders :D and if you lived in NZ i would have gave ya a few parts:D stocked up in case mine broke again LOL

    You ever checked your Bios Settings? Maybe something is running on the same IRQ as you VCard is (on old Computers this may cause problems). Another Idea could be the system temperature (not proper running fan on the Videocard for example).

    The vcard is ATI Radeon 9550 AGP 256mb.....I have disabled fast wrtites etc thru bios which helped a little bit. Vcard only has a heatsink....no fan. Still waitig to hear back from ATI regarding the card. The card is approx 3 mos old...it worked fine for approx 2 weeks and has caused issues ever since then. I'll check out advance system care v3 and see if it helps me at all. I did get on and play.....just random crashes still but it doesn't seem to affect others at least:)

    Have you downloaded the latest drivers for that card? It's getting a bit old now, but ATI should still have the last version still availble in archive. Failing that, it's possible that I have a spare card, which would be an upgrade for you, if your AGP slot is 8x/4x.

    [697] updating to the latest driver can fix most prob's :) the most simple way to check if you have the latest driver is to go to (Microsoft update) and if ATI gave the driver to microsoft it should be in the hardware updates (if you use XP):D and when you download advance system care v3, get your windows disc ready, then click the utilities button then click the system file checker button, put the windows disc in, and if its auto play runs, cancel that and follow the instruction's, it's a tool that's checks windows files and repairs them :D it might help;) and in the standard options like (maintan windows or diagnose system) if something goes wrong, just activate a restore point! :D it's a great tool!! and i know how it fell's to lose a PC, it happened to me a few months ago;) that's why im trying to help, and something you should consider, is to bakup your personal files just in case its the hard drive or the worst happens...

    The problem has progressed and is now much worse.....i had the latest drivers, latest mobo bios........latest everything. I rolled back to xp sp2 reinstalled driver from microsoft update, i have removed memery and tried different configs.......at this point even xp screen saver crashes the system to bsod. I'll uninstall everything and try one more time with this card. It will be a couple days before I try again as I'm just really not in the mood to screw with this thing any longer. I figure I better go through and make sure nothing else could be a problem.

    PS, @CA Very much thanks for your kind offer.....I'll pm you if everything else on the pc seems ok. I don't want to waste your time and generousity if something else (other than this card= i bought in August) is causing this issue



    Edit: btw does anyone know if 1.8 will require a bit more powerful pc or will a pc that runs 1.7 be ok?

    from what i can guess. it's the hard drive.. or the bios is damaged.. i had the same probs to... i recommend you start to backup before it happens...something i didn't do when it happened to me...


    CF 1.8? if you can get yours or another PC running, with your 256mb APG v card, i think it should run smoothly:D


    I use a GForce 6200 128mb PCI card. man... i hope mine can run LOL at lest with a PCI i can put it in any PC LOL :D

    I have noticed an increase in insability with older PCs and XP. Microsoft are now pushing Vista and so the development on XP updates/patches must be taking a back seat. So I suspect that recent patches may be to blame.


    If you happen to do another reinstall of XP, try just updating XP as far as SP2. Then see if this makes any difference.


    Obviously you will need to be careful as this will leave known security issues unaddresses.
