BioWare Founders Receive New Award for “Revolutionary” Impact on Video Games

Display MoreBioWare is known for many epic adventures, including the likes of Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and more. The release of Baldur’s Gate is what really made the studio take off back in 1998, three years after Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka co-founded the company in Edmonton.
Now, 23 years after they started BioWare, and six years after leaving the company, they have been awarded for their “revolutionary contributions to the videogame industry as a developer and co-founder of an internationally renowned studio.” Her Excellency the Right Honorable Julie Payette named both Zeschuk and Muzyka members of the Order of Canada, which is “the cornerstone of the Canadian honors system.”

In the interview with CBC News, Zeschuk said that receiving the call was “very shocking.” He continued, “We just try to do great stuff and try and help people and try and work with great people and build things, and to be recognized for that is really an amazing honour.”
Muzyka went on to credit the employees and how they “made every day a joy just to come to work.” “That’s always been something I think both of us have felt—surround ourselves with people who are smarter than us and passionate and bright, just sparks that you can learn from and grow with,” he continued. “We always tried to treat everybody we worked with with great respect.”
The BioWare co-founders are still in the Edmonton area following their split from the company in 2012. Zeschuk has since founded a brewpub and continues to be involved in many charitable movements, while Muzyka founded ThresholdImpact, an investment company with a focus on “sustainable, profitable impact investing.”
