  • Even though it is NOT the date most germans would have choosen, but the night of the fall of the wall carries already a heavy, historical burden and the jewish (world?) community would have never accepted a celebrating germany on the 9th of November ("Reichskristallnacht).
Even though it is NOT the outcome of the process of Reunification, that almost every german hoped fo the following weeks and months, which became more a "takeover", than a new start, as originally demanded even by the constitution of "western germany" (preamble of the "Grundgesetz").
    Still

    lets celebrate

It shows the possibility of peacefull changes to borders, that devide people of commen culture, language, feelings and ways of living, of a deep buried commen "peoples soul".
Let it be a beacon for others as well as a "lecture" on how it could be done as well as some things should not be done.

    (
:D Beside this, without it I would have never met my wife. :D )

  • countries which are supposed to be one, became one. Although there are still a lot of prejudges from western part towards the eastern part and vice verse, we are one country united. The biggest economy in the EU. It shows other countries how living, working together aiming for the same goal can work.

We are sure not perfect, although we claim it to be :I
We are working to get better with slow progress and generally seen a lot has improved since the 1989 in both parts of germany. Some regions still have their homework to do and not all that glistens is gold. But nonetheless germany is a great country with a great nation. I can be happy enough to have grown is eastern germany and now am living in western germany :)

  • i don't want to open a political discussion (anymore :D ) but need to remind that without Russia's permission and help Germany would never become what it is and therefore we should also respect this great country and be a little bit more sensitive to Russia's needs. our countries are linked to each other by many historical issues. we should never forget about this!

Without russia - aka Stalin - being such a ... "threat" germany would have been split up even more

    early division plans

    or

    Roosevelt-plan

some already 1918 known french "wishes

    late french plan

    and almost unknown

    dutch annexion plans

You're definitly right about the "historical issues" between germany and russia, a centuries old history of trying to become close related :
by exchange of princesses becoming czarina, by brotherly dividing ... polish cakes,
by economical, military and political agreements against westerly wishes
(Berlin treaty 1922, Rapallo treaty 1926, 2nd Berlin treaty 1930 prolonged 1934/35(!), last but not least the (infamous) Molotov-Ribbentrop treaty).
Yeah germany and russia bear quite some commeon history :P

But "permission and help" 1989/90 ??
More kind of desinterest and neglecting the former sowjet security glacis of satellite states, which Gorbatschow rendered too expensive und useless for the then UdSSR.
Therefor destabilizing these regimes, that they crumbled away under the pressure of their population, knowing that no russian tank would support them anymore - against this population.

Nevertheless, esp. we germans should be gratefull that Michail Gorbatschow was more interested in the UdSSR itself, than in what was going on in germany/europe. :hutab:

  • Humans are never as simple as saying with or without something, stuff happens better or worse, stuff just happens differently... never "perfect" anyway.

    (was a nicce party :00000436: and :00008040: not to forget :00000461: )

but I think this was something unique in history, that a people,
divided by war (hot and cold)
could tear down the walls and borders between them
(I admit, that in a poliutical, psychological and emotional way we are still occupied with this task)
    without weapons, war and violence

That's something worth to be repeated.

  • I don't think that the Germans are the only ones to celebrate this. It's a major thing for all Europe too.
( And please stop putting that green and red stuff in the beers, it's close to blasfemi (if you are religious about beers) )

IF you mean the Woodruff and Strawberry syrup used for traditional "Berliner Weiße" - be informed that the BEER is poured into the syrup
(As a german and as a born Berliner I AM a bit religious about that - by heart and nature, almost "hardcoded" into my genes :P)
not vice versa, which makes a HUUGE difference :D

..and DEFINITLY not as what these belgians do, who dare to BREW the beer with such stuff :arghs: .
    That's truely blasphemy. :00007579:
