I'm new to multiplayer. How does chat work? Someone initiated a chat (and kindly gave me some nice euqipment) but I didn't even know how to say thank you. I could see the player when I clicked on chat. How can I talk to someone?

In MP you can use console commands: In the chat window (press Enter) type /help for list of all Hook commands that are available to you.You need press Enter, then you can write message. Channels (message in system or only to one player) can be chosen with arrow keys up/down.

Chat Control allows you to dialog with other players during gameplay.
To open a chat window, press ENTER, type your message, and then press ENTER again.
There are three chat channels: System messages everyone, Group messages everyone in your group, and Private messages specific individuals.
To select one of these channels, click the Chat Control icon in your Neural Net, and then select either the desired channel or the appropriate player name.

One small clarification to the above post: the Chat Control icon is located in the upper right corner of the screen (along with inventory, map, etc.)
You can also open it with a keyboard shortcut ("Y" by default).
