Mid-week madness in the Twilight Zone

  • My time zone is GMT+12 and so I tend to play at an off time from most others. I have heard people online with me refer to this as the twilight zone (good name I thought).

    Because of this I cannot make it to normal server events (I work). To this end I would like to see if it would be worthwhile starting an event for our time of day. Here are my thoughts;

    TIME : Wed 08:00 GMT
    DURATION : 2 hours

Concept : Free for all PvP in Arena, winner is player with most kills by 10:00. You can die as often as you like so this is different to Top Gun. Winner will get the title "Twilight Serial Killer" (or hopefully something less tacky).

    RULES :
    1) Must start from Isis and sell all bots and bats before taking off.
    2) All talk to be in System Chat only.
    3) Late starters can use Bats and Bots to get to Isis but cannot use guns etc until they take off to start playing.

People can use any ships they want.
People can use any weps they want.
People can fight in groups(only one person will get the kill) or solo(people will know from the system chat).

If this goes ahead I will try to organise a cash reward as well.
It would be nice if normal PvP cash rewards/costs were relaxed for this event but I do not know if this is possible.

Anyone who is interested or with good ideas for improvement please post here.

  • Here is the really cool thing, you are GMT+12 i am GMT-5 so there are times when i am playing you from a day behind.

  • I think it's an awesome idea. Classic deathmatch in Arena, hats off to you, Red Katipo, for bringing it up. This is just the kind of thing this server needs -- the gloves come off!

Heaven knows I <b>desperately</b> need the PvP experience. This is just what the doctor ordered; a chance to hone my skills in a long match with respawns allowed.

Like Oriris_72, I am also GMT minus 5 (I'm in the eastern time zone -- I think I got that right), so 8:00 GMT translates to 3 AM for me. I will admit I am a night-owl but would there be any chance of pushing it back to 7:00 or 6:00 GMT, or else cut the duration to one hour, or have two one-hour sessions? Two hours is a grueling marathon, especially that late ("Twilight Zone" indeed, for many of us).

Red Katipo: you helped me out when I first came onto this server. Thanks mate! I haven't forgotten. I took a lesson from it, and passed the favor forward to a few other newbies.

PS: your rules seem pretty solid and well thought-out. I especially like the dumping of bats and bots beforehand. How about this, as well: no missile weapons (except maybe CD's?). I can already see one or two campers hanging back from the main action, firing homing missiles like Nemesis and Cataclysm, and scoring kills without getting their hands dirty while the rest of us hack away at each other melee-style. Missile sniping (spamming?) could spoil some of the fun of testing our true gunnery skills, especially in a free-for-all situation.

  • [27]That is a good start Red....but sorry if I say that I do not like one point: 1) Must start from Isis and sell all bots and bats before taking off.

We propose in CF a good fighting style. All the pilots who enjoy the pvp here like to respect that way and they'll never use batts/nanos during pvp.
So before you start the event you only need to say what the rules are.

That is better especially if you wanna spot pilots who do not listen and explain the fighting matter again.
You will have soon a stat about the players who really wanna have a fair pvp in CF. On the other hand you will not "offend" older pilots who already know the CF pvp way.

That is my opinion of course

To Finisher: no way to hit a target with miss/torps like a sniper (if your target stands still yessss.....) or out of the melee. If you learn that pls tell me :D

I don't know...I never use missiles. But yes, I see your point, missiles are slow as hell (except CD's, but they are like mosquito bites). Maybe "sniping" is a bad word for it, maybe I should call it "taking potshots."

But suppose two or three pilots (or a swarm of pilots) are engaged in dogfighting; couldn't a lurker park his rig and lock on from a distance when one of them gets too close? If a ship is already weakened, one good missile lock would spell "instant frag" -- the damage done by just one of those coalition missiles is tremendous. It wouldn't even require much reflexes or timing -- just a quick lock, or a little luck. I only bring it up because of the tremendous damage potential caused by someone lobbing missiles into the fray.

As I said, I never use missiles, ( not yet, anyway) so don't ask me how to use them, my knowledge of them is next to nothing. (<b>As is my knowledge of PvP.</b> I need practice!)

The missile users probably do not like my suggestion. If my concerns are as unfounded as Tanatos says, I withdraw it wholeheartedly.

As for unloading bots and bats beforehand, I think it's a good idea. This way there will be no "heat of the moment" excuses.

But I also see Tanatos's point: keep it simple.

I like this overall idea though. I hope it becomes official.

  • 08 GTM do you meant morning right? Well, not a bad idea! Im in the same timezone like the serwer, but becouse of my work (Nighclerk) i cannot part the events. But this time is almost perfect to me. :)):D

  • I think removing the Bat/Bot restriction is a good idea, It was one I was not sold on myself. Anyway the only bad thing about dieing is it stops you killing for 30 secs or so while you respawn.

Pushing the time forward does not work for me as I have two young children and I work. The children get my time until around 07:30 GMT. Also 08:00 GMT is 8pm for me but only 5pm for the East Coast of Australia and any earlier would probably rule most of them out.

Starting with a 1 hour event is a good idea as it may help to get more people involved. After all just because the counting stops doesn't mean the fighting has to.

Although I dont use missiles myself I would not like to see them banned from the event as I feel the less rules we have, the more people can come up with their own stratagies etc. I have no problem with people turning up in destroyers or even battleships. After all we can all hear the system chat and if a cap ship is doing too well people can always take it out.

Rather than have to start at the planet we could just start counting kills at 08:00 and stop at 09:00 so people could hide anywhere in the system they want for start up.

Thanks for the good ideas, please keep them coming.

  • I cant see the prob with having no bats /bots as it is already done like this in Top Gun event and I havent heard any complaints :)

  • This is definitely going somewhere.

Any chance of having this bi-weekly, such as Wednesday and Friday, or Wednesday and Saturday? You might get more involvement if there is a weekend event, as work or school schedules will then be less of a factor for many people.

Red Katipo: Thanks for staying involved and continuing to refine and establish the rules. It's looking good to me.

  • Its maybe good idea to circle the time of ewents around.
(08am-08pm) In this way more players are can participate of them.

  • As for more events and/or moving the time around, I think we need to make sure that we can get the first off the ground.

Remember it is easy for us to make suggestiond etc, but the most work still has to be done by OP. For it to be worth trying I feel that we need more players interested than have replyed here so far. I know that I do not always check all the posts on CF all the time and I am sure that is true of other players.

If you have a chance, when you are chatting to players online about the time we have suggested, It could be useful to to mention this thread to them.

OP, do you see any technical difficulties in the suggested event so far. I have assumed that it would be reasonably straight forward to take a frag snapshot at 08:00 and one at 09:00 to work out the winner etc. As a software developer though I know that no code change or inhancement is ever easy. The other thing that would be good to know is what sort of support you would like to see here before you think it is worth setting up a trial.

As far as people cheating and rule enforcemnt goes I see no great problem. The are very few rules so it is hard to cheat. Any dodgy schemes that people come up with can be dealt with by the other players at the time.

Anarchy after all is just trial by public opinion.

  • You will have to have a refereee who will count the kills and ensure the rules are kept and explained.
Please dont expect OP to do the organising ,If you want to make it run then do so:)

  • Thx for that Wavey. As I have not been involved in one of these before I was not quite sure how it would work.

Looks like I might need to sit out from the fighting for the first couple so I can do the organisation.

Hopefully if all goes well I can get some others to take turns with the boring bits.

How does the cash prize work, do I supply that as well?

  • OK, Lets try a trial of this idea this Wednesday 08:00 GMT.

Concept : Free for all PvP in Arena, winner is player with most kills by 09:00. You can die as often as you like so this is different to Top Gun. Winner will get the title "Twilight Serial Killer" + 10M

    RULES :
    1) Any Kills in Arena in this time get counted.
    2) All talk to be in System Chat only.
    3) No using Bats/Bots but you dont have to remove them.
    4) Suicide will take 5 kills off your score.
    5) Start from whever you like

People can use any ships they want.
People can use any weps they want.

    Refereee :
Me. I am more than happy to let someone else do this as the Ref wont have time to compete.

My current concept for scoring is just to manually write down kills from the system chat. If there is a better way please let me know.

If I could grab an excerpt from a log with the details in it I could write a small Perl script to pull out the score automatiically. This would not be ready for this week though.

Let me know ASAP if you have any questions or suggestions.

  • There were 4 of us for the inaugral event. {UAC}Doppleganger outclassed the rest of us with 30 kills.
I was tied for second with Swan on 13 kills each and BG_Sanny was 1 kill behind on 12.

Great fun, but I am glad I made it just 1 hour.

  • Ok...the official results from this weeks "Twilight Madness" PvP match are as follows:

    1st: {UAC}Doppleganger (30 kills) :won:
    2nd Equal: DC_Red_Katipo/Swan (Both on 13 kills)

BG_Sanny was competing for approximately 40 minutes, but had to pull out (with a total of 12 kills).

Congratulations to {UAC}Doppleganger for excellent flying and fighting.

And good fighting to all those who took part.

  • Easiest way to count kills is to use /frags + /frags2 /frags3 in console write down everyones kills then do it again after fight
