Same old problem with Norton

That thread is closed, so I am beginning this new one. I am having the same problem with Norton 360. I have run Crossfire 1.9 often in the past, but now Norton keeps balking at files named cfsetup17.exe and au_.exe, quarantining them and later simply refusing to restore and allow them. Of course, this only happens after the tedious job of deleting/cleaning/restoring/activating all the involved programs. I asked Norton how to allow this but they are coy; they asked for a lot of information and screenshots, including detection logs that I have no idea what are (MD5/SHA256).

My question is simple: how do I force Norton 360 to allow these files to execute? I have tried manually clicking the freelancer.exe file before executing it and allowing it, but it doesn't seem to be the problem. Sometime after the initial update of 226 files, when I click to start SP game, this cfsetup17.exe and au_.exe appear and are blocked.

I have gone through the laborious steps to try again about ten times now and am about ready to just wait for CF 2.0 ... but I bet Norton won't like it, either.

    Thanks.

  • well, if AV do only what he want without allow user to do his own setting (admin mode), then is imo good question if is worth use such AV.

  • Yeah, I used to pick my own intrusion and AV software from the many available free ones, but my cable TV outfit (Comcast) gives Norton as a perk, so I started using it. It's like Kristofferson said, "Nothing ain't worth nothing, but it's free."

  • Reviving this thread (maybe offtopic, maybe not). Avast's file system screen suspends Freelancer.exe as Win32:Evo-gen (susp), scanning quarantined file shows nothing. Though Avast does slap this on for most .exe (learned that it does that to programming utilities and game executables), and I've already set executables as a global exceptions, but I'd like a confirmation (besides, Avast never did that before) that nothing dangerous has slipped with this update.

"Across the savage skies and through the fissures in the fields,
The rumble of the engines and the trundle of the wheels,
Through hell and horror trudge and yet their spirits never yield.
Will they sing of these forsaken pawns of war?"
-Miracle Of Sound, "Pawns of War".

  • best is to report false positives to norton then

Sorry for not answering earlier - somehow missed this thread :S

I'll try to describe how I've "convinced" Norton 360 to ignore CF-stuff.
Unfortunatly I haven't got the "trick" by now how to make the proper screenshots. Therefor only words. Also I only have a "german version" (part of an "all-inclusive-package"). I'll try to translate and describe.

Open the Norton menu, go to "SETTINGS" (the 2nd from left in upper task bar).

FIRST STEP : the ANTIVIRUS-settings(the first on the left list).
Open the "folder" : "Scans and Risks" (the middle one).
From the "main" (fat printed) categories scroll down to : "Exeptions/low risks" (in my list the 6th FAT one).
The 2nd, 3rd and 4th thin subcategories should have an "configure" option right to them.
On the 2nd subcategorie : for ignoring I've added and marked
    - D:\ Lager\Games\FREELANCER\MODS\Crossfire\Neuer Ordner\Crossfire19.exe
(I stored the downloaded .exe file not on my main drive but on my DataDump, therefor : D:\ ))
    - C:\Program files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\EXE\Freelancer.exe
    - C:\Program files (x86)\Freelancer Mod Manager\FL ModManager.exe
And only for being "complete" and forego any possible probs I also included
    - C:\Program files (x86)\FL SaveEditor\FL SaveEditor.exe
    - C:\Program files (x86)\Freelancer Account Manager\fam.exe
    On the 3rd subcategorie : for ignoring by "Auto-Protect", "SONAR",and "Download-Insight" I've marked
    - C:\Program files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\EXE\Freelancer.exe
On the last Categorie : "Insight-Protect"
    I set it to "disabled"

    NEXT STEP : the FIREWALL
Open the 2nd folder from left "Program rules"
    There I've added :
    - C:\Program files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\EXE\Freelancer.exe
    - D:\ Lager\Games\FREELANCER\MODS\Crossfire\Neuer Ordner\Crossfire19.exe
    - C:\Program files (x86)\Freelancer Mod Manager\FL ModManager.exe

All these settings are still active and I keep them (never change a winning team ;) )

As you didn't come back you might have solved you probs already by yourself.
Otherwise : Hope it helps (perhaps others with the same prob as well. :)

PS : Sry, if it's not very "eyefriendly". I'm abit in a hurry. Will come back for some editing..

PPS : Slowly I got the impression, we need a "special" or stickyed "NORTON 360" thread or category. ^^

edit : I hope this big chunk of text "catchs" your eyes now a bit bettes.

Edited once, last by NucNuc: edit for the eyes ().

  • Here is an update. I used the info from NucNuc to force Norton to allow the files. It allowed me to install and run Crossfire 1.9.

Unfortunately, I found that my PC doesn't have the horsepower to handle the far better graphics. I have a lousy on-board Geforce 6150SE chip set and it is too feeble. No doubt CF 2.0 will be even more graphics hungry, so it looks like I need a new PC.

Always nice to have an excuse to upgrade.

  • Great I could help.

About the graphics : try to lower the load for your on-board graphic
in the "options", i.e. put the "partikels" lower, change the nebula stuff.
    That might help -

    until you are "upgraded" :D
(just for getting a "taste" for what comes after that ;)
