Graphical / Interface problem

  • Hi - I've been installing/activating/uninstalling, etc for a week and trying different activation settings.

Problem occurs exactly the same in both SP and MP - same problem every time.
My system: AMD Athlon 1.7GHz, Windows 2000. 256MB Invidia GeForce 6200. (FLMM 1.31 and Crossfire 1.9)

Fresh install of FL each time, save folders deleted, files are not marked read-only. I've followed installation and activation instructions. (No error messages during installation or activation. Anti-virus deactivated.)
Once everything is installed & activated, I go through the patching and start Crossfire SP. The Crossfire Menu displays correctly and the cut-scenes to begin also run fine.

    Problems:
    1. All my menu's (or drop-downs... F1, Settings, Nav map, Inventory, Rep, Info, Bar, Equipment, etc) have NO border or background. The text is displayed over the top of the active screen graphics.
    2. Once I launch my ship - everything is BLACK. I have a white glow that marks the sun's position, and sometimes small color flecks of a ship/station. Its like my screen is using very dark sunglasses. BUT - If I select "Rear View" or "Turret View" then the screen display is normal - I see everything properly. [ I have screenshots ]

I'm working my way through all the different activation settings related to Graphics. Any suggestions to stop this happening???
    Thanks and regards
    Tarmor

UPDATE: I've tried changing the Interface Colours, all Adv Shader options, and the compat Old Graphics Cards. No changes to what occurs. I'm going to try Shift+F12 with Adv shaders, and I'm downloading the Mod again in case my copy is corrupted or missing something. (I had already checked that I have the latest update for my Graphics card.) Thanks for the suggestions!

  • Looks like certain file of the new CF 1.9 board (or it's animation) is missing, try using another option for menus, like red/blue (looks good and might fix this), if you wish to keep this same menu view, or choosing another does the same visual bug, you'll have to redownload the mod.

If redownloading doesn't work, try searching on the internet for the latest (non beta) driver for your graphic card.

You can also try using the "Low Graph Card Compatibility" even it says it's for 128 Mb and lower, there are other cases which can't hold as much as they should.

  • Hello Tarmor,

welcome here. I want ask: have you active advanced shaders? If yes then which one (3 active settings)? Try use in space shift+F12 ... better? This can be changed as default --> check for enbseries.ini and there search for [GLOBAL] UseEffect=1 ... insert there 0.

  • I resolved my "menus problem" - if I exited FL, started again and loaded a save game everything appeared correctly.
    But I still can't play...
I downloaded the Mod again - same problems. I've been through every different graphics activation I can try.
I've even downloaded CF 1.8 and that was worse - it played the "intro" videos and then dumped me at desktop with an error. Didn't even get to a menu.

Thanks for the advice Michael & Martind, but I've spent 2 weeks on this getting no-where and I'm giving up. I'll go back to standard FL and other games.
    Please close the thread.

  • I assume you are both referring to the "Interface" activation options for the HUD. As stated in my first post I've tried this. I made attempts with CF Gold, Original Freelancer Blue and Blue/Red. Blue/Red looks great! (Once I got the menus working) But I still had my "black screen".
I'm not running an OS from XP to Win7. I'll make another attempt if I get some suggestions that sound like they might have an effect. (Anyone running Win 2000 with CF 1.9 ?)

  • I have an old crappy Dell laptop that I sometimes used to play CF 1.8 and it worked fine [running Windows 2000 Pro] but when I tried to run CF 1.9, I had the same problem as you...menu borders missing and no textures [black screen] . I also tried everything to make it work. Windows 2000 was never very good for playing 3D games because of video driver issues. Microsoft designed Win2000 for it's corporate business customers, not home users/gamers. I learned this back in the days of 3Dfx Voodoo video cards. Switching to XP will fix your problem. Here's the specs of this old Dell, just to show it's not the computer or CF that is the problem:

    Dell Latitude C400
    PIII - 1.2 GHz
    512 MB Ram
Intel Extreme[ly crappy] Graphics - 64 MB shared
    20 MB HD
Used to run Win2k, now running XP

I have to turn the graphics detail all the way down to nothing and turn off all enhancements but it does play. If you cannot or will not run XP, then there is no solution to your problem.

Side Note: After switching to XP, I found things run better and a bit faster than when I had Win2k. Also, my XP is Service Pack 2 and I did NOT upgrade to SP3. Not sure if that made any difference.

  • sp2 or 3 doesn't affect gameplay much, it makes XP work with more stuff.

But indeed XP is the top efficient windows, uses very little, keeping it clean you can make it use only 70-80 Mb of your RAM in total, where if you get Vista to use less than 800 you are a lucky (I did, but it was a bit ugly xD). Windows 7 is another story(due to it's a mix of Vista and XP), but not an option for lower end PCs either. There are tools which closes the less important stuff at your windows xp, but nothing better than a manual control(if you know how).
