remove the old savegames
maybe you should try the lower the texture quality or deactivate shaders (in the activation options)
when does it crash - if you launch to space? did you activated it properly by flmm without errors, did the launcher update everything? Atm i have no clue hence all this questions 
if you start crossfire - there is a small dialog that contains some info about the mod, links, the asf/csf groups and in the lower section tells something about files that are downloaded. Thats the launcher - once it has finished you can join multiplayer - although you can start singleplayer instantly - maybe you just have to get through one update process (just a guess).
yeah, if you start FL - does it (FL) just start or are you getting an extra popup window with an download function? Could be that you missed something if you dont get this screen...
get a small loading window then the game just starts, as it always had 
edit - the game is unpatched btw, could that have something todo with it?
dunno what you do wrong but for me it seems you are not following the install instructions properly. The downloaded file does not install crossfire as game itself - it just installs the mod to the flmm directory. So if you start FLMM you see the crossfire mod in the list. Then you have to choose this the crossfire client version 1.82 and wait until its activated (the dialog may freez but you should wait till its finished). The activation put the content from the mod folder to your freelancer installation and a few more internal things so just copying wont activate the mod and later could cause server crashes.

After all this is done and you start your freelancer.exe the window above should appear.
then a mod is already installed
Just close your eyes, forget everything what you think you know, then follow instructions, word by word, sentence by sentence and for sure you will succeed!
