I see what you mean, but in that case you need more than 6 matches... and would make 7 triangles (counting the base one)
So that is not what I had in mind -

You didn't said about "no tricks" by purpose ? or just forgot... breaking the matches in 2, making a smaller concentrated crystal form... would be a trick

this one is a classic :
you got 2 containers, one 5L the other 3L. To achieve your objective, you need to precisely fill a recipient tank with 4L of water.... how do you do that ?
You can fill, empty and tranfer water in both of the containers (excess water remains in the original container in case of trasnfering 5 into 3...) !

EDIT: For oyur classic, it's easy for who knows
Fill the 3L bottle and pour it into the empty 5L bottle then fill the 3L bottle again, and pour enough to fill 5L bottle. This leaves exactly 1 liter in the 3L bottle.
Empty the 5L bottle, pour the remaining 1 liter from the 3L bottle into the 5L bottle. Fill the 3L bottle and pour it into the 5L bottle.The 5L bottle now has exactly 4 liters !!
