Greetings and first MP experience

  • Greetings to all,

Although this is my first post, I have been wandering around for a while now.
I have been a crossfire player since I first heard of crossfire 1.7, but being a SP player only,
I never really felt comfortable to introduce myself here seeing there are mainly MP players, knowing i'd never see them online
(which is a pretty lame excuse I must admit LOL).

Still, there is something unforgivable I have done, that I must see repared:
I just wanted to deeply thank SWAT_OP-R8R for coming up with this magnificent freelancer mod.
I remember reading on the boards the troubles he came up building Crossfire 1.8, seeming desperate at times,
even on the verge of giving up at others, feeling lonely, and the fear of spending years of work for a lost cause
(unless I have read the boards wrong?)
But you did not give up... and the result is just incredible (and I trully hope you find yourself it was worthy in the end).

Now it seems to me I do have to say a (edit: errr... a long long long) word about myself (but you can skip if bored! ;) )

I have been playing Crossfire in SP mode since 2006, enjoying the exploration and the challenge (even if by then, it
meant "cursing at my computer"). I am not a very good player with only basic technic combat skills, but still the vanilla game
campain was ended shortly and i quickly found myself turning in cercles afterwards. Wandering on the net a while after, I came upon
this "Crossfire mod" and decided to give it a try in Open SP to see if it could raise up my interest into Freelancer.
    It was hard!
I was expecting challenge, but the NPCs shield and hull regeneration rate seemed too much for me at first. Everything was expensive, and doing missions
to gain credits took hours, even if I eventually found out prisons helped a lot in the process. I trully wondered how I could progress enough to be tough enough
to dare venture new areas. I searched for a decent ship for a low level, wondering where all those new ships were hidden! Most of the ones I found cost hell and had
level restrictions. I ended up laying my hand on a Walkyrie (those where in my range), somehow a bit disapointed: Would I ever get something new?
I did not give up though, and missions were doable now at least (even if it still took me a long time to face 3-4 NPCs).Slowly I gathered upgrades from all over vanilla areas,
and thought it was time for me to start fully enjoying this mod. I started the quests, and I must admit I had fun trying to find clues while exploring new systems. I eventually ended
up trying a whole bunch of new starships, landing on Earth (very exciting moment!), losing myself in the numerous nomad words, saying a quick "Hi" to DKs (not daring going too far though), and last but not least, merging back to the Starlancer environment (I still play that game too!), which i think is a great way to honor it! To my opinion, the vanilla game lacked references to Starlancer even though it was supposed to be the sequel (just a vague allusion during the intro).

After months of exploring (always with wide eyes!), I come across a different problem. I still have many areas to discover, but I feel I have reached what I can reasonably do by myself,
and come to a fatal conclusion: either I am not skilled enough, either my equipment is too limited (even though I picked up all I could find, going from the lvl10 shield to DKa guns), but I keep dying trying to go deeper into new spaces.
This is why i am now considering trying to play MP (even if it means starting all over again). I have made a few shots but my ping isn't really great (around 140), and the lag makes it hard.
But... I am not giving up...
So hopefully, maybe I'll finally get the chance to meet you all some time, at the corner of a bar...

    Till then, fly straight!
    <bow>

P-S: Thank you again SWAT_OP-R8R for the joy you brought and still bring to me playing Freelancer!

P-P-S: Sorry for that long thread!

  • Grrrrrr.... I get blabling... and I almost forgot SWAT_OP-R8R was not the only one to put time and effort
    into building Crossfire! 8|

Unfortunately, I am unable to make a full list of everyone (specially I surely do not know everyone!) between the development team (SWAT team?),
the web site team, and everyone who got involved into making and maintening this mod and community running.
I can only hope they will recognize themselves, and accept my thanks as well (and forgive me for my forgetness!)

  • Bienvenue Faaby !

You truly have the CF spirit :) Trying and failing then trying harder then doing quests then having a hard time again, but its all ok cause this mod is the hardest one.... By small bits, step by step, you managed to build up a char and explore the universe. Now you feel the need for help to push further your explorations and the CF community will certainly respond and give you the support you need.

You won't dislike your MP experience, i guarantee !

Oh and great to have another lady around ;)

  • Hi Faaby,

you are right with your observation that i went through pretty hard times but guess what... players which like my work and write down their story, their experience... such players are worth it and that is what motivates me to go on. I have to thank you for the time you have spend to share your experiences with us. Id love to see more players doing something similar because that shows me that we are all part of a phantastic open community dedicated to a few incredible games that we love to play (no matter if we play them in singleplayer or multiplayer).

I know that my mod can be pretty hard from time to time, yes. Thats how i like it to be and thats how most players like it to be. In some areas it is maybe a bit too hard. As you have met the DKs and probably even visited their systems you have seen the hardest of the hardest opponents. Thats very good. You must be a good player facing them. Joining the multiplayer is for sure worth it because you can learn how to fight even better and playing with others is even more fun as there are very cool personalities on the server.

Id really love to read more about your experiences with Crossfire. Thx

Only dead fish swim with the stream.
Don't discuss with idiots. They only drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience there.

    This is ten percent luck,
    Twenty percent skill,
Fifteen percent concentrated power of will,
    Five percent pleasure,
    Fifty percent pain,
And a hundred percent reason to remember the name!

  • Hey Faby,

you have written a brilliant abstract of your experience. I enjoyed it.
If you would need help in game you can surely contact any player there (especially the clan tagged players). They most know how to get along with the mod, the NPCs, how to earn money and getting advanced equipment of all kinds. Please dont make the error not to contact them.

I wish you much luck and joy to proceed with this mod.

    Regards

  • Brilliant Post Faaby , I really enjoyed it.. and if you ever think of joining the MP, don't be afraid to ask for any assistance you may need ;] (I hope to see ya in MP soon anyway , if you wanna become much much better, the Multiplayer is the way^^)

  • Thank you all for your warm welcome :)

I have reinstalled Freelancer on the computer with the main internet connection, and playing online seems now opened to me.
I think i'll be spending some time to redo my in-game map while making some experience.
It will probably take me a while to get set for deep exploring, but there is no hurry, right? :)

I am looking forward to see you all around in any case

  • Faaby...we all have had similar experiences playing CF, but you decided to share yours, thanx.

You also reminded me that CF is not just a game but a community, made up of great players, ideas, and good old fashioned fun.

Deep down these guys want to kill your ass, and leave you to die in the Nomad wasteland, but they also want you to succeed.

I myself have never tried MP, but as soon as my new computer is done ($$$ issues) I will definitely join you.

Maybe we can start our own clan, called "The Orbs of Barbie" and get fashion tips from Spiky. :bmuhahaha:

  • Faaby, might i invite you to post your story on the Crossfire facebook page ?

Check my sig for the link ! And look in the discussions boards there should be a ncie place for you to write your stories !

  • SA_ARROW, I will check on that,
maybe I can do something a little more evolved and detailed, but I do not mind, if you think it might interest some people :)

P-S: I am bit puzzled by the online leveling system: is it based on money (I seem to lose levels when buying things), or kills (same when I die), or a mix?

  • its a mix, its the total worth of your char (equipment + ship + money) althought when you buy something (example : 10M), it loses value (down to 6M). Owning an object transform your dear money in "used-equipment" which is worth less (4M)... this then makes your level go down a little. I also think that MP rankings give more importance to the money part and a little less to the equipment value...

EDIT/ADDITION : I always wanted to create a troop of space show* pilots :) The pink eagle would make a nice "standard ship" for this thing.... Making figures in space for others to see with the pink eagles would be amazing !

*space show : just like an air show but in space ^^

  • P-S: I am bit puzzled by the online leveling system: is it based on money (I seem to lose levels when buying things), or kills (same when I die), or a mix?

No, it's Not a mix between kills and base money, it's all about how much your ship worth, including your bank ammount :D Arrow got a bit confused explaining the 'mix'.

  • oh she said about kills ? sry i read to fast ^^^My post never talks of the kills so i'm a little unclear, sorry Faaby !

True, kills have no effect in the levels...

  • Thank you gentlemen for your precious help :)

Things are clearer now, and I know where I am going now (more precisely: I know where I am NOT going to go! - just yet :D )
