Let's Play Freelancer: Crossfire! (Not an ad but request for some advice!)

  • Hey everyone! Just registered on the forums because I recently picked up Crossfire. I haven't played Freelancer since it first came out but this mod inspired me to add it to my "Let's Play" line-up on youtube (not going to advertise the link out of respect, if you want to find my channel just search 'reymasofashborne'). A big thanks to SWAT for making this mod, it is overall very impressive!

However, after my first set, which is uploading now, I wanted to ask about the difficulty. I know it is indeed 'not for sissies' but I do have some gripes. Even in the first escort mission with King I am getting obliterated, which is not all that much fun for an LP audience to watch. I am playing the single-player campaign for the LP, not logging into the server, incidentally. I get that the enemies are smarter and more cunning, but the fact that they simply have an ungodly amount of health compared to me is a bit unbalanced, imo. The AI is far superior but that would be more than enough to make the game more challenging.

Also, I am seeing ships able to barrel roll and maneuver in ways that I do not have controls for (rotate clockwise etc are not working for me) so do I need some sort of upgraded thrusters to be able to roll or is that something AI can do and players cannot?
Lastly, for the entertainment of my LP audience as I said (so it's just not me trying to whittle away at an enemy's shields and then dying over and over, hopelessly outgunned), is there a way to adjust the difficulty, in the INI perhaps? Not the AI, they are awesome, but simply the buffs that all the enemy ships seem to have that make them virtually impenetrable?

I could be wrong and after the first mission it tapers off a bit, but man those rogues were ROUGH TRADE!
Also, I could just be missing some functionality completely that would help me get the better of my opponents. Any advice would be helpful!

  • If you ever read Trent's log, you'd notice how after every battle he's all like: I almost died.
Be an awesome pilot, do your best, equip yourself to the max before each mission, and, like Trent, you'll prevail.

In short: shoot, evade, afterburn, reverse, stop to buy equips -- Repeat.

    I've been here since Crossfire 1.5 - 2005.
    Good times.
Maybe it's time to come back?

  • Yes, there are good equipment in the game which makes the NPCs you know veery easy ^^ Still there are very hard npcs somewhere arround outerspace, (outside Sirius :D ) where aliens are pretty hard for the best equipment :D It maks the game more intensive and with more entertainment :D

  • Look at the key map, there are commands tp role but they are not mapped to any key from the beginning.

  • Yeah I mapped the rotate commands to Q and E but they don't seem to work...are those not the commands I'm looking for?

  • Welcome Reymas...If you played FL before it's a game of luck and patience, and mostly Exploration.

Hooking up with this forum was the best thing I did, it provided a lot of info and answers to my stupid questions.

FL with CF 1.81 is awesome, simply because it's massive...and full of new stuff to discover , use, and rip your hair out over.

Keep playing...it's always difficult at first...so much info to absorb...

Get stuck, then toss a question or two onto this forum, and don't forget to enjoy!!!

Tip: make some money first before you take on anymore missions, so you can buy better equipment...Juni will wait or else she'll get the famous foot massage with feather treatment. ;)

  • Ha, yeah, good advice! I played it when it first came out but I don't remember it being nearly this tough! Awesome, awesome mod though, all around. I bitch about it a little in my first LP set (which is up now at http://www.youtube.com/user/ReymasofAshborne - hope you guys will check it out) but that's cuz I am just not prepared for how hard it is and severely out-of-practice!

My next task in the LP is to go bounty hunting for level 1 baddies and try to make enough money to buy a new ship.

  • 1. rolling is possible in this mod (it was included since the original game didnt support it aswell as vertical stafing)
    2. good job on the fov adjustments (since i dont have widescreen i didnt include such a feature and kept the original resolutions -> everything else just would have been guessing)
    3. if you would have visited the weapon dealer before you launched to the first mission it would have been easier for you (its always best to get the best ships and weapons if you have the money)
    4. wait until you leave the liberty systems so you can see the really interesting stuff
    5. you are right the graphics are better but not comparable with modern games -> reason is that FL still runs with DirectX8 and all its limitations (with at least dx9 i could create real eye candy)
    6. could it be that your dog wanted to go for a walk?

Don't discuss with idiots. They only drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience there.

  • Ahoy Reymas, the helicopter is barely to hear - so don't matter we all could hear you :)
I find it very amazing if people comment what they are playing - like you did. There are several of such videos around about a variety of games. Thats OK - but me wouldn't do any of this - hehe. But i find your comments funny.

At the very first start the game seems to be a bit hard - but with proper weapons its manageable. And with the first pilots that you tractor in and sell at the prison (next one from NY is in Texas) you soon will have enough money to get even better weapons. Its challenging for sure - so it should not be boring.

Ship rotating is not very useful in fights as it only works if you are not in free flight mode. But drifting left, right, up or down will do the trick nearly the same way.
Keep on going - you definitely should have a look to the others different sectors than Sirius. They are even more challenging and have much interesting stuff to offer - also some more cruel Aliens. Hehe - in MP game you could line up with some other players to get those NPCs struggling^^

  • Those damn liberty rogues...I remember when I first started I was killed with extreme prejudice...

All this does is make you mad...you get a mean on and vow to destroy all enemies including their families.

Let me tell you Reymas that this will not be the only time you'll get angry, there are things out there in space that will bitchslap you all over the place.

Best advice I got from these forum guru's was make money to buy better gear and to use bribes when possible.
