Patch for offline updates

  • Would it be possible to have an offline patch to update Crossfire 2.0 (both luncher and game)?
To play in single player it'd be great, for computer that can't connect all the time or for people that travels a lot xD

Greetings, you need (is recommended) update your game right after installation 1! time (bigger amount of updates). All next updates (less as 10 files) are related to market file changes and therefore are not really needed for SP. Hope this info can help.

  • Totally unnecessary m8 ... You can be disconnected anytime and you can launch SP ... you have the choice not to update and play SP ...if you can't connect for some time you can play SP

The game and the launcher can patch and update anytime you go back online

if there was a patch as you say you would still need to go online download then install ... which is what happens automatically and the choice is still yours if you want the update as far as SP

MP auto updates because it is totally required every time because of the dynamic economy.

I played CF SP for a long time before going on line for MP ... whenever a new version came out I downloaded it and replaced the older version and played it again from the start. :) :) :)

Anyway if I have missed something maybe OP or one of the Moderators can give a more detailed explanation.....!

iT's Good to meet you PPPPPP .... enjoy the Game SP or MP both are great.

  • Thanks for the welcome and for the replies! =)

No what I meant was bit different...
If there are updates there must be a reason =P, so better update the game!
And yes, you still need internet to download the patch... but waht I was wondering is this: I put all I need on a USB driver (game, mod manager, mod.. and eventually the patch, including all the updates until today) so I download everything just once (except future minor updates of course, but still I'd already have the 470+ updates available now). And everytime I need to format, change computer, travel to different location, I just need a backup of the savegames. Otherwise everytime new installation means new downloading.. and what if ( I really hope not, cause what you guys have done it's simple incredible - I mean, a mod much bigger of the game itself, lasting for more than 10 years!!!) the servers goes down? HOw to update then??

This would be cool no?? ;)

One more thing, but maybe it's better I open a new thread for this....
It's very long time I don't play games on computer, indeed about now I just struggle to play old-but-everlasting games (like Freelancer xP) on my MacBook (always some issues though). So I don't know mutch about Shaders...
Could someone help me to understand how they works (just activate them on the mod launcher or need external software like SweetFX Shader Suite?) and wich, in order on the list, is better? (more detailed, more postprocessing...)
I guess SweetFx is the best, but so fare I couldn't make it work (maybe just graphic equipment too low or something wrong or missing in the virtual machine).

    Thanks again

  • Currently there are two update servers for the mod just for the case one has technical problems. As long this community is running there always will be an update server.

Shaders depend highly on your Hardware. You will have to test what works best for you. All u need to do is to change the launcher options.

yeah that's what I meant.... if one day the the community will be down would be nice to keep play an uptodate copy of crossfire... at least everything won't be "lost"!

about the shaders I've done some research myself. If I'm not wrong the lancher load the shaders with some preset (maybe, at least for sweetfx, I saw the files on the EXE directory so maybe can edit those, or the launcher just accept those presets?).
Anyway I thought shaders affect more heavily the graphic ( particle effects, smoke...) instead they make some adjustements of contrast, color, blur effects right?

One last thing, the savegames are compatible with the original game or other installation of Crossfire? Or they will result as corrupted?
If one day I install everything on another machine and make some changes in the mod activation options, could I import actual savegames?

    EDIT:
Almost forgot.. Everytime I lunch the SP it notices me that there's new update (even if I just finished updateing and restart the luncher), if I click yes it just gets stuck on "Starting update". Is this normal?

Vanilla FL saves maybe can be compatibille till last mission. Still I will recommend play from start.

You can import/copy saves as you want, it's not problem share these files between PCs.

SP updates are normal, if you use this, it updates commodities market files so they are the same like on server and MP.

  • The community wont go offline anytime soon. The is no real risk for that.
Therefore you will always be able to update.

Vanilla savegames are compatible with Crossfire.
However Crossfire savegames are not compatible with vanilla FL.
CF1.9 savegames are compatible with CF2.0 but CF2.0 savegames are not compatible with CF1.9.

Shaders definy in which way geometry and textures are rendered. There are two kinds of shaders... the ones which are directly used by the graphics engine and post processing shaders which can be used on top of that.
Post processing shaders improve the image quality without directly having access to the render engine, the geometry and the textures.
We can only use these post processing shader since we have no direct access to the Freelancer graphic engine.

  • Thanks for the really detailed reply! awsome!
So now I have only one doubt:
should I play with Vanilla FL the storyline (so any time I can use the savegames in future with vanilla or other mods than crossfire) or start Crossfire from the beginning for I can enjoy the improvements?? xD

  • That is something i let the players answer

... imo it's worth replay vanilla with CF mod, I replayed whole campaign countless of times during beta-testing and still enjoyed improvements done to vanilla part. And cut-scenes with much better graphic on full screen are very nice too. You can look here for some screenshots from campaign and this is not even the nicest graphic setting used there which I had available later (once upgraded my gaming PC).
