Greetings, anyone know of any problems between CF and the new OS Windows Vista? I ask because some of the games I have played kick me due to the incompatible OS. Apparently Punkbuster does not like new Operating Systems. I am almost tempted to return to XP.

well, I really don't believe in new OS, i took 2 years to give up of Windows 2000, allways wait for the fist or second service pack.
but I don't know if that will solve any problem about these games, after all is not really what the market wants.
-
Wish I could wait, unfortunately my job requires me to get up to speed on the new OS. I was mainly wondering if anyone had heard of problems with any games not working with Vista.
Thanks Argos (personally I love Xp)

Isn't Vista more advanced than XP? Go to your CF directory and go to properties, compatibility, and then set it for "XP" and everything should be peachy (if it doesn't show the option for the folder then try the .exe file)

So far I have had no problems with CF, other than a lag issue that i attribute to the new OS. I do not know what type of software OP runs to keep out the hackers and cheaters though. Punkbuster is fairly common and that is what threw me out of Battlefield 2142.

solution: use both OS on the same machine

<-- happy windows 2000 user

You know sometimes its the simplest solutions that work the best, thanks OP. I did a dual install. I will just drop back down to XP while gaming LOL. I am still curious how many games will not be compatable with Vista though.
-
Most are compatible, even on RC versions and beta drivers for Vista.

Vista is a 64bit edition where XP is a 32.
If I am correct, Freelancer is only 16 bit was created before XP came out; so anything played on XP or Vista has to be "backward" compatable.
Biggest trick to playing is probably the RAM capacity. But I don't think a 16bit based game is going to put alot of stress on a 32 or 64 bit processor. Even less a super video card.
It's usually the background programs that are running at the same time which are causing the issues.
(detectors, updaters, anti spyware and some anti virus programs.)
Im not saying to turn off your anti virus program though.
In a recent lag incident, I noticed after the fact that my windows updater had been working in the background. I only found this out when I began to shut my pc down and got the screen notice that updates were waiting to be installed. -
if i'm correct FL comeout on 2003.
WinXP comeout on 2001
-
If that is true...then I am definately wrong about my dates. My apologies.
But, is Freelancer a 16 bit or 32 bit game? I could be wrong about that too then.Anyway...background progams seem to be the culprit in causing lag. (on my pc anyway.)
-
Freelancer has to be a 32 bit game. The last 16 bit OS was Win95.
-
Vista is available in 32 bit or 64 bit editions.
-
if you have a 64 bit processor pls go for the 64 bit version and use a dual boot option one boot with xp one with xp64 or vista64 cause some stuff doesn't work or still needs to get converted or work not that well and i know where i speak off btw anyone with hardware or software problems can allways pm me then i'll try to help where i can (i repair pc's and study for pc engineer atm )
-
I've always wondered what is the usefulness of a dual boot option.
What is it for? -
You can have the newest OS for nice features, and the older one for compatability. This way, all your programmes will work one way or another and you'll have all new features if you're in your new OS.

Well I Dual-boot my system, I currently have 32bit XP and 64bit Vista Ultimate installed on my system. Most of the problems I've encountered in Vista already have a fix, you just have to wait for the final release to get them...I've been running everything I can get my hands on and sending error reports to Microsoft if it goes wrong. I tried Freelancer on vista and used XP compatibility..didn't have a problem. The only big problem people will have with Vista is DRM. I have a Friend who works for Microsoft, and he said it's the worst thing they put into it...other than that, I've been happy with it, looks wonderful, runs soooo smooth...and to be honest, seeing the power of my dual-core 64bit processor actually at work was a joy to behold...means I didn't spend that money for nothing.

Windows Vista is build with the idea of multi-processing and should know better how to use more than one processors/cores and benefit. On the other hand you have much bigger OS, require more resources so things might run slower and require better hardware.

Hey guys,
CF runs fine under Vista, at least it does for me.
Have fun,
