Bye Bye Miss 1.57

Type of my memories of 1.57, you ask? Lol, where would I start? Instead of typing out a kilometer-long string of words describing my memories, I will instead slap a slightly smaller patty of spam on your monitors

A priest walks across a meadow and faces a throng of assembled mourners; there is a casket nearby. Yep, it's time for a 1.57 eulogy. The holy man clears his throat, and then addresses the assembly. Crossfire, he begins, was a good mod, really. He was older, more sophisticated than his late brother, 1.56, yet wiser than his younger cousin, 1.6. I only discovered the mod a few weeks ago, he cedes, but it was most definitely the best I had ever played. From the new ships, to the added systems, to all those awesome equipment upgrades, it was simply all good.

So, too, were many other things about him. The RP was spectacular, the atmosphere casual, lag wasn't nearly as bad as any of us first expected it to be, and there was a SP-officer at every corner...well, sort ofI never recalled there being any sidewalks on him, now that I think about it. All in all, he stresses, this mod served the players well, and will be remembered with warmth and kindness. But now we must move on and embrace the future. Farewell, I say to the old mod, for it's time has come. If there is a cyberspace heaven out there somewhere for old and deserted programs, 1.57 is about to embark on the brief journey to it. If all goes well our good, gracious Lord, OP the R8R, won't leave it in his Recycle Bin for too long before deleting it. Bless you, little mod, you will be missed. Turning from the crowd, the priest faces casket and sprinkles it with holy water. While anxious gamers begin to cry, a gangly lot of Xeno prisoners begin to bury the coffin. Well, the priest shouts, tone completely changed, lets go! 1.6 is coming to town and were throwing a ticker-tape parade for him in half an hour!

There was much rejoicing, and..well, you get the idea (if the picture isn't enough, then listen to a patriotic song from your patron nation at the same time).

Don`t say it has end, until the fat lady has sung...

Well, for CF 1.57 is. SERVER IS DOWN so that mean they will be start testing soon

Well, what can i say.. i will be sincere, i won't miss 1.57, but, it's an special mod, a true mark in my online alter-ego life. I will miss the DAYS of 1.57, and let's make shure that it doesn't fall in the hands of pirate servers!

Riddick leading me out of Altair,
I had a new char and no maps, I got totally turned around at the end of the run. Riddick led me home like the true M8 he seems to be. We arrived at the Omicrons and the Corsairs (I think) swarmed at me like fury (I was a Corsair harvester at that time). He couldnt help as he had to stay good with them. Shit, Shit ,oh no, Shit ! from Riddick on the chat panel as I dodged and weaved and ran like a rabbit. HE HE. A great time.

as 1.56 did not die with the comming of 1.57... so shall 1.57 not die with the comming of 1.6. it will always be remembered as we embark on our journey into 1.6 as we enter altair and remember where it all began, and where 1.6 found its starting part. As 1.57 was the predacessor to 1.6, 1.6 itself too will be a predacessor to something greater. in order to be a great thing one must never forget his past, and we too wont forget the great things of 1.56 and 1.57 that made 1.6 what it is. 1.56 and 1.57 our hats go off to you... 1.6 here is the ribbon and the silver shears, we welcome your arrival.

I like to think of the coming of this mod like a sort of disgruntled workers' revolution. This pic illustrates this feeling. Listen to "Let's Go" if it helps you imagine it.

If 1.57 isn't dead yet, it's about to be bludgeoned, tied to the back of a horse-drawn wagon, and dragged through the streets by 1.6. (No offense intended )

it wont ever die, it will live on as a memory. and im sure it will live on stored on someones hdd, maybe not installed but sitting there waiting to be called on when needed (i.e. me b/c i have a storage harddrive that has downloads dating back to 1998, im somewhat of a pack rat when it comes to downloads).

This I am as well. Of course 1.57 will live on, just not physically on this server. The revolution post still applies, for not all of those who are outed are lost. It's all about perspective. Let's make a compromise. Can we settle on 1.57 having been put into a hospital on a permenent basis? It's still alive, it's just not running any more marathons.

Well as much as I am anticipating CF 1.6 I bid fond adieu to 1.57. For it was in Crossfire 1.57 that I finally got with the program and figured out what multiplayer is all about. Clans, chat, pvp, all that cool stuff you can't do by yourself-unless you're schizophrenic.
Being a graphic designer by training and trade, I kept a runing photo album of sorts as I made my journey into the realm of multiplayer and through the wonderful world of Crossfire. So it is with your induldgence that I open my virtual scrapbook, and share these Crossfire memories (sniff) with my mates.

This first one is of my clan buddy (IOC) Argos, who escorted me through Altair.

And these two screenshots represent something all of us have done. Trading in Custodian to level up to a bada$$ fighter.

One of the cool things about Crossfire is the new bases. Some of these bases have rather....odd docking properties. Docking at Outpost Delta can take as little as 10 seconds or as long as 3 minutes depending on which butt cheek you're leaning on. (Balance is the key!) On one particlularly long docking sequence, I decided to sit back, have a beer and watch the show. Took some pictures too. Here are a few..

Of course, no mod is a success without the vigilence of dedicated people to guard it from cheaters, thugs, ruffians, and Methodists. Gunny put in countless hours standing guard so we could have fun blowing each other up. Herea are a couple of shots showing our resident Headmaster on duty.

And, as with Freelancer, part of the joy of playing Crossfire is flying around in this great big beautiful cosmos. Op's work on the new planets is certainly up to the standards of the original game. Unfortunately I didn't get a screenshot of the cool wormhole in ...uh....Vega(?). Anyway I didn't get it. But I did snap a few pics of Planet Prophecy which has warm fuzzies for me because it's named after the last Wing Commander game (a moment of silence please....), Sigma 17 just because it's so damn cool-looking, and of course, Mother Earth.

Okay, you know all those stories I wasn't going to tell? Well, hehe, I changed my mind. The following are posts that I've made at the DC forums. You might want to get a drink, these pics could take awhile to upload. It's a whopper (the good news: I'm only posting half of what I could have) A lot of good memories...yep, lot of em.

Okay, some of you might remember this...

This adventure placed me in the awkward position of trying to recruit unlikely candidates into the clan...

Leaving Tekagi's behind me, I started out on this most brief quest.

First, I tried to reach out to everyone in a single declaration...istead I contacted a greater power. I will never be the same again...

Then I was inspired...

...but the Corsairs didn't react kindly to my invitation :cry:.

And then I realized that recruiting PiA members was never going to happen. In a final act of desperation, I tried a local legend...

But he thought that I was proposing a massive PvP pitting himself against the entire DC... (btw, thanks for putting up with me Gunny, it's tremendous fun when you play along with me )

Though outnumbered, the nomads seemed completely hammered. DC supremacy was clear early on.

Weighed down by my earlier meal, my manueverability wasn't what it used to be...

Finding that we could multi-task while trouncing our enemies, we began a theatre production...

Then I got an eerie feeling...

Uh, oh.

Soon enough we were back to work though.

If only we could be this effective against "GRRR"...

And then I suddenly realized that they were gone...each and every one of them. Great battle, people. :wink:

It all started when I tried to play server police in Custodian...

But of course, Crossfire is about...um...Cross fire. Combat that is. Mixing it up. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pics of pvp (I was too busy ducking and exploding), but I did get some wonderful pics of npc's going up in flames. Great entertainment, that. Judging from these, one might think I was a pirate or a pilot of ill repute. Nothing could be further from the truth. I always play on the side of the good guys. But sometimes you gotta have access to Outlaw turf to get stuff. Like Advanced Champion Shields. In which case you gotta make nice with the baddies by sacrificing a few GMG trains or Liberty Cruisers. Which I really hate doing and only do when it's absolutely necessary.
Really.

Bretonia Crusaders make a really nifty blue flash when they pop.

Scratch one Liberty Cruiser. I swear it was Self Defense!

I should try popping a Crusader some time, it looks fun.
