Technically it's not hard to count the probability of a lasgun killing a marine in the open (no cover or buffs giving inv/feel no pain): guardsmen hit on 5+ on a six-sided dice (Conscripts on 6s, Vets on 4+), lasguns wound T4 on 5+ as well and marine has a 3+ armor save (Stormtroopers' Hotshot Lasguns ignore the armor save and Stormies also hit on 4+). Though to be fair, lasgun is actually good at fighting enemies on par with Guard, for fighting Marines there are special (Plasma and Melta guns) and heavy (krak missiles, LASCANNONS) weapons. And far superior vehicles (*cough*Basilisk*cough*).
Also, few things are more awesome than Chimera APC zipping around on full speed with two Vets peeking out of the top hatch with meltaguns like it's a mobster drive-by. Except that meltas can pop tanks. Attached Lord Commissar for inspiring the flak out of other guardsmen around optional. Chimeras are glanced by bolters on 6s on sides and rear, and by krak grens on the front.
