Putting Crossfire campaign on halt

    Is it at all possible to put the Crossfire campaign "on halt", in such a way that it will give you back control over the nav system (setting your own waypoints etc)?


    In between "batches" of missions, the original Freelancer campaign gives you the opportunity to freely explore space, buy new ships and upgrade your equipment. While it is of course possible to simply ignore the Crossfire campaign, you cannot use the nav system, not set your own waypoints etc, and that really ruins travel, trade and exploration for me.

    the FL engine allows this only during the first few missions

    Oh ok. Imho, it's something to consider for Crossfire 2.0 though (if at all feasible). The only way I'm managing to progress through the Crossfire campaign is because I entered that (forbidden...?) Blood Dragon system and bought a Sabre early on. Otherwise I'd be stuck (short of exploring without nav system) with an Anubis or something like that.

    At which point in the "early" (vanilla) storyline do you need a VHF like the Sabre ??
    When you progress in the "early" storyline, exploring a bit you WILL come across an awfull lot of fantastic fighters in all classes.
    ( Lil' hint : esp. when you arrive in Kusari space and Juni lets you run loose, there are GREAT ships to find. Ships that are much used by a lot of top-notch pilots even in MP.)


    When you have completed the vanilla part, remember what a ship is available in NY-system (you came across it already in part 1 of the very first mission.


    There ARE some ... "holes" in the new, the "crossfire"-part of the storyline, where you ARE able to explore, even some/almost every "new" system in Sirius-sector.
    You won't be able to take on missions, but ... for money there is still the "tourist buizznezz" - y'know : "come and enjoy the hospitality of our new PRISON bar in ....-system !" (explore a bit ;-) )


    I think the very first of such "holes" occurs during the hunt for Jack Blinch's map data.
    You are able to use every jump-gate and jump-whole, on the first leg only in Sirius known, but on the second leg you are able to explore all of the X-3043 systems as well.
    There is also such a "hole" after arriving in Coalition-space, where you are able to explore these systems (be warned, you will come across DAMN F----ING hard enemies).


    BUT : ALWAYS REMEMBER THE WAYPOINT the story has sent you to. You HAVE TO PASS THIS WAYPOINT !!! No shortcuts !!!


    There might be some more such "holes" but I haven't really looked for. Just as a little help. ...I hope.

    I didn't "need" the Sabre early in the vanilla campaign, I simply came across it and bought it. I was just saying, it was lucky that I did buy it back then because it would be tiresome and tedious having to travel around without fully functional nav system during the Crossfire campaign in order to make money, make friends with the right factions and so on in order to get a sufficient ship for the CF campaign.


    I guess I'm generally somewhat disappointed in the way the CF campaign doesn't give you a break, because the "beefing up" your ship and firepower and then applying it to storyline battle is an integral, fundemental part of the game's mechanic.


    It's almost a moot point now, because I've run into the same Sol crash issue as so many other people. (Tried deleting autosave, going back to mission savegames etc, to no avail.)


    I wish CF would at least give me the full nav functionality when I want it so that I could freely explore and leave the campaign. Maybe I'll try Open SP instead.

    BTW, some hint: during campaign you will need to land on a base that sells the best guns available to buy. Plus, before landing on it you will be able to take turn and buy a VHF with a biggest amount of bots/bats (but with bad agility though).
    The rest can be bought in Sirius.

    There is no "Sol crash"... if you refer to the situation when you have to escort the convoi to the Orders Headquater at Sol system.


    All you have to do is to wait.
    I assume you get stuck after the convoi got attacked at the tradeline from Jupiter to Earth, where you got the feeling, that nothing happens, nothing moves.
    That's because the "autopilot" of the Train you escort is crap in that it always tries to maneuver with engines "full ahead" and "point blan" to the center of its goal
    (a bit like the sometimes a bit silly "autodockin" at a station, when the autopilot tries to reach the dock point straight TROUGH the station :rolleyes: )
    and therefore doesn't really finds the point, when the"guiding system" of the trade line takes over.
    Just wait.
    ...or - what has helped me sometimes - quit the formation with the train and reengage formation while being on the other side of the train.
    That sometimes "helps" to "realign" the train better with the trade line.
