  • Hey.

I'm completely new to Freelancer, never played it, but after reading so much praise I want to give it a try.

I came here because Crossfire 1.9 is currently the highest-rated mod on moddb, but apart from that, I know absolutely nothing about Freelancer, both vanilla gameplay & modded gameplay.

Would you suggest that I install Crossfire for my first playthrough? Is the original storyline of Freelancer (there is a storyline, right) preserved in Crossfire, or does it presuppose I already played through the vanilla game once?

Also, if I should *not* install Crossfire for my first playthrough, can you recommend another mod, e.g. one that streamlines the interface or something like that?

I'm sorry I'm so clueless, I hope you don't mind me asking those questions here, but it appears this is one of the more active Freelancer forums, so I decided to come here.

  • Well, Crossfire supports the original storyline completely and it actually is required to play it in order to play the crossfire storyline campaign which directly extends the original Freelancer story.

You can play the original storyline without Crossfire but in my eyes it makes not much sense to play with the old graphics when you can have the new graphics of Crossfire instead.

Only dead fish swim with the stream.
Don't discuss with idiots. They only drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience there.

    This is ten percent luck,
    Twenty percent skill,
Fifteen percent concentrated power of will,
    Five percent pleasure,
    Fifty percent pain,
And a hundred percent reason to remember the name!

  • Thanks for the answers! I guess that settles it, I'll install Crossfire.

One follow up question: I also found some Hi-Res pack, and had planned to install it, but that would probably conflict with Crossfire's own improved graphics, right?

  • Crossfire graphics are high-res already and mostly better than the other known graphic updates

for sure other HD mods are pretty good but they recycle a few common textures which limit their variation of look

  • Alright, mod installed, everything looks good :-)

One more question: is there a way to change the font of the text added by Crossfire? It appears that the additional text (menu, ingame tips, etc) added by Crossfire uses a special font, which looks a bit like the Star Trek TNG font. I have problems reading it, is there a way to change that font?

  • ... copy the fonts.ini from the flmm directory (Freelancer Mod Manager 1.31\Mods\Crossfire19\Data\) to the same place in your FL directory
