Basic Rules, Tips and Tricks For Beginners?

  • Hello, I am new to the CF Universe and before I get started I'd like to say how massive the CF universe is. My thread here is not exactly a "help me" thread but more of a "newbie go0to" thread. The first time I loaded up CF and played multiplayer I encounter a lot of the same problems/dilemmas as some of the other new posters here. Mainly;

    1) AI too strong even at low levels
    2) Difficult to earn good amount of money legally
    3) Difficult to earn good money illegally as AI keeps killing before a trade can be completed.
    4) Many players on servers but very few offer help to newbies.
    5) Difficult to get into new systems to get better ships as smaller ships tend to get destroyed before reaching a base.
    6)Excessively long dog fighting

This is just some of my experience. However, I must also say that I had a LOT more GREAT experiences than bad ones to give up on CF. I hope some veterans can share their helpful tips and tricks and basic rules (asside from the "Get a better ship" tip which is obvious but difficult for a newbie who starts out with little knowledge of the CF Universe and fighting skills that are average at best. :)

  • In order to get properly started, there are mostly 2 efficient ways to gather some precious credits (to upgrade ship/equipment)

    - Collecting escape pods from destroyed NPCs (fights may be long at this stage, but that will be good practice and experience) and
    sell them at Prisons

    - Trading goods: it is possible to get some decent benefits without needing to have long distance runs at first.

Once with some money (and lvl ups - collectings wrecks goods is also good solution to rise first levels), you may start upgrading
your ship/equipment - either step by step (ex: Starflier, Defender, Walkyrie, Eagle, better? with better equipment levels), either
a "top" ship directly (if you know where to find one that is).
Much exploration will be needed if you wish to find your "perfect" equipment, but you will soon notice NPCs will die more easily ;)

Hope this will help you (and not spoil too much). Do not give up! ^^

there is no rp for low lvl ppl so you are protected

    space

    the final frontier

  • 1 or 2 mill is quite ok, in order to show some hospitality to newcomers here-----imho

My rule of thumb is that I never give more than 1 mil to newcomers...because 1 mil is all you really need to get the ball rolling to start making more money.

  • Everything you need have to New York and Texas. AI is not at all difficult. On the contrary, NonPlayerCharecter will help you improve your flying skills.

  • conctact me I will help you :D

    Price : your soul

    Seriously:
With the new character undock and dock planet Manhattan, then exit the CF menu and and re-enter the game, the server accepts basic money that you got to start( +lv 18 ).... Gl hf.

  • Hi and welcome

    4) Many players on servers but very few offer help to newbies.

Answer to 4) It has been my experience that if you ask around you will have no issues finding help. IMO it's no fun having everything handed to you. There are lots of new players, so maybe you haven't asked the more experienced players. Keep trying, you will meet many here on CF (from all clans and freelancers alike) who are willing to help you learn more about the CF universe. :D

  • I am after a bit of help also. I have been trading and fighting corporal- sergeant level baddies to get some cash and bought myself a Titan from Tarsus.I noticed lots of other top VHF but the Titan seems to be the strongest. It is also about 8 million cheaper than ships like the Shroud, Werewolf, and so on. Why are these ships so massively expensive when the Titan which seems about as strong (if not more) is 10 times as cheap?

I also saw battlships for sale for about 49 million. If you buy one can you still do the same things as with other ships (ie, sell things, got jobs at the bar etc)?

The area I need help with the most is in dog fights. Killing low level NPCs with my titan and the level 10 guns I found on wrecks isnt a problem but I cant really keep up with them. I actually thik that this might be due to my mouse sensitivity which never feels right and my laptop in general. Anyway, when dog fighting top level ships and NPCs that zig zag all over, I cant ever keep on them for a second to unleash the big guns. Any tips on fighting the top NPCs. I am sure I can grind away at them for ages until they have used up all their bots and shields but there must be some tricks of the trade.

    Thanks

  • Sporadium, the Titan is a good ship except for one little detail...low manuverability. If you get a ship like the Werewolf for example, you'll notice that it turns on a dime & is very manuverable. In my experience, the faster turn rate & higher manuverability make a huge difference.

    Hope this helps some.

  • The Titan, Sabre, Eagle ships are the "top" freelancer vanilla ships... They are indeed pretty strong and "cheap", which makes them
a good intermediate class to purshase when starting, and will help you to reach more easily areas where you can find "better" deals.

The hull armor amount is certainly an important data, but with more experience you will find out it may not be all to look at, specially
    for PvP fights ;)

  • With time, you will be able to try out a bunch of ships, and will be able to find out which suits you better,
according to your own tastes and preferences. ^^

  • Please note that Shroud is located in here:

which is CFPD territory, so look up Tarsus system rules before entering so you don't run into problems. ;)

  • The good thing about Crossfire that I've always loved when creating a new char without credits is that the Very Heavy Fighters from the vanilla version of the game can be found almost EVERYWHERE. In each and every added system ( systems that you can go into from X-3043 ), on each and every station that is not selling any added by the mod ships, you can find Eagle, Titan and Sabre.

As for beginning you can spend some time in Liberty/Bretonia/Rheiland so you can get at least 800K-1 mil credits. After that you can make your way to X-3043 which is definitely not hard and get yourself a nice Eagle to fly with. I`m suggesting the Eagle as it's the perfect ballance between weapons slots and maneuverability, Titan is strong but slow, Sabre has a lot of guns slots but it's still not as good as Eagle. You will purshase the Eagle for around 500K and here comes the best part :

You will go to Arena, dock on the planet, and find ALL the weapons in the lvl range 1-9. This is great because you wont even need a good reputation with the faction to get their weapons ;)

After you get yourself some weapons and shields you can go at Freeport 7 and kill some nomads for Nomads Weapons. But, be careful, the damn bastards are hitting hard D:

Or, if you want codename weapons you can either - ask some player if he/she has some for sale, kill ASF/CSF ships in X ( they hurt even more than the nomads ), farm the wrecks :)

If you have any question, feel free to ask!

EDIT : A few words about the Shroud :

The Shroud was, is and will be one of the best ships in Crossfire. It's great for PvE and PvP because of it's agility ( which I think got a bit nerfed in 1.7 because of complaints how fast it was ) and it's weapons slots. I`m using Shroud for around 4 years now and I can say that it's a great ship !
