    Anatoly Shashkin

posted some pretty nifty preview images of the canceled Origin game, Prowler. This was a mech combat game that some of the Super Wing Commander team worked on in the mid '90s. It never saw the light of day, so there's not much info out there, but the CIC has archived the game's

    box art

    ,

    concept sketches

    and

    back story

. It looks pretty dated today, and these are still pre-release shots from early in development, but this had the potential to be another neat Origin sci-fi series along the lines of MechWarrior. Thanks to Pelinal for the tip!

LOAF recently found a nifty marketing prerelease snap of the Wing Commander 4 box. As the story

    goes

, the stark geometric pattern of the main box eventually gave way to a slipcase sleeve with a more action-oriented center. You can see in the shot below that this bears a fairly strong resemblance to the final design. The core art and even font are in place, but the lettering was repositioned a bunch before production. Note that it just says "Wing IV" on the side though!

Material gathered from the Titan Taranis wreckage has reportedly allowed Achilles Aerospace to complete the research on their prototype Frame Shift Drive.
The recent initiative sponsored by Achilles Aerospace saw over 5000 independent pilots enter the hazardous wreckage of Titan Taranis, retrieving enough Titan Drive Components to allow Achilles to allegedly design a new type of Frame Shift Drive based on Titan technology.
A spokesperson for Achilles Aerospace gave the following update:
The Achilles Corporation would like to commend every brave pilot that responded to our request. The data we are gathering from the collected materials is staggering, and our work has progressed at an astonishing rate. Our teams are hard at work getting the prototype ready for production as I speak, and we are eager to show you all the fruits of our labour very soon.

A living planet. While some may cite technicalities and term this a misnomer, the complex and interconnected lifeforms that call the planet Pahvo their home are the closest known match to such a phenomenon found in the vast expanses of our chartered galaxy. Despite the planet’s vibrant biomes and complex native life, it is largely defenseless against the invading forces that have attempted to claim and corrupt it for their own use. It’s up to you to come to the planet’s aid. The Defense of Pahvo Event will include multiple TFOs, previously featured individually, in a combined Featured Event that will allow players to choose their favored way of defending Pahvo each day, while earning Daily Progress toward a new grand prize reward. Defend the system space above the planet by maintaining and operating a series of defensive satellites, or take to the vibrant wilds of the planet’s surface to

There's already another neat addition to the high definition movie packs that ODVS released last week. While he was originally able to significantly upgrade the DVD quality movies for Wing Commander 4 and Prophecy, fans pointed out that there was also a small batch of clips excluded from the Prophecy DVD edition. This means that the source material we have for these few is only the lower CD quality, but Owen did his best to spruce it up anyways to make as complete a package as possible. In addition to higher resolution, the frame rate has been sync'd up with the rest of the game and brightness/contrast adjusted. If you previously downloaded the large Prophecy video packs, the extra clips can be added separately below. Everything has also been bundled into a "version 2.1" zip that has both last week's movies as well as these new clips. You can find instructions on how to patch WCP to the DVD

John Rairdin was looking at old game trailers and reminded us about the wonderful little teaser for Prophecy on the Game Boy Advance. We reported on it back in December 2002, but that was years before YouTube was founded, so it was just a downloadable wmv file. Since most of you probably haven't seen it before, here it is again! Sure, it's not quite as pretty as the 3dfx version, but keep in mind this was running on a 16 MHz handheld with 256 kb of ram. Three CDs had to be compressed down to less than 32 megabytes - it was quite a technical achievement! You can find this clip, other Prophecy trailers and many more Wing Commander videos in the CIC Holovids section.

We recently talked about the Prophecy Demo and how it adds several additional missions to the game's official plot. Today I wanted to briefly plug Prophecy's training simulator and the ten missions included there. Over the years we've heard from a number of folks who just never did any of the bar simulators after exploding in the Tiger's Claw original TrainSim. Some people see these missions as just a remedial tutorial for new players, but there are also some interesting gauntlets with their own high score boards. They can even include little bits of lore. Most WC games don't have the luxury of shipboard simulators, so when you're playing through one that does (Wing Commander 3 is another good example), don't pass them up! Here's a video of Ben Horne playing level 7, a rousing carrier defense.

Bransfield has made a video about 10 ‘Impossible’ Game Boy Advance Ports. I don't agree with all of the points being made, but they do a really good job of shedding light on some sorely under appreciated releases (as well as non-released games). They highlight Wing Commander Prophecy Advance at the 5:44 mark. Their initial complaints are about how the story was cut down into talking head blurbs and the controls were challenging, which were unfortunately limitations of the platform. The reviewer is quite impressed at Raylight's technical accomplishments though in getting the 3D spaceflight working on the handheld. I would have pointed out that the GBA port also added four-person multiplayer, which is a very nice treat.

wcpmp01t.jpgTwelve years ago, HCl rolled out a major update to his Prophecy multiplayer patch. When users entered their credentials for Crius.net (then the home of our vBulletin-powered discussion boards) into the the launcher, the game would report back typical game statistics like kills/deaths, ejections and time played to the CIC server where they would show up in our

section. As time moved on, the forums were relocated to our primary domain at wcnews.com and the software powering them was changed as well (look

    here

if you are interested in Chat Zone history leading up to the 2011 Xenforo upgrade). If you signed up for our Forums after this transition, there was no way for you to have your results included in our scoreboards. There's a fix for this issue now and it takes just a few easy steps:

    • Sign in on the Chat Zone, or sign up for an account if you don't already have one.
