Yo.
As the title says, when i press the multiplayer button the launcher says "Starting update". i wait and wait and... nothing happens. 20-30 mins no matter. after some time the launcher closes himself hes like screw you i cannot work im going home 
Would like to ask what could possibly be wrong. i have installed it on a fresh windows xp sp3 system with .net 4.0.
Btw: Launcher log says nothing but "Starting update".
restarted the pc already?
Was there launcher auto-update? (should be with new fresh install)
Same problem here from time to time. (Win 7 Home Edition; CF launcher start with admin rights)
Exit launcher and start again. Sometimes I need to exit and restart 2 to 3 times before update started.
which version has the launcher and the launcherupdater? (file settings)
seems to be right. remove the read-only from exe folder - although this shouldnt be required anymore...
how do you start freelancer? by shortcut?
whats the path?, the shortcut must point to the exe folder as working directory
firewall? when it says its starting the update then it actually should start it, unless its kinda blocked...
update (sry, double post): i have switched to the oldest laptop and it works fine there very old rig i can only play at lowest 
still, i would like to know why it doesn't work on the newer laptop. case closed for me.
no idea, i dont have such an old rig, but also not the newest. But its working pretty well here. I have no idea what causes the problems for you. But it seems for some reason it cannot download the files or hangs somewhere else.
If it hangs and its not working you could create a dump with the taskmanager and send it to me.
Or u can try this if update doesnt work.Somehow, with "try and error" i succeded to trick it.1st remember ur default settings for bckup.
Net4.0 comes by default with some settings for Buffer size received/transmited wich XP sp3 cant manage packet frame accordingly. So... try reduce MTU in ur router (PC) settings at a lower value(step by step Optimized MTU Setting ~FIXED THIS GAME~) . Btw i work with 1400 MTU , value with all my packets fly over all intermediate routers unfragmented.
After that look at ur network card propertis and change both Buffertransmitted and received values to 1024.If doesnt work with 1024, try lower values to permit server speed synchronizing with ur host.(remember backups values for undoing
