• Best wishes to this forum - thanks for your help and friendship.

I am assuming that quite of few of us will have Level 10 VHF and will equip it with at least 4 Pheonix or Coalition Gatlings.

We would all like to enjoy ourselves in the game but also be able to defend ourselves from rougue elements if needed.

    So, in PVP, we have

    A. Skill of Pilot
    B. Ship we choose
    C. Selection of equipment in other slots ie. 2x9s (guns/missile/torps possible) and 1 turret
    D. Lag!!

Considering I am not good enough to do anything about A (although trying to get better) - can someone give me tips on B and C?

What is the name of the ship that has 6 level 10 gun slots available?

So far I have learned -
if your opponent is using missiles/torps - dont run straight at them at beginning of fight
Speed of ship and thruster power are very important
If u win - commit suicide - dont dock as this could cost you 700k (I learnt this from Tanatos - thanks mate)
You can beat better opponents if there is lag (thanks ur Highness)
Using guns that quickly reduce shields are good versus NPCs but don't help that much in PVP

Interesting. Is that true? Because it seems like at least one pulse cannon is a part of everyone's arsenal. I would hear more of these PvP tips. Sincerely.

  • Personally, I use twin Tizona Del Cids to quickly lower my opponent's shields and then fling torpedos, mines, CDs, and my 4 codename weps at them to gnaw away at the hull. It may sound simple, but with a little aiming and evasive skill it seems to be very effective :D.

  • i dont thnk i have any guns on my Saracen that do more damage to sheilds than to the hull (2 Vulcans and 4 lvl10 Coalition Gatlings)....i can take down shields fairly quickly with what i have, but what your packing, marhsal, would be almost instantaneous........maybe its time to rethink my strategy.........

  • Marshal, can one assume that you prefer CODENAME guns over PPC's? Do you find the significantly lower projectile speed somewhat of an impediment?

One of my ships has 4 PPC's. Another has two DBMKII and two Nomad Energy Cannons; actually a pretty formidable matchup what with the identical projectile speeds and the zero power usage of the NEC. But, for me, switching from the PPC-equipped ship to the one with the slower guns requires an adjustment. And there's just no way I can score hits with the same frequency I do with the PPC's, although the DBMKII-NEC configuration does more damage when I actually do connect. Works fairly good as long as you have disciplined aim combined with a semi-automatic or short-burst, make-each-shot-count firing style. But those PPC's tear through the distance with a vengeance.

Both my ships have at least one pulse cannon. However I do not use Tizonas with the PPC's because of the vast discrepancy in projectile speed. Adv. Debilitators have faster projectiles, and a higher damage/power-consumption quotient, although they do less damage. To me they seem more elegant for use with PPC's.

I haven't had much opportunity to try myself in PvP. What's this "Top Gun" server event I always see advertised on the Multiplayer server? I scanned the forum but could not find any posts regarding it. Could use some (ahem) gentle practice -- but actually I'll take any form of practice I can get. If I get ripped a new one a few times, oh well -- I am a fairly fast study.

I hope this discussion keeps going a little while longer. I am curious to find out people's thoughts on this type of stuff, and see how different are people's philosophies and fighting styles.

  • Hey finisher - interesting point.

I also made the decision to use Adv. Debilitators with my PPCS but was adivsed by wiser, more experienced, (and lets say much older) player to use Tizonas - and I will give it a go - if I dont like combo I will go back to Adv. Debilitators.

I am interested in PVP and would obviously like to be the best I can be without spoiling the fun I have on Xfire.

For those interested, I spent about 2 hours in Arena last night - after at one point taking on 5 DK Gunbats myself in X303 until the others decided to show up.

I was told a few things and even (due to practice) managed to LEARN something new.

Go on Az, press that, move the mouse this way, can you feel the drift? Go on, now your getting it etc

So thanks to Argos, Maniac, Eclipsya and UAC Doppleganger for letting me use them as shooting practice - much appreciated and I definately feel I have learned a new skill which I managed to use as the PVPs went on.

  • Well ... codenames ...

Dissadvantages of codenames that most ppl call are:

    1) slow projection speed
    2) smaller range
    3) higher energy use
    4) in main - lower refire rate

    How i see the things

    1) projection speed dont matter much in close combat it do difference but its small enough also if there is ppl that think the aiming (means the red cross :D ) dont concider the gun specs like range and speed - you're mistaken

    2) in pvp both players usuallydont go beyond 600-700m distance even they dont go over 400-450m

    3) that is no longer correct - grab a calculator and check out how much energy ppc/gattlings do per second and do the same for Diamondback MKII (that use more energy than all codenames except few more that have same usage) and you will see that PPC have little higher energy usage. Afterall energy usage is controlled only and all from you - means you have to find how to find your way to use them effectively.

    4) If you can aim (and overall to fight) this will be nolonger a problem.
