A bottle of Rum

  • Got accosted by some cowardly pirates the other night in X303 system. I tried to plead poverty to their demand for $1mill.

I thought offering 50k was a suitable amount to buy my passage through the system but the Blackbeard only went down to $100k.

I got away in the end but the experience got me thinking about Pirates and possible negotiations.

Can't we buy our free passage with goods instead of hard cash? Pirates are generally a miscretinous lot and usually can't see beyond gold/rum/diamonds?

What if instead of paying tax we could get away with giving them a share of the booty? Instead of paying $1-5Mill would LP's accept 20 cargo of Gold/Whiskey or Diamonds?

If you did not have any of the above to offer pirates then I accept you should pay the penalty.

    What do LP's think?

  • Actually that's a pretty good idea :D you cannot earn enough through taxing so why bother with money? most VHFs carry around 100 cargo and the npcs demand cargo so the pirates could ask for a donation of cargo instead, I really like this idea so i will speak to PiA about it

  • I'm certainly not a pirate, but I've been using cargo items as barter for quite awhile already. I think it'd be great if pirates started taking loot, but they'd have to be seletive about it or they'd never make any money (Arrrrgh, hand over ye water and scrap metal or I'll blow ye brains out! :P).

  • I am not sure if it is about making money as pirates make 100k ?? for blowing a ship out of the water. Is that correct? Is it always 100k or is it level dependant? Therefore it is unlikely they would make more money in the short term.

In fact if there was an agreement on certain goods and this was well known, pirates could make more money (like a percentage cut of all trade through X303 (or other systems they patrol).

This may mean less PVP but more roleplay.

Some pirates off course may prefer the PVP.

Is there a certain commodity that is traded through X303? Maybe pirates could concentrate on that item.

  • Well I dont care how they pay... one trader gave me 10 cargo....KRT_King Arthur offered to pay in nomad guns....main thing is they pay ;)8)

  • Well I have always maintained that piracy is not a proffesion, but a hobby.

If I do not make money at it fine, I do it to have fun, so a good joke, a funny story, a quick battle, as long as we both get someting out of our exchange, I am good

  • The other option is of course to hire a Merc. We can help point you at good trade routes as well as provide an escort. This for a small % of your profits.

For a slightly higher fee we also offer the service of revenge.

BTW. If you are going to pay me in goods then a few cases of 12YO Single Malt is always a good way to start the negotiations.

  • Well, if people accepts negotiating everytime, crossfire wouldn't be so fun. Part of the joy in a game like this - a space shotter - comes from the PVP, and from the fear some pirate chars can make on traders heart. I think if one guy wishes to offer something else instead of money, he has to accept the fact that the pirate can also preffer to put his ship down. At least, that's the spirit on RPG.

  • I've actually never witnessed a player paying the tax, lol. There's plenty of PvP when Pirates go to work. This bartering with cargo may make players stop saying "no" as often, but there will still be plenty of people willing to fight tooth and nail to the very end :D.
