Interesting, I liked "old" mortal kombat movie due music and story. This trailer is not telling much except showing better effects and seems more "bloody".
Yeah, the old one (the very first one) had its charm despite its aged CGI.
The new one from 2021 does a good CGI job but fails at pretty much everything else.
The story is total non-sense since the tournament is mentioned but then totally ignored throughout the entire movie. The fight scenes are a chaotic mess with the fights happen simultaneously and the camera switching between them back and forth.
Too much CGI during the fights and the fatalities didn't make the fights any better. In general I think the fights in the original movie were better because every fighter had a very unique fighting style.... different stances... different techniques. All of that made the fights look and feel different.
But in the 2021 movie most of the fights felt like an MMA cage fight. Brutality over style. The fighters relied more on shooting lasers, flames, ice, lightning bolts, metal hats, etc. than on showing combat skills.
The first 8 mins of the movie were released on youtube... and that pretty much was the best part of the movie. This truly was a good start, interesting to watch and then it got worse.
Of course the movie was full of the typical movie mistakes such as characters all of a sudden knowing about stuff that actually was only revealed to the audience in a scene totally unrelated to that character (I hate that).
It also did not help to introduce a new main character that never ever was seen in MK before. That just makes you wonder throughout the entire movie who that guy actually could turn out to be. Character development was inexistent for all of them. The original movie at least had a bit of that and also had a bit of humor which was completely missing in the new movie.
What bothered me most was the music... too loud... too much of the same non-stop sound exposure. No real variations, no adaptation to the fights, not even much of the MK theme... just generic loud noise.
