So, with support for win XP ending soon....and I'm sure many of you have more modern systems....what's the general thoughts on what OS to upgrade too? I think win 7 pro is what I'm going to go for but I'm open to hear why I would think otherwise

OS upgrade?

Frankly, i prefer to use Win7 instead of Win8. I installed Win8 on my PC, few months with it, then i removed it and installed Win7... and i'm still using it until now...
Since i'm not a computer thingy guy, as a layman... Win7 is much more responsive like a comparison between VHF and Freighter kind of thing... hehehe

I will take that experience into consideration.....thanx

Win7 all the way. Although they did say Win 8.1 has a massive performance boost, but it's Microsoft, so I don't trust it. I'm using Win7 Ultimate for... I'm pretty sure it's been a couple of years already, serves me like a charm.

Concur with Zhe Boss - currently using Win7 (3 years - no problems) will be upgrading to Ultimate soon when I upgrade the motherboard, RAM, video cards and PSU. A lot of Win8 performance and benefits only work with a touch screen.

Exactly my point

WIn7 x64 if you have the hardware (you probably do) - have a look at Compare Windows 7 Editions - Windows 7 Help Forums

Sounds like win 7 is the way to go for me then. Only thing I see advantage to 8 is maybe a bit longer end support , but I really don't see any advantage to touch screen stuff.
Thanks guys

I'm testing Windows 8.1 atm and it's a really good one. Automatic detection and installation of missing components as directplay and .Net Framework 3.5 - pretty cool
I also bought a SSD disc and did a clean install, which I also recommend.Maybe some day you go for an upgrade
Edit byThe Metro User Interface, can be deactivated (almost) -
"almost" is the problem
-
I you follow this guide How to eradicate Metro from your Windows 8.1 PC | PCWorld and buy the Stardock’s $5 Start8, Metro UI is pretty much gone and Windows ->7 Desktop is back.
I settled with hitting ESC-key every time I left-click "Start" button, instead of right-clicking. I don't have the All Programs menu though, but I put my programs in the desktop taskbar and the desktop (like allways).
Forgot to tell that you need a Microsoft Account for setting Windows up (but I am not 100% about this) -
It those kinds of issues with Win 8 that most recommendations are to stay with Win 7 which is more flexible and user friendly then Win 8 will ever be.
-
windows 7 is a damn fine OS
windows 8 has for sure also its benefits (as its more powerful and resource friendly)my all time favorite for "working" remains windows xp
i can work faster and more effective in it than in win 7 -
