Some help for a beginner

  • I've been searching everywhere, and there doesn't seem to be some kind of strategy guide for Crossfire. Although I love this mod, I've got the same problem every other noob starts whining about ;) The difficulty man. I didn't even start mission 3 yet, and I'm already finding it difficult to survive some situations.
So I've got a couple of questions:
    1. I'm flying a defender at the moment. Would this ship be good enough to take on mission 3 and the following ones? If not, where can I find a ship better suited for the missions ahead?
    2. I read a lot of people saying how it would help to explore a lot before starting mission 3. Are the guns you can find on wrecks really that good? Should I pick up those first?
    3. What would be a good balance for weaponry? I'm having difficulty trying to figure out which 'blend' of guns fits my ship. The firing rate of my guns should be close of course, but I also need
some guns that deliver hull damage. Anybody got a nice weapon mix that would work well for the first couple of missions?
    4. Do you normally play in free-flight mode? I mean the one with the realistic physics (don't know what it's called exactly)?
    5. Did I overlook some kind of starters-guide to crossfire gameplay?
    6. Any other tips for the first stages of the game?

Thanks a lot! (And thanks for this great mod which I hope I'll master eventually)

  • Hello Goldfield,

I will try help you with start answering some of your questions. As soon as you will be able leave NY, you can found ( Texas ) prison stations where you can sell escape pods. Such way you can raise your moneys quick. In systems not far from NY are wrecks with Codename 10 lvl guns which are enough for all old vanilla missions. You have also in NY one and in nest systems more Very Heavy Fighters which can use 10 lvl guns. For guns (if different types) should be followed one main rule: use weapons with the same projectiles speed (Note: higher speed is better). Usual fighting is done in free-flight using 3rd person view. Can be good idea learn how to use reverse trust and engine kill. Some guides for fight: index.php?page=Thread&threadID=25139

  • Thanks for the tips MartinD. I guess I should be looking for those wrecks then. I already made one run to Texas to sell some prisoners, I almost got blown to pieces but I managed to escape with a lot of money. Sounds like I really need those lvl 10 guns first now :)

  • martind is right, to a point. there is another alternative - if u have at least 1 million credits in your account, go to custodian and buy a cheap vhf like a sabre, also get a level 10 shield and a couple of half decent guns. after the purchases go to the x system and then to the Freeport 7 gate and kill nomads to collect their guns. nomad guns do not use any of your ships power and are quite powerful. in fact this configuration will see you through most of the game and allow you time to build up your cash and experience enough to buy a decent ship and better equipment.

it is merely an alternative, one that I used. have fun, the SP campaign is a good tutorial for the CF MP.

    cheers

As a reminder, Custodian is again an official clan system, and there are restrictions on ships, passage, and stuff. Most is related to players above level 40, but still, it's better not breaking one of the BG's system rules :) There is no danger of ban, so no need to worry hard, but it's still better being friendly with the cops on the server :D

are you overlooking the fact that Goldfield was asking questions about playing in the SP story, he did mention mission 3 was difficult.
are you saying then that even in SP custodian is a clan system???

    just saying

    ;)

  • No, that's just a reminder for when the readers (anyone who read this thread) try do it on the server :D

For sure, there are no rules for Singleplayer.
