LAN issues

  • First of all, hi. I do enjoy Crossfire, it's quite a deep mod and really makes freelancer what it was meant to be. This isnt the usual LAN thread though, so dont discount it straight away.

I get why you wouldnt want people to have the server files required for running the game, and I get why you dont want multiple servers (even if they are private LAN servers) showing up and taking from your possible player base. But here's the deal.

My brother isnt a fan of rules or complicated RP systems or anything like that, but I love playing with him. (We're a great team.) Anyway, the problem is, I want to host a LAN so I can play with him, but obviously, I cant do that with the Crossfire mod. The kicker is though, I cant seem to turn the mod off...

    So, any help? Suggestions?

  • Greetings Dieb! Welcome to SWAT and also to Crossfire! :)8)

Sadly, your brother's situation is unfortunate, there are rules on the servers for a reason and the role-play is there to keep things interesting and ever-changing...(and keep the server from becoming boring... Shocking, I know! :D )

Yes, I too have run into the issue of deactivating the mod and it screws up, making me have to delete Freelancer, the FLMM 1.3 Mod Manager, the entire mod itself and reinstall everything again.(but it's worth the hassle! :D )

Sooooo... Sorry to say, if your brother isn't into dealing with rules, the role-play of the server and does not want to play singleplayer/offline, well... There isn't any other option for you both to play at the same time. :(

Honestly I would encourage you both to try to play together on the server, we have lots of friendly players from all over the world and many of them are willing to help you both starting out. The rules may seem a bit restrictive, but they are there to serve the server's purpose and to keep order. The role-play will allow you both to be freelancers starting out if you so choose and then you can do whatever you both want to do then, you do not have to join any clan right off the bat. However, this still means you are affected by it to some degree... If you are on the server during the right times though, you won't hardly have to worry about pirates taxing you, or mercs looking for a bounty on your heads or a cop fining you for smuggling or breaking laws. Besides, don't knock it till you've tried it, he might actually like the role-play once he's tried a role-play character he likes.. Besides Mercs, Cops, Pirates and Smugglers, there are other more "Freelancer" type role-playing characters not mentioned or officially declared on the server like the clan I'm in, the Silver Arrows. We're more like an "Order" type clan, we defend humanity from alien threats kinda like the Order do from the storyline. There is also another role-playing character I hope in the future will become more developed and accepted, like a "Miner" type character...

Anyway, you get the idea, I hope this helps and I hope your brother will reconsider his stance on the server... Take care and hope to see you guys in space! :)

  • Thank you for the greeting, and thank you for the response.

Unfortunately for him indeed, but if he feels too restricted he just doesnt have fun. Sort of a case of "you dont miss it till you cant do it"

I dont mind fiddling constantly to be able to play with him, but if I have to do complete uninstalls all the time, my main concern is that I'll never be able to keep any saves I make in SP, which troubles me a bit (because I do so love the story)

If complete uninstall/reinstalls is the only way though, I suppose I'll make do.

I'm not sure about him, but I'll definantly see you in space. Thank you again for the help

  • You both can come as freelancers...
in CF freelancers are free to choose their own RP, and do whatever while it's not insulting or hacking or logical unhealthy stuff... it's not that in CF is like in Discovery, you can't move, can't even steal some asteroid loot from another without getting banned... here unless you cheat or provoking others with heavy stuff, there's nothing wrong for a freelancer, there's mroe freedom you can think :P

Also this version is new, and complicated, there're still few issues with server files ourselves still have to fix, so they're not ready to give out.

    Chars: [CFPD]Michael~something (x25), [CFPD]~SQMS~{[(store)]} (x3), [CFPD]xfer, Event~Manager~Michael, StarfIier~EM~Michael, Event_Team_2, [GR]Michael[SP] and a blueprint of [CFPD]Sephirothis

  • even if i would hand out the serverfiles you would not be able to use them as you can not sychronize your server with the client version
