Server re-initiation

  • This weekend (30th May...) I want to re-initiate the Crossfire server. Originally this was planned with the Crossfire 1.8 release but since i am not sure how Crossfire will run on windows 2008 I intent to install it now and do some tests in the next few weeks.

If the performance is better than with win 2003 and if the CF tools are running well on that system we will stay on this system and no further changes on the server side will be needed. Otherwise we will switch back to win 2003 (but this time to 32bit version to ensure the compatibility of several tools).

These changes are neccessary to raise the performance of the server. Since I have to do massive backups the server might be a bit laggy on saturday afternoon. Sunday morning the server will be offline for about 3-4 hours. I will get the server running as soon as possible but very likely the server will be a bit laggy on sunday afternoon since I have to download the backups again and setting up the services. The dynamic economy will very likely be deactivated till monday.

If somebody already has experience with Win 2008 and its performance then Id be glad to get some info. Also some info about its 32bit support would be cool... or if there are tools which can run/simulate processes in 32bit mode (better than the win 2003).

Only dead fish swim with the stream.
Don't discuss with idiots. They only drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience there.

    This is ten percent luck,
    Twenty percent skill,
Fifteen percent concentrated power of will,
    Five percent pleasure,
    Fifty percent pain,
And a hundred percent reason to remember the name!

  • what's the problem with 64-bits? I don't have any problem running any 32-bit apps on 64-bit windows and it should be that way.

    From wikipedia:

    Quote

x86-64 processors can run existing 32-bit or 16-bit x86 programs without sacrificing speed or compatibility, and in addition, they support new programs written in an extended instruction set, which features a 64-bit address space and other capabilities

    Fix'd.

  • yeah - thats the big 64 bit lie
many tools dont run correctly on 64bit
there are even processor specific problems with 64bit

  • yep, the thing about 64 bits lie is true... 64 has some things better and others not working, always few incompatibility isues, one of the reasons I have more Windows installed...

Also no need of remakeing the server's update asap, it's better a larger offline server's status than a 3 hours update that can have problems :) so our acomplished dreams while in the server don't get interrupted by issues.

    Chars: [CFPD]Michael~something (x25), [CFPD]~SQMS~{[(store)]} (x3), [CFPD]xfer, Event~Manager~Michael, StarfIier~EM~Michael, Event_Team_2, [GR]Michael[SP] and a blueprint of [CFPD]Sephirothis

  • yeah - but i dislike the idea to spend more time with it than neccessary

  • If there are problems after the server is re intialised, does that mean that any player data/saved game after the backup on the 30th will be lost, or are backups done regularly?
    Thanks for your hard work

  • I am having problems with trading - getting kicked with possible cheat message. Also everything I did yesterday (31 May) has been lost. Ship positions, cash transfers, trade profit etc. My characters are as they were at the end of play on 30. I assume this is to do with the re-initiation of the server.

  • same here, its understandable that a few teething probs will arise, question is should we carry on in the hope that game positions are being saved/backed up at the moment? if only we could save them on our own puters.....?

  • they can not be saved on your own computers
and the "lost day" is due to the fact that I did the backups one day before I re-initiated the server

that there are some cheat kicks is nothing unusual since the server has no dynamic universe and dynamic economy activated yet. That means you have the player data from 31th on your client pc while the server is running with the backups from 30th. -> incompatible

  • some? i'd say that getting kicked for buying or selling anything is a bit more than some. any timeframe on when this is getting fixed?

My what a lovely shade of red you are, looks like someone got too close to that black hole...

  • it has been fixed already
all server functions are running like before
