SWAT - public/restricted

  • since years it is required that users have to register in order to view the forum

    pro:
    - SWAT has the highest activity rate in the entire Freelancer community since people which register have higher motiviations to take part in the community (its a psychological aspect)
    - we get valid contact information of community members since they have to register to be part of a community instead of just reading the forum in the background
    - due to the many registrations we also have a very big database for the newsletter system which also causes positive effects
    - this forum is free of spam bots (except the one called "supercars")

    contra:
    - some people refuse to register
    - network bots can not access SWAT (such as the google bots) which is why SWAT does not have the highest rankings on search engines
    - a complicated activation process

Only dead fish swim with the stream.
Don't discuss with idiots. They only drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience there.

    This is ten percent luck,
    Twenty percent skill,
Fifteen percent concentrated power of will,
    Five percent pleasure,
    Fifty percent pain,
And a hundred percent reason to remember the name!

  • We absolutely need the registration process in my eyes, not only to hold bots away (otherwise mods would have much to do to keep th forums clean).

The rankings on search engines is not only done caoz the bots are kept away (but yes its one part). You can give bots a reading access to the forums. At least i know that this is possible with phpBB3 ;) (but not sure if wbb has such a function). Also people who do not register dont have something useful to say or ask. We could maybe introduce some kind of guest account without all the needed information for registering - with limited access for posting but the access to read nearly all (depend on where the guest want to register for)

    imho...

  • dont think that its possible to give bots the right to browse the forum since they are handled like ordinary guests

  • robots and htaccess should be fine already (google scans the SWAT main site already)
the problem is the access to the forum

  • like i already mentioned in phpBB3 you can give them several rights to browse and "read" the forums. in phpBB3 the default used for bots is "Bot access".

This wont help here much, as this is wbb. But all i want to say is -give bots a user account with appropriate forum right.

BTW: The listing for SWAT at google is: click here

that does not work since every user has to sign in with password... exceptions for specific usernames can not be done... especially since bots dont really use such usernames (that is just a setting of new forums which give them names based on their origin)

  • Then you cannot create users by the wbb acp?
If not you could add the bots via sql to your database. I have looked in my board. The bots are registered as users by default (its made with the installation) they all are grouped in the bots group and every bot can get different rights (in the acp they are dealt as they would have been normal users - without given password. Kind of anonymous user) - Mostly bots only need read access.

  • yes i can create users on the acp
but as long the bot does not know the password it can not sign in
not to mention that a bot does not sign into an account.... your board just allow a guest with the signature of a bot to have a username... (which is nothing but a fake username and not a real account)

There should be workarounds for this (like using user-agents for automatically optimized & SEO'd pages for bots to access.

Thats correct. Bots need special handling by th board software. I know that it is supported by phpBB3 - but not sure how wbb is using this... I am even not sure if the new wbb supports it. Otherwise its kind of hard to setup bots to browse the forum...

Thats true as well. Bots have a special handling. So if the board sw does not support it - i am not sure if we can let them browse the forums...

    What about sitemaps... look here

  • dunno... im not that familar with that kind of stuff

  • ok. sitemaps are xml files that list the content (urls) that are can be used by bots/agents. You have to leave a comment in the robots.txt with the url to the sitemap. Its at least a trial to let the bots read the given forums...

  • but does it let the bots see the content?

  • Quick idea: let the bots read only topic names, not the full topics

  • not sure if they can see the content. At this site the content of the swat-portal.com is not shown when i select the google bot. here you can test the view of a bot.

I tested it with my page, I also generated a sitemap for my page, uploaded it to my root directory and have had a look on the google webmasters tool (online - need registration) if everything works. The sitemap was detected and parsed and gave me information about my page.

    Here is my robots.txt

    Code
    1. User-Agent: *
    2. Allow: /
    3. Sitemap: (url of my sitemap.xml)

There are some sitemap generator out for using - but you also can create this file manually :)

  • yep idea is to let the search engines find the content. The more people will read it the better it is. Thats not the question :)

But i would be very careful to let everyone here post something. I had some experiences with advertisement posts (mostly for viagra and other stuff). For this its better to register - coz then mainly you will get rid of most of them ;)

  • LoL

Here is realy too much knowledge for me.
