Freelancer newbie observations on Crossfire 1.7

  • I've been playing Crossfire v1.7, Sirius SP, for a while now and have explored every vanilla system (that didn't cause a crash, anyway) and hack-explored the CF ships. Since CF 1.8 is on its way, I thought now might be a good time to share some thoughts from a Freelancer newbie trying out CF. So here, in no particular order, are some observations:

    [Ships]
.Quality control is, IMO, desperately needed. Some ships are nicely detailed, others on par with the lower end of vanilla Freelancer (like FL's Eagle and Titan), and still others are "WTF?" -- (apologies to the creator) like the Mayfly. I'm sure the Mayfly has its own place concept wise, but it could use a bit of work to bring it up to par aesthetically.

.I wouldn't mind seeing vanilla FL ships somewhat redone or replaced entirely. The lower end quality models like the Eagle-type ships, for example, could be replaced by a 3- or 4- ship set from the new models. I think Crossfire could raise the bar for FL mods by more ruthlessly exercising quality control, and not being afraid to change existing models.

.More sets! The vanilla FL Dagger-Stiletto-Sabre is a fairly good example of an "evolution" of ships, and I think it would be nice to see more of that sort of thing. It enhances the experience of the game by more tightly distinguishing factions. With enough ships, even every vanilla FL faction could have their own type of ship, even if some are offshoots of another (e.g., kusari corporations might adapt kusari naval ships?)

.Many ship models appear to come with a gun (that is, either a turret or a stick that is part of the model) but this item does not disappear once the actual guns are mounted. I recommend those pieces be either removed from the model, from the model after it is bought (is this even possible?) or "pasted over" by a mounted gun.

.Many ships cost more than 2 million credits. So why bother even setting a level limit on it? At about 2.5 million credits, the pilot is already level 38. Unless the rank is extended, just set everything to level 0. If they can buy it, they're probably already at the required level.

    [Ship Classes]
.There is an opportunity to revamp Freelancer's ship structure into a much more flexible and customizable system by extrapolating the Power Generator and Weight Reduction systems. For example, suppose *every* ship starts out more or less Very Light (and should be given a visible rating for the buyer), has a standard low Power generator, and all hardpoints and turrets are capable of Class 10. If you add more Power, you reduce carrying capacity and add weight (and thereby affect agility), but you can then have a more decent rate of fire on your monster guns. If you add Weight Reduction, you reduce carrying capacity but increase agility. To balance things out, make (hardpoints + turrets + torpedoes) correspond to the starting weight.
.I believe Wing Commander Open SP Freelancer does something similar to this.

.If power has a definite cap, then ships can have a lot more hardpoints and turrets (and maybe sell some dummy guns so that pilots can more conveniently select which hardpoint to use), since they can't fire all of them anyway. The general 6/1 limit is boring.

    [Bases]
.There seemed to be little rhyme or reason as to the distribution of commodities and equipment. Occasionally I would come across (for example) a shield upgrade or power generator... But why? Why this base and not others? And why only one, and why it's particular level?

.Way too many commodities. Way too many. There are several ways of handling this, such as: (1) Regional commodities - limit the distribution and good-buy locations of certain products to certain areas based on availability, demand, and role they play in the local economy. (2) Import/Export specialities - Correspond goods bought and sold more strongly to the base or planet faction, purpose, and background. Also talk about it in the bio and in NPC chats in the bar. (3) Trim. Especially the "black market goods". At present, they are just the same item with different prices and different names. There isn't even a writeup of what each item is or its relevance to the game world.

.I recommend also more pervasively spreading out the new ships and ship equipment from Crossfire into the existing Freelancer markets. Otherwise, Sirius plays far too much like normal Freelancer that the mod is practically invisible. With so much new infrastructure, there is a great opportunity to enhance basic FL gameplay that even new players will find Crossfire a good mod to install before playing any FL.

.Since Crossfire updates files every time it starts up, there is an opportunity to periodically change the market data, providing a more organic market experience. But this might be too much work, unless the file can be auto-generated (say in Excel, with a random-number function for the price multiplier, and then exported as .csv into an .ini).

    [Crossfire Systems]
.I highly recommend you get them all out of Sirius. Vanilla FL Sirius is not terribly cluttered, but the introduction of CF systems there makes it a spaghetti. Have one gate access one starting Crossfire area, and nothing else anywhere else.

  • Here be my lots of 2-cents :)

    1. SWAT_OP-R8R [creator of CF] wanted to leave the Vanilla FL how it is -> w/ all vanilla ships unchanged etc
    2. I kinda agree about quality... kinda...
    3. Ship evolutions [like Dagger->Stiletto->Sabre] => yes that would be cool for CF ships in 1.8
    4. Regional commods. -> Like what? Rheinland exporting Bratwurst & Beer ^^? tho... something maybe could come out of this...
    5. Imo OP wouldn't put all new stuff in Vanilla systems coz
    ---a: see point 1
---b: there wouldn't be need to explore and learn and advance if everything could be bought at ur neighbour's house
    6. There IS a dynamic universe+economy, and since that is one of the main features of CF, every 2nd n00b who tries CF knows that. it changes like one a day or something like that...
    7. I kinda like how the systems are placed only
---a: there could be a kinda backdoor-entry to altair ;)
---b: the systems of the X-3043 gates should be more useful -> connected to other (both Vanilla and CF systems), with something special (ok the wrecks but who needs em since everyone uses PPCs, CGs or DKAs?)

and finally 8: CrossFire is sooo much better in MultiPlayer than in SinglePlayer

  • many ships in crossfire are copyrighted by the original authors and cant be changed
others are either high quality and some others are going to be reskinned with 1.8
but to edit all ships and re-texture them will take years and since there are no other modelers besides me and considering that i also have to most other the other work its unlikely that all the ships can be improved

the choice of the ship models has been done very carefully since i only allow ships that fit to FL

your idea with the ship classes is not possible to be done since Crossfire does stick very much to the original game and to the original balance

the hardpoints also will stay the way they are and they are ship class specific

the equipment has been spread all over sirius in order to keep players interested in exploration and the equipment is partly rare (just like in vanilla FL)

i dont know what you mean with too many commodities since there are only the vanilla ones... about 5 special ones like whisky or coffee and some BMGs which have a special purpose for the online gameplay
the use of regional commodities is not a good idea since the traderoutes will be very short which is not very good for RP
it also might cause uber traderoutes in combination with the dynamic economy

the purpose of crossfire was to extend FL without touching too much of the original game... especially in the normal SP
the vanilla ships are still cheap so they can be used there and the new ships are only available in the new systems due to the CF storyline

even many of your suggestions cant be turned into reality id like to thank you for your contribution

  • What I find interesting about CF is the fact that commodities change locations - ie; whiskey ( whisky ) prices change and swap planets, this is the same in reality, Red Label was available in the Uk until a few years ago when local sales were stopped and this product can now only be bought overseas. As an ex Merchant Naval Engineering Officer I travelled 7.5 million miles around this planet and saw products that were local but as trading efficiency has increased, some of these products are available worldwide, so no probs from me on this issue.

As for ships themselves, I'm using a Bullpup Freighter and I like it a lot, good cargo space, carries 9 weapons, 3 of them L9 turrets, but some ships simply don't perfom as their specs would have you believe. This again is similar to reality, a new car might sound great, a typical sales ploy, but once bought you might then find it's not what you expected, a kind of ' horses for courses'.

Systems however could do with being toned down slightly, I've 1 gig of DDR 400, with a X1600 Radeon Pro 512 meg, but still get screen freeze in both the DK systems and at Yakutsk.

One thing of note however is; Gaia or Gaea, known as Earth or Mother Earth (the Greek common noun for "land" is ge or ga). She was an early earth goddess and it is written that Gaia was born from Chaos, the great void of emptiness within the universe, and with her came Eros. She gave birth to Pontus (the Sea) and Uranus (the Sky). This was achieved parthenogenetically (without male intervention). Other versions say that Gaia had as siblings Tartarus (the lowest part of the earth, below Hades itself) and Eros, and without a mate, gave birth to Uranus (Sky), Ourea (Mountains) and Pontus (Sea).

Therefore the Sol System is represented in the Vanilla FL as Edinburgh, which means there are 2 Earths.

Manhattan is known as The Devil's Kitchen, The Dyson's Sphere would represent Styx, The Ames Research Centre and the Kepler mission is part of Nasa, thus The Boridin Space Station duplicates what is already there.

Having said all this I love CF, but it's very annoying having too many ships spawning so frequently, which I guess is why the Vanilla FL was reduced to the basic setup, and why some mods simply don't work.

Sorry to bore you with these details, but I think it best I get them off my chest.

On one final note, CF does have a few missing details, mineable / unmineable areas are detected but don't show, the number of new wrecks do not tally with the readme file. Missions aren't as one would expect as some are right in the centre of a minefield, or areas that aren't accessible.

As for MP / RP, that is not what I bought the game for, as I design my own own birthday cards etc for non-commercial use, and being an admin on a few other forums means I simply don't have time.

All in all, this one excellent forum, and I greatly appreciate the hard work you modders do.

  • yeah, with those minor bugs fixed, like nav map and infocards, cf would really b a hell of magnificent mod. but it's great anyway. :D

and i am sure we'll make it even better next release. :]
