Display MoreThe work continues! Our exploration of Wing Commander Prophecy's hidden mechanics has been taking longer than we expected but we are ready to premiere the WCPedia pages for the second series... along with a couple of fascinating discoveries! This week we are looking at the G'wriss Series which introduces enemy capital ships and gives you the first look at the multi-wing strikes that make a lot of Prophecy missions so cool! There are six missions in series C but you will only encoutner three of them in any given playthrough. C1 is the same for everyone and we've discovered some cool secrets there. C2 is decided based on how much damage the Midway takes in C1, with more damage meaning more NAV points to visit (just one in C2a, two in C2b and three in C2c).
You can find the individual pages for the first series missions below.
- C1: G'wriss - Convoy Rescue
- C2a: G'wriss - Alien Starship Encounter
- C2b: G'wriss - Shrike Escort
- C2c: G'wriss - Enemy Starship Encounter
- C3a: G'wriss - Cruiser Assault
- C3b: G'wriss - Hydra Fleet Assault
You can find the previous series, H'rekkah, here. And you can also track all the individual ship spawns with my updated notes using this spreadsheet. We found 236 spawns across the G'wriss series!
C1: G'wriss - Convoy Rescue
This is the mission with the famous reference to the "Taliban colony" in the briefing. Though I suppose history did bear that one out. It's a fascinating mission because it boasts seven planned NAV points with six of their spawns being decided randomly. It's possible to fly to several points without encountering anything... or maybe you'll get lucky and get a squadron of Moray at all of them!
That aspect was documented but we quickly found one that wasn't: if you RETURN to NAV 2 or NAV 3 after visiting NAV 4 (where you encounter the transports and the Redeemer) then the game will give you a Barracuda corvette escorted by a fleet of Squid! So that's sixteen additional kills no one knew were possible.
There's also a completely hidden NAV point! If you change your course BEFORE reaching NAV 4 then you will fail the mission... and on the way home you'll encounter a Hydra cruiser with Squid and Moray escorting it! It's the first time you can encounter a Hydra in the game and it's narratively connected to the rest of the series. Pretty neat!
The other missions don't have hidden NAV points this time around but you'll find plenty of interesting notes in the wcpedia pages. G'wriss c3c even has a squadron of Wild Weasel Panthers flown by Diamondback pilots! Why don't they let us fly Panthers?!
