One such franchise that its fans have been longing to see a new experience from has been Mass Effect. While the latest new title, Mass Effect: Andromeda rubbed off on many the wrong way, the recent release of the Mass Effect Legendary Edition has helped fans become optimistic again for the series. A new Mass Effect title had been confirmed to be in the works, though now it seems that the next Mass Effect game may not use the Frostbite engine it most recently used.
Some crafty sleuths have uncovered a new detail about the next Mass Effect game in a job listing on the official EA website. The new job position is for a technical director for a franchise game at EA, with details in the description claiming that Mass Effect is the particular franchise in question. The job requirements are mostly expected, such as experience working on a AAA game and having knowledge of different game domains. The one unexpected note is that knowledge of the Unreal Engine is considered an asset for this role.
This would seem to indicate that the next Mass Effect game will be using the Unreal Engine, either 4 or 5, depending on if it is meant to make use of next-gen hardware capabilities. This would break the new trend of EA forcing its projects to use the in-house Frostbite Engine. Supposedly, the Frostbite Engine has been attributed to the cause of the issues that plagued Andromeda. If this move to Unreal Engine indeed happens, this may be a means of avoiding another situation like Andromeda. Whatever the new game ends up using, one way or another, it will likely be a step up from their last attempt.
