Display MoreBioWare’s beloved Mass Effect trilogy is getting a much-needed makeover for the upcoming Mass Effect Legendary Edition, the original space-exploring RPG receiving slew of modern performance and visual upgrades. Of the many particular changes coming to the original ME game, the driveable ground vehicle known as the Mako has seen one of the most major overhauls as it ditched its infamously touchy maneuverability for a more traditional, physics-bound experience. However, it looks like fans can also go back and use the old Mako if they so choose.
As revealed in a recent interview with PC Gamer, environment director Kevin Meek and project director Mac Walters confirmed the floaty original Mako will indeed ship with Mass Effect Legendary Edition as an alternative to the new control scheme. ”For those people out there who do like pain, we’ve left the option to leave it back kind of closer to the original controls as well if you want,” Meek assured. In addition, Walters added:
“You’ll never get consensus whether some people love it, or some people hate it. We’re making a big point of it often in marketing, but it’s a lighter touch than I think some people might think. And the optional control scheme is optional, so you can drop back and forth.”
The tricky controls of the Mako have always been a point of contention among some Mass Effect players. While the majority of players consider the vehicle segments to be incredibly frustrating experiences, there are also many that simply embrace the chaos and find enjoyment in navigating the challenging control scheme. Wherever one’s preference falls, allowing room for both options is surely for the best, especially considering some of the more egregious shortcomings of old Mako.
”Playing the Mako today versus playing the Mako back in the original, especially on PC, it’s like night and day,” Meek said. “I don’t want to thrash my keyboard and mouse after every encounter with the thresher maw or trying to climb a mountain. Whether or not you loved how the Mako moved around, I don’t think anyone loved almost making it over that hill, then pressing their jump jets buttons and falling back on their back and just never being able to go up.”
