Display MoreMass Effect Legendary Edition is being built up as the ultimate version of the iconic RPG trilogy, with all the pulse-pounding shootouts, planet-hopping exploration, and alien-bedding romance from the original presented with significant visual, performance, and gameplay overhauls. Not only is the epic fight against the Reapers presented in 4K Ultra resolution, but BioWare has been touting over 40 pieces of DLC planned to return from the original games. However, it appears one notable adventure will not be among them: the Pinnacle Station DLC.
Revealed in a recent interview with Game Informer, game director Mac Walters confirmed Pinnacle Station would sadly be sitting out the new Legendary Edition remaster. Recalling the “emotional roller coaster” of attempting to assemble the combat-centered DLC, Walters revealed the uncomfortable reality that such a task was currently impossible due to original source files, and subsequent backups, being irreparably corrupted. A top-to-bottom remake of Pinnacle would be the only means for the content’s return, a task the team wasn’t at all equipped to commit to.
”It would basically take us another full six months just to do this with most of the team we’ve got,” Walters explained. “I wish we could do it. Honestly, just because this is meant to be everything that the team ever created, brought together again – all the single-player content. And so, leaving it all on the cutting-room floor, it was heartbreaking.”
Pinnacle Station first released back in 2009 as an add-on for the original Mass Effect. Following the meteor-centric Bring Down the Sky, the content marked the second and final DLC for the game, stepping aboard the titular space station and allowing the Commander to test their skills in a series of holographic combat simulators. In addition to exciting firefights, Pinnacle also memorably awarded the player with their very own interstellar apartment, with the remote residence intended to act as a base of operations throughout the remainder of Shepard’s travels.
The absence of Pinnacle Station in Mass Effect Legendary Edition likely won’t come as a surprise to longtime fans, especially for those familiar with the PlayStation 3 version of the game. While players on PC and Xbox 360 have likely had little trouble entering Pinnacle’s challenges, the PS3 version did not feature the content at all, with BioWare citing similar difficulties attributed to the “corrupted” state of source files. Though Pinnacle is regrettably gone for the time being, fans can still encounter references to the top-secret facility embedded in Mass Effect 3.
It’s definitely a bummer knowing only a single DLC is missing from the Legendary Edition remaster, but fans can take solace in knowing literally every other piece of single-player content will be available in the game. This includes all weapon and armor packs (yes, Dragon Age‘s Blood Dragon armor is back), the interactive Genesis comic books, as well as each Collector’s Edition exclusive and pre-order bonus. However, if solace isn’t an option, this news likely comes as a double-whammy following the reveal that multiplayer won’t return for the remaster either.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition releases May 14th for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with next-gen upgrades also confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
