We've got a couple smaller updates for the WC4 Fan Remake today based on questions from fans at the CIC Forums. The first request was to add VR headset support, which the team was surprisingly open to. There are existing tools out there that facilitate conversion to VR, but they are rapidly evolving, so it would be something the team revisits much later on when the mod is closer to release. There were also questions about cockpits, and we got another beautiful shot in reply that shows off their potential. They look like a good mix of classic WC style with information embedded while being rather inobtrusive like in Prophecy. As designed by Origin, WC4 reacted hard to the popularity of invisible HUD cockpit options in Armada, WC3 and Kilrathi Saga. While they may have been the predominant way people were playing in 1995, the game loses a little something by not having them as an option. It's nice

LOAF recently acquired an interesting and well made copy of Wing Commander on VHS. It's not uncommon to see bootlegs with surprisingly sophisticated production values at conventions or some counterfeit markets. The first release of the movie on VHS was priced to rent at a whopping $103.99, so it's no shock that pirated copies popped up here and there. A more budget-conscious $9.99 home version became available in 2001.

Here is a glorious 1999-vintage VHS bootleg of the Wing Commander movie. All the artwork is taken from the long dead official site!

The Colonia Council has announced that four engineers have established bases in the Colonia region, to provide services to independent pilots.

Councillor Giselle Kingspear gave a statement to the media:

"The Council believes it has a duty to support those who contribute so much to the region's stability. That's why we have consulted with engineers in the core systems to identify individuals who could offer similar services here in Colonia. Consequently, we now have four engineers at planetary bases in the region."

"Mel Brandon is based in Luchtaine, and specialises in laser-based armaments, shields, engines and frame shift drives. Etienne Dorn in the Los system, once lead engineer for Kraken Shield Specialists, is an expert on sensors, scanners and high-energy weaponry, among other things. Petra Olmanova is in the Asura system, and works with ship armour, countermeasures and explosive weapons,

Check out this pre-release screenshot from Privateer 2 that AD discovered and compare it to one from the final game. The UI isn't as developed, ship icons are in color, BUY/SELL is named TRANS-ACT... and all of the ships have different names: JACKAL becomes Straith, FLEA becomes Shaman and MANTIS becomes Icarus. MULE and CORSAIR don't match ships in the finished game! Most interesting: your ship isn't pictured but is listed as a "TIGER SHARK." That's not in the final game, but it IS referenced in passing twice in the flavor text. Melissa Banks is said to fly a Tiger Shark named Fatale (she flies a Faldari when you rescue her).

This was part of the CD-ROM Interactive Entertainment previews recently discovered. It's worth comparing side by side here in greater detail, because the differences are so cool!

The WC4 Fan Remake team has a new update that touches on a variety of subjects. To start with, they've announced that the release of their playable demo will likely slide from this summer out to a later date in 2021. There are a few changes coming for it, but overall the main message is that lots of good progress is being made. To drive the point home about how complex this can be, however, the new article also has a detailed discussion about programming math that gives you a glimpse at the effort involved here. They could still use help in the 3D art and programming realms, so contact Pedro and the gang if that sounds like a role for you! Read the entire update at WCRespace here.

In order to minimize the delay one change we’re looking at is replacing the Intrepid model from the demo with the Lexington, which is already complete. The choice to use the Intrepid was always odd anyway as the gameflow

Delta Patrols Update Now that you’ve had a chance to experience the new updated patrol system, we’re bringing three more patrols on-line! We’ve reworked three of the Delta Quadrant patrols and added them to the new UI. As part of this treatment, they also gain the bonus experience, updated rewards, and improved functionality of the system. In addition, we’ve modified the patrols to make sure that they’re fast and straightforward, with the occasional twist to keep you on your toes. New UI treatments and objective markers make them even easier to understand, too. For this round we’ve updated the following: “Tempting Targets” (Kinbar system patrol): The Hierarchy has a trade outpost in orbit over a resource-rich planet in the Kinbar system, and various Delta Quadrant groups come there to trade. Of course, bolstered trade draws in smugglers, pirates, and brigands, with nobody to
