arena15at.jpgWe were just talking about unusual places that the Wing Commander Arena logo was popping up, and here's another one. Collins Cake Creations makes themed cakes in Liverpool, and they've done a number of video game-inspired designs. Their latest is Xbox themed, and it's topped by a Wing Commander Arena cutout. You could nitpick and point out that Arena is a 360 game, that's an Xbox Series X controller and the rest of it are items from the Xbox One, but I love it. Hopefully someone has an awesome 40th birthday!

We have just released another small patch, which mainly prepares the game for its release on physical cartridges, but also fixes the following two issues:

    Bugfixes:
    • Don't offer additional primary weapon slot at tuning stations when having ancient weapon glyph equipped
    • Fixed deadlock when a progress bar success type message was removed from viewport while equipment selection wheel was opened

Note that we don't have a definitive date for the physical release yet, but we'll announce it shortly! Have fun playing!

    After seeing the

    Spanish WC2

    that

    Christian Klein

recently acquired, the next natural question was whether DROSoft had also localized the Special Operations. The answer is yes, and it comes in an awesome double pack just like the Spanish

    Secret Missions

! Both are in the same box with the game summaries translated side-by-side on the rear of the packaging. The contents within are fairly straightforward, but the combination of the two expansions makes this a very cool collector's item.

We have some unexpected news today regarding the Wing Commander Movie. Sebastian Z noticed that the film has been added to the slate of free streaming films on YouTube in the United States. A lot of people might not even be aware that YouTube also hosts full fledged theatrical releases, but up until recently, WC was available as a $4 rental and $10 purchase. It's now showing as free with ads - or just free if you're a YouTube Premium subscriber! Fans outside the US are reporting that it doesn't seem to work there, but let us know if you find other platforms or other places where this also applies.

Today we've got a fun movie poster from the Triple Threat Theater podcast. It celebrates the joint collaborations between Freddie Prinze Jr. and Matthew Lillard. Last year they dedicated an entire episode to the trio of She's All That, Wing Commander and the Scooby Doo movie, which all starred the duo between 1999 and 2002. This artwork was used to promote the episode, and they even did a neat making-of post that looked at the process from concept to finished design. That's always neat to see.

triplethreattheater_bestbudst.jpgAs for the actual episode, you can probably skip it. It clocks in at two hours here with the Wing Commander portion lasting from about the 52 minute mark through about 1:15. They didn't quite understand the context of the 1990s and how big of a blockbuster game Wing Commander was in the years preceding the WC Movie's development. Instead, the streamers rehash the normal legitimate complaints about the

magic_dosbox3t.jpgMark Gabby-Li has recently been perfecting the methods to get Wing Commander games to run on Android devices, and he'd like to share the results with all of you! His DOS emulator of choice is Magic DosBox, which simplifies some of the setup and facilitates the unique controls. Almost all of the setup has been done already thanks to a handful of configuration and keybinding files that Mark has graciously put together. The associated .mgc file goes into the /storage/emulated/0/Games/Wing Commander folder on your device where "Wing Commander" could also be "Wing Commander II" or "Privateer" based on the title. Some screenshots of WC1 in action are provided below, alongside the config files. Have fun!

More copies of the Wing Commander movie came today: first, a German budget DVD (with Titan AE) and a US VHS with Spanish subtitles! The Spanish subbed version of the movie’s box changes the description to be about how Freddie Prinze Jr. and Matthew Lillard are friends in real life. WEIRD!

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone for playing, and congrats to our winner! (We haven't gotten permission to reveal his name yet, so I won't be doing that here. :) ) In case you were curious how this particular one is solved: The spectrograph waveform of this audio file is shaped to look like letters. So if you downloaded the image and ran it through any audio processing software, and switched the waveform to "spectrograph," you would see something like this: Which, of course, was the answer, "Leah Brahms." Thanks to everyone who participated! During today's downtime, we're conducting a new giveaway every single hour, in a different location! This morning has already seen giveaways in progress on our Twitter and our Facebook, but now is the time to step up and win on the official STO blog! It's not going to be easy. We've received a coded message from Starfleet, concerning the personal logs of a
